UPDATED: CBS got on the board this morning with its first drama pilot orders this season. Greenlighted are Baby Big Shot, a legal drama written by Dana Calvo (TNT’s Franklin & Bash) and executive produced by Kevin Falls, who will serve as showrunner, and Elementary, a modern-day Sherlock Holmes series from writer Rob Doherty.
Baby Big Shot, from Sony TV, Jamie Tarses’ studio-based Fanfare and CBS TV Studios, centers on a working-class woman who uses her street smarts to compete with her more polished colleagues at a tony Manhattan law firm. Falls, Tarses and her Fanfare partner Julia Franz are executive producing, with Calvo serving as co-executive producer. This marks the first network drama pilot for comedy-centric Fanfare, which ventured into the hourlong format with TNT dramedy Franklin & Bash.

Elementary, from CBS TV Studios and studio-based Timberman/ Beverly Prods., is described as a modern take on the cases of the pipe-smoking private eye created by Arthur Conan Doyle, with Sherlock now living in New York City. Veteran Medium writer-producer Doherty wrote the script and is executive producing the project with Sarah Timberman & Carl Beverly. Sherlock Holmes is very much in the zeitgeist right now with Guy Ritchie’s movie franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. and BBC’s hit series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch, which was just renewed for third season.

Lol nope. Not going to watch this. Ripping off BBC’s version and MOFFTISS. Boy I’m proud to be an American.
Any Sherlock without either Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, or Andrew Scott is not worth watching.
“A modern-day Sherlock Holmes series”. Lol. Gonna fail.
There are some very important things I would like to say about this idea of a modern adaption of Sherlock Holmes. It’s been done. The amazing writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have already conquered this dragon. That idea is done and over with. No one is going to think that you came up with this idea on your own. You’re jumping off of their success and as much as I love Sherlock Holmes and want more people to know of the original Doyle stories this is not the way to do it. Especially since you’ve already ruined it. How? You CANNOT take Holmes out of London. Holmes is synonymous with the city of London. He is as much a part of London as it’s very streets. You can’t take him out of his home ground. It’s just not done. Especially not with a character as beloved, across the world and through several generations, as Sherlock Holmes. Taking Holmes out of London would be like taking Captain America out of the US. Are you understanding this? Holmes IS London. You already made a mistake by trying to redo the idea of Gatiss and Moffat, please…PLEASE…if you want to persist with this idea, don’t you dare take Holmes out of London.
“Sherlock” cannot be outdone. CBS does not need to develop “Elementary”. They just need to watch “Sherlock” and realize their show has a;ready been done. Idiots.
Why oh why, must networks to this. Absolutely ridiculous. Won’t say anything more that the majority of other comments haven’t said. Bad idea…Period.
James McAvoy would seem like a good fit for Sherlock, if he’d ever have to start a TV career. I could see Sean Astin as Watson.
LOL had to get this in but James McAvoy was in Early Doors (BBC Sitcom) AND Shameless UK (you know another TV prog the US tried to do) quite awhile before he was Professor X, just for your edification as wiki is down today and oh what else let me see oh yer DON’T YOU FUBIN DARE DO THIS SHOW CBS! the BBC one is the greatest T.V show i’v seen in a long time but guess what, because Hellywood is poaching Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (Star Trek and The Hobbit respectively) they might not have enough time to do a 4th season (but atleast a 3rd is in the bag)so IF and WHEN that happens an 10 or so years pass then CBS you can have a crack instead of smokin’ it like you must be now if you think this has legs. ok back to the basement.
der! meant cellar not basement, i am a brit after all LOL
This is hilarious. The US has no taste at all. I’ll stick with the BBC’s Sherlock and the greatest actor in the world Benedict Cumberbatch thanks all the same.
It just says “modern day take”. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s “ripping off” SHERLOCK or trying to replicate it. There’s more than one way to do something, especially in a different setting.
However, if they do copy over story lines and characters, that’s a whole different thing. I, however, am not jumping to conclusions. I love all Holmes things and think it’d be interesting to see him in modern day America – though I don’t have high hopes.
I agree with you. There is more than one way to do Sherlock Holmes. There may be some overlap of plot if CBS bases stories on the Conan Doyle stories, but BBC Sherlock has veered far away from its source material. It would be nice to see closer modern adaptations, but I don’t expect it. It would also be nice to see Holmes in a different ethnic group or gender. If not, I’d love to see Jeremy Northam in the part (although he wouldn’t be a young SH, but again, I don’t know what their plans are).
Are you serious?!?! To make a modern Sherlock now when it was made by Brits (and is very successful worldwide)? OMG, Americans please, try to be creative and don’t copy so often what others did already!!! What you do from it looks like a parody of the original very often.
lmfao oh God CBS, just stop while you can. BBC’s Sherlock IS the modern take on it, why don’t you come up with your OWN damn ideas? Nothing you can come up with will ever be half as good as that show. Just stop while you still can.
Can’t wait to see Robert Downey Jr back on the small screen. He was so good in Ally McBeal!
I bet even Arthur Conan Doyle is having nightmares about this new, “original”, show of CBS.
Can somebody call Moriarty and send him to CBS?
While I would never begrudge a fellow scribbler a dollar, I think all involved in this complete rip of the BBC show should be ashamed of themselves. This is a new low.
“Can somebody call Moriarty and send him to CBS?”
Why–so they can do a ghastly ELEMENTARY spinoff for him?
Ah no guys. I meant to send him there to “explain” them not to copy BBC, to explain it his special way. You all know how he works
So apart from the name “Sherlock Holmes” how exactly will it be a new take on Sir Conan Doyles amazing tales? Quite frankly, the best new take of Sherlock is by Benedict Cumberbatch, as the actor can give the English arrogance without the prejudicial disdain air that the character requires with a sophistication that any churned out copycat, jump on a bandwagon, lets put out a failed US pilot because of a successful UK series and get a moneyspinner, could ever conceive to acheive. Its failed before it starts.
If you already must, CBS, why not make a show about MORIARTY? The greatest criminal mind of all time! Why rip off something that’s being produced right now?
What a constructive idea.
Sorry, I won’t be watching it. It just sounds like it’s bound to be a terrible rip off of the incredible BBC Sherlock.
The thing is – there are many Sherlocks – but Benedict Cumberbatch is The Sherlock for this time. For one thing he is a Great actor and as the 2nd season of 3 is now over the praise for it is so high as in many think it’s equal to any great movie out there.
Of course anyone can be Sherlock – a mouse and a muppet have been – but to give the best quality they can to it – it has already been done in this show. It’s also in current times. I don’t think they plan to do the same show for over here, but whatever they do – - Oh, also, “House” is also Sherlock .. the writer said so.

