Not very encouraging news for CBS’ rebranded morning show: In its first week, CBS This Morning, hosted by Gayle King, CHarlie Rose and Erica Hill, averaged 2.7 million viewers, 1.1 million of them in the adults 25-54 demographic. It finished well behind NBC’s Today (5.5 million, 2.4 million) and ABC’s Good Morning America (4.9 million, 2.0 million). What’s more, CBS This Morning was down 10% in total viewers and 13% in 25-54 from the same week last year, which marked the second week of the revamped CBS Early Show with Hill, Chris Wragge and Dave Price as hosts. This was the steepest decline among all broadcast morning programs despite This Morning featuring high-profile guests including Michelle Obama. (In several big markets — including Atlanta, Detroit, Tampa and Orlando – This Morning was even beaten by Fox News’ Fox & Friends in total viewers.) Today was down 6% in total viewers and 10% in 25-54, while GMA was actually up, 3% in total viewers and 10% in 25-54. GMA posted its smallest weekly demo margin with Today in more than two years. GMA co-host George Stephanopoulos also is bringing gains to ABC’s This Week in his return as host. In its second outing on January 15, This Week With George Stephanopoulos drew 2.7 million viewers and 780,000 adults 25-54, up 12%/4% from Stephanopoulos’ 2012 debut and posting the program’s largest audience in 10 months.

Time for an Oprah appearance or two or three.
There is no flow to this new format. I am intrigued about the direction CBS is taking–however, it appears choppy and out of sync. I was happy to lose Chris Wragge. His on screen persona had an air of affectation that was too Hamptonesque. On the flip side, Charlie Rose just is not a Monday thru Friday guy for my tastes. It appears that CBS is trying to corner a market on serious new; still, not every segment has to be so somber.
Why doesn’t CBS just give up. They haven’t had a competitive morning show in decades (ever?) and they never will. They should probably just turn the time over to the affiliates and let them put sitcom reruns on. It would definitely do better ratings wise.
I like the new show…it gives the feel of 60 Minutes, but more crisply produced and lighter.
In quite a few cities, “Today” is not the most-watched TV program between 7 and 9 A.M.
In those cities, the top-rated program during those hours is a local news/infotainment show usually (but not always) on a Fox-owned or affiliated station.
I like the show, and it is the first thing I turn to every morning. I think that Charlie Rose, Gayle King, and Erica Hill are an interesting and exciting cast of reporters. “Go CBS This Morning.”
It’s only going to get worse. This show has nothing going for it. Everyone looks uncomfortable especially that smug Erica Hill
CBS This Morning is worth watching. The three co-host are great. I especially enjoy the hard news element. I’m a big fan of Ms.Hill.Keep up the great work CBS.
I havent’ watch CBS This Morning since they gave Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez and Dave Price the boot. I miss that crew terribly. They felt comfortable in my kitchen every morning. I’ve moved on to ABC Good Morning America. They are starting to grow on me.
