EXCLUSIVE: Catherine Zeta-Jones has been set to star in Side Effects, the thriller that Steven Soderbergh will direct. She joins Blake Lively, Jude Law and Channing Tatum, who are also negotiating. The Scott Z. Burns scripted film is being financed by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, with production to start in April in New York on a thriller that has a budget in the $30 million range. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing with Greg Jacobs and Burns. Open Road recently signed on to distribute in the U.S.
The film is a potboiler in the Jagged Edge-Basic Instinct mold, and Zeta-Jones will play Dr. Erica Siebert. Lively plays a troubled and depressed woman who is taking serious amounts of prescription drugs, which leads her into a relationship with another doctor (Law). Her intake is ostensibly designed to help her deal with the anxiety surrounding the pending release of her husband (Tatum) from prison. Burns wrote it several years ago and set it up at Miramax under the title The Side Effects, intending to direct it but never getting there because of his busy scripting schedule that included the Soderbergh projects Contagion, The Informant! and Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Zeta-Jones and Soderbergh previously worked together on Traffic and Ocean’s Twelve, and he developed a musical version of Cleopatra for her that probably isn’t going to be part of his retirement tour. Her latest film, the Stephen Frears-directed Lay the Favorite, premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival and a distribution deal is expected shortly. Her upcoming projects include Playing the Field with Gerard Butler, Rock of Ages and Broken City, the latter of which stars Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe and is now shooting. Zeta-Jones is repped by WME.

She’s been back at work full-force for a while now, it’s nice to see.
It is nice that she’s doing more work. It’s not so nice that Soderbergh keeps working with his block of wood, known as Channing Tatum. ick
Mr. Soderbergh – This is the weirdest retirement I’ve ever seen.
I was just thinking the same thing.
CZJ is still “the” brunette in the contemporary Hollywood pantheon.
Totally confused… Is Annapurna in or out? Seems like there’s a lot of chatter on this project, but it doesn’t add up.
Didn’t Soderbergh say he was retiring/taking a sabbatical? Doesn’t look like it.
Retirement for SS is only doing one movie a year instead of three.
The Bitter Pill will be the last film he directs, most likely for good.
Correction: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Steven Soderbergh previously worked together on… «Ocean’s Twelve».
Annapurna didn’t want Blake Lively to star..they don’t feel she’s big enough or bankable enough to really be a lead …I can see why it was a gamble for them…besides a few supporting roles, gossip girl and a makeup contract…I don’t think Blake has ever been the lead in a film . Maybe she should just stay on CW and sell shampoo.
This information is not correct.
Actually yeah it is.
If it is, why isn’t Deadline reporting it?
Why did Annapurna sign on in the first place?
Why would Soderbergh let the deal fall through instead of acquiescing to their wishes?
I find it funny that Megan Ellison, who until PTA let her finance his movie, was known only as an LA party girl with a rich daddy. Now she’s an expert on casting that she can tell an Academy Award winning director who he can and can’t have star in one of his films.
I think Ms. Ellison needs to get over herself.
Megan, if your reading this, they want your money, not your opinions. You’re way out of line here.
Soderbergh let Sasha Grey and Gina Carano be the leads in his films by letting them play to their natural talents. Blake Lively plays a troubled and depressed woman who is taking serious amounts of prescription drugs. I don’t know about her, but a few other actresses come to mind that are naturally talented for this role.
I really think this is fallout from the iPhone nudie pics scandal, that exposed lively as someone who may do anything for a role. Understandable that people are reluctant to encourage a young woman who will do anything to land a role. Not exactly a respectable move, she makes it harder on every other actress in Hollywood. Don’t blame someone for balking.
Lively in the lead, coupled with the rest of the cast including Zeta-Jones, does seem like a stretch for this budget, even with the ensemble, but it probably means Annapurna will end up putting up more equity than they should or the budget will be signficantly less. In any case, if they do fall out, and it goes to Berlin and underperforms, it’ll be a rat’s nest trying to replace the cash and get this made. It doesn’t help that Lay the Favorite was a disaster.
There are multiple offers for financing on the table and they will have a deal by the end of the month.
How many bad movies for soderbergh? Ocean 12-13, contagion, etc… When is his last good film?
Contagion was not a bad movie.
Catherine is the best. I’m glad she is making movies again. But, the absence was the fault of Michael’s nicotine addiction.