Does this not sound like the very same description that BBC’s Sherlock’s creators and the actors used to describe their series before the first season came out? Heck, take out the CBS TV studios bit and this could easily be word-for-word a description of the BBC series.
Shame on you CBS. For shame. If this series really ends up on air, I will probably just give up completely on any and all CBS produced shows. Very very disgusted and very annoyed.
The ONLY thing that could justify doing another modernization of Holmes in direct competition to SHERLOCK would be if it was so radical and revisionist that it could stand as a GENUINE “new take”.
And I guarantee you, THAT ain’t happening on CBS.
Hollywood has lost all shred of creativity,it is a fact.I doubt they can even come close to the wonderful version of the BBC.
American TV is getting really desparate isnt it? I love the BBC one and quite honestly think American TV should keep away. Im an american and I prefer British shows more because their more original and quite frankly usually better writing and acting. I am not looking forward to this new york based version. I’ll give it a go but quite honestly I think BBC should kick their own asses for even doing this.
ugh cbs, you waste your money.
it’s totally emberassing to produce a sherlock update right now! because this won’t even be a success.
btw: how jealous can people be. better work on your own stuff.

That Kevin Falls is a genius, and everything he works on is touched by God. Great guy, great talent.
“SHERLOCK” was an international sucess. CBS should have seen the fandom explode over it. Viewers all over the world. And the best part? The creators. They gave the fans what they wanted, they communicated with the fans and…oh yeah right. they are BRITISH.
