UPDATED: CBS got on the board this morning with its first drama pilot orders this season. Greenlighted are Baby Big Shot, a legal drama written by Dana Calvo (TNT’s Franklin & Bash) and executive produced by Kevin Falls, who will serve as showrunner, and Elementary, a modern-day Sherlock Holmes series from writer Rob Doherty.
Baby Big Shot, from Sony TV, Jamie Tarses’ studio-based Fanfare and CBS TV Studios, centers on a working-class woman who uses her street smarts to compete with her more polished colleagues at a tony Manhattan law firm. Falls, Tarses and her Fanfare partner Julia Franz are executive producing, with Calvo serving as co-executive producer. This marks the first network drama pilot for comedy-centric Fanfare, which ventured into the hourlong format with TNT dramedy Franklin & Bash.

Elementary, from CBS TV Studios and studio-based Timberman/ Beverly Prods., is described as a modern take on the cases of the pipe-smoking private eye created by Arthur Conan Doyle, with Sherlock now living in New York City. Veteran Medium writer-producer Doherty wrote the script and is executive producing the project with Sarah Timberman & Carl Beverly. Sherlock Holmes is very much in the zeitgeist right now with Guy Ritchie’s movie franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. and BBC’s hit series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch, which was just renewed for third season.

I love Sherlock Holmes, but man, I have the RDJ movies and the BBC show. Do I need a third? Hell, let’s do an animated series and a comic really saturate the market telling the same stories over and over again but with a new little twist.
Oh, and not to mention all the original stories, lesser Holmes’ movies, and the masterpieces with Basil Rathbone in it.
So true! Seriously, the BBC show is fantastic… Best of luck to anyone trying to make it better. Why on earth would CBS do this? While we’re at it, why don’t we try an American version of Downton Abbey? I’m sure we can do that better, too, right? What is it with us Americans and the “not invented here” syndrome? This is embarrassing, really.
While we’re at it, why don’t we try an American version of Downton Abbey?”
Yeah, because the American version of “Upstairs, Downstairs” (BEACON HILL) worked so well…;)
Exactly. If anything, they should’ve bought the rights to the BBC version so they could re-air it on their network. It would be cheaper and it’s good TV.
oh please don’t, BBC is doing an excellent job and we already have “House” and “The Mentalist” anyways
there is already a modern Sherlock being done. Called Sherlock. On BBC. Starring Benedict Cumberpatch. And it’s wonderful. By the way, CBS has another. Called The Mentalist. How derivative/un-original can Hollywood get?
I know. This “modern” Holmes TV show IS “SHERLOCK” on the BBC. That’s what that show is! And it is great! What is this new show, except a copy of the BBC version.
Funny thing… There was actually a Sherlock pilot several years ago called… Wait for it… ELEMENTARY. And it was also a modern take on the pipe smoking detective’s cases. It was written by Josh Friedman. But totally different, because it was set in San Francisco…
Peter Iliff and Gary Fleder sold a similar concept to ABC several years ago. That one was called “Holmes & Watson” and set in Venice Beach.
hahahaha!
ALSO? Nothing CBS churns out will come close to BBC’s Sherlock.
I know I’m in the minority, but the BBC’s Sherlock isn’t all that great. It does a solid job of appearing far smarter than it is. And there’s an element of pantomime that kills the drama for me. But like I say, I’m in the minority. The paucity of good material on British television does make it one of the best shows of recent times.
Well, at least you know you are in the minority. That’s something.
While I do enjoy the new PBS series, the original & best Sherlock Holmes stories were about a man in the the 1890′s! HIS methods were radical & before his time!
Updating everyone from the books to present day, with all the new forensic procedures we have, almost defeats the purpose of what a wonder Sherlock was.
& the RDJ movie series, while being very entertaining, also destroys the persona by making him an eccentric brawler! Why can’t these writers just invent some NEW characters of their own?
*sigh* Sir Arthur must be spinning in his grave!
i agree, everyone i know is raving about the show but i just don’t get the fuss. I think it’s quite an arrogant show but that may be just the fans that I know, and I just want to be clear thats not all the fans just the ones I know. They find it hard to accept any criticism of the show
I have to agree… the Mentalist already seems like the U.S.’ Sherlock series.
I’ve watched the BBC Sherlock and a couple of episodes of The Mentalist, and while the show formats are different, the main protagonists are pretty similar at their core. Aside from the mental acuity instincts, they both have slightly arrogant, devil-may-care attitudes bordering on sociopathy/complete apathy.
Uh CBS this has been done already … its called Sherlock and is on the BBC. A very good show and I already know is far more superior!!! Sherlock Holmes is BRITISH!!!!
