In a last-minute buy, CBS has picked up a comedy spec produced by one of its stars, Mike & Molly leading lady Melissa McCarthy. The untitled comedy was written by McCarthy’s husband, actor-writer Ben Falcone and fellow actor Larry Dorf through Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind Mike & Molly. It centers on David Gell, who learns that there’s no place like home…unless home is your parents’ house and you’re 37 years old. McCarthy will co-executive produce, with Falcone and Dorf serving as supervising producers. The project will
be in contention for this pickup cycle, along with another comedy McCarthy and Falcone have at CBS and WBTV about a woman in her mid-40s who has a spectacular midlife crisis. McCarthy and Falcone, repped by CAA and Christian Donatelli, co-wrote that script together. The project marked McCarthy’s first pilot script sale and was set up at the network shortly before the actress won an Emmy for her role in Mike & Molly in September. Dorf is with Naomi Odenkirk.

With all due respect to both CBS and Melissa – I mean – this trend is really getting bad. I don’t know if it’s part of her deal or if it’s just a really good script but unless she’s been a writer for many years already (I seriously don’t know) than – well – it just seems a bit much. I wish everyone well at all times however this new trend we’re seeing to reward people after reward by buying scripts and doing development deals for one good year — seems a bit much. Course, one of the other networks would probably do it as well so they snapped it up to take it off the market. Of course, these types of deals are not new. What is new is the fact that Ms. McCarthy is just hitting her peak, very quickly and just sold a script. I don’t recall any of the Friends casts selling scripts in their first year on a network. This is a bit new. Again, no ill will LOVE LOVE LOVE her. Wish her all the best, just not sure this is a great trend for the business and it creates one less development slot. WHo knows? It may be brilliant. CBS doesn’t usually mess around with this kind of thing like the other networks do — as much. I’m going out of my way here because I just adore her as an actress.
melissa was a groundling. so yes, she has been writing original material for years. almost every piece she performed on SNL were pieces she wrote and performed at the groundlings. she is just as much a writer as an actress. same with her husband ben.
Please also recognize that Larry Dorf has been a brilliant comedy writer for many years.
Melissa is just brilliant. She has so much to offer.
I loved this show when Chris Elliott starred in it.
The difference with Melissa and the cast of Friends, is that she HAS been writing for years. Her talent has just hit the mainstream, but those of us in Los Angeles who have had the pleasure of watching her write and perform for years know all her success is a long time coming, and quite well deserved.
She’ll not be a writer on this show, just producer, according to another site.
Mel and Ben are the royals of comedy these days. Truly talented and good people.
Yeah, let’s just reward the people who have failed over and over and over for years. Tired of the same old.
Bring on the new.
Congrats to her and open the doors for other new and fresh voices.
Mr. T.V. Man, tear down that wall!
Melissa is beyond gifted and the range of characters she has invented will entertain people for years to come, believe me. I worked with her seven years and you could not find a more talented, prepared and delightful person to be around. As far as her writing goes – I am sure she has stacks of quality material ready to go. This is just the beginning, folks. Bet the ranch on MM and Ben.
Are you sure she is still married, she didn’t have her ring on at the Golden Globes….More women writers & showrunners the better…CBS always knows what they are doing..The world needs more comedy than ever…
I was at the taping of the pilot and I found it very funny.