After the critical success of BBC’s Sherlock and the Guy Ritchie/RDJ films, I’m going with Nikki’s “SHOCKER!” line.
Wow!! A modern day take on Sherlock Holmes! I can’t believe nobody’s though of that since series two of Sherlock ended Suday.
Bet it won’t be even remotely close to how good Sherlock on BBC(UK)/Masterpiece(US) is.
Wow! A street smart female lawyer and, in essence, a transplanting of the BBC’s brilliant Sherlock to New York City – only without Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss.
Color me underwhelmed, so far.
I expect it’ll take a miracle to get either to series.
Sherlock Holmes belongs in London end of, it’s basically a character, remove that and you lose Holmes. This will just be another CSI. This is stupid, good thing I don’t watch cbs anyway.
Rob Doherty is one of the nicest and most talented guys in the business. Glad to hear they picked up his pilot. Congrats man!
CBS commissions crime dramas! Breaking News! Film at 11! Well I guess if the formula aint broke!
That said, the Sherlock remake sounds pathetic. My deepest sympathies to the actor who tries to play the role while Robert Downey Jr and especially Benedict Cumberbatch are still active. Oh but Sherlock is in New York now! Please insert eye roll here…
Horrible title. People hear elementary, they think school. Plus, the concept has been done to death. Why not frame the series from Watson’s perspective. He’s much more relatable.
It’s funny because the cannon and every interpretation of Sherlock Holmes are from Watson’s perspective.
I can’t help but think CBS hasn’t really thought through a modern day version of Sherlock Holmes when the execs name the show “Elementary.” Is the character really going to say that?
So, Elementary really has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. Must have been quite a challenge settling on the title, however, what with the other tantalizing options being My, Dear and Watson.
Seriously, another Sherlock Holmes? It’s hard for me to imagine that people who are interested in seeing a modern version of the character wouldn’t rather watch the (almost certainly sure to be better) British version.
It’s CBS. Their viewers haven’t heard of the BBC version. I wouldn’t stake much money that they’ve heard of the BBC.
I won’t be watching. Sherlock outside of his historical milieu is just another damn detective, and I’m sick of detective shows, cop shows, doctor shows, lawyer shows, blahblahblah. But this show will probably do very well for CBS.
The only show I will be watching is the BBC version with the fantastic duo – Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
The idea of a modern Sherlock Holmes has been floating for years! I remember reading Josh Friedman’s crack at modern Sherlock, also called Elementary, that was written back in 2000! So, I’m both happy to see this go to pilot and a bit concerned that this has gone too far into the ringer with rewrite after rewrite. Prove me wrong.
I’ll be honest, neither pilot seems that exciting, I’m hoping the throwback procedurals set in the west/50′s Vegas get picked up to pilot and series over these two. Just sound so… generic.
There is absolutely no point in basing a show on the exact same idea as an already running one (Sherlock). It’ll look faint in comparison, just like all the other series the US tried fruitlessly to adapt from the UK.
The only way I’m watching is if they make Sherlock Mexican and name the show “Homes.”
Don’t give them ideas.
What about setting it in San Fran and calling it Sherlock Homo? (GLAAD won’t be glad, but… they never are.)
Change the character to a female and call it Shirley Holmes.
Oh, the possibilities when unhindered by originality or actual creativity.
Let’s not forget “House,” so CBS is working on something that’s being done better three times over.
CBS ought to be thoroughly ashamed and disgusted with themselves for ripping off BBC’s Sherlock. This is the most horrible idea network television has concocted since Work It.
San Francisco is a much better setting for Sherlock Holmes than New York. I’m sick of everything in New York, but likely shot in Toronto or Vancouver.
I love the BBC series SHERLOCK, but since we only get 3 episodes a year I may check out Elementary… but hopefully they don’t just recycle the same stories again.
Seriously, America? You’re making me embarrassed to be an American. Are you really going to rip off Sherlock, one of the best shows (aside from Doctor Who and Merlin) that the BBC has produced? This is not going to go over well with the Sherlockians….
Amen to that! Won’t be surprised at all if this is a flop for CBS. All it’ll be is a knock-off. I sure won’t be watching it. As far as a contemporary take goes, Cumberbatch and Freeman are it and no one can outdo Moffatt and Gatiss.
This right here is why I don’t watch much TV. No originality. I feel my IQ dropping already.
The Great Wasteland ….
Stop it right now. BBC’s Sherlock is one of the greatest shows made in several years, do NOT try and replicate it. The BBC actors and writers are already doing a fabulous job.
jeez America can’t you come up with your own tv shows????
Trust me. America doesn’t want this either.
