Change in the weather at CBS: At today’s CBS This Morning TCA panel, executive producer Chris Licht talked about why the new morning competitor has eliminated that longtime staple of morning TV: national weather reports. While the show builds four local weather segments into each program, Licht, also VP of news programming, said local audiences identify with their local news personalities. He said the show does not want to introduce a “cliché weather guy.” However, “when weather is news on a national level, we will absolutely cover it,” the executive said, Appearing via satellite with the program’s co-hosts — Charlie Rose, Erica Hill and Gayle King — Licht also fielded questions about why CBS continues to try to compete in the morning talk program arena when the network has found little success against NBC’s behemoth Today and ABC’s Good Morning America. “It is the daypart that has the most upside, the most opportunity to make a lot of money,” Licht said. “To not try would be very foolish.” The question was asked: How much money? “A lot. I mean, not ’60 Minutes’ money, but a lot,” Licht replied.
Said the always-outspoken King: “We’re very well aware that CBS has not been No. 1 since Captain Kangaroo.” She said that in the past the network had made the mistake of trying to clone successful morning programs but now have “four different people” and a different approach. “I believe you keep trying until you get it right,” she said. Rose said that the show would be newsier and perhaps present lengthier segments on important political, scientific and social figures than other morning shows tend to do. However, he added that the show would also have “fun” guests.
Licht also said the show plans to have big-get Oprah Winfrey as a guest. His answer came in response to a question to King, the official Oprah BFF, about how long it would take to get “you know who” on the program. “Number one, I don’t think it’s an obvious question, who is you-know-who?” she cracked. “I’m going to make you say it.” To the question, she replied: “Yes, “We’re not stoopid with two o’s. We will have Oprah on when it makes sense to have her on.”
Both Rose and King said that they would treat any of their powerful friends who appear as aggressively as any other interviewees. Also, they won’t bring their friends on the show unless it makes sense. “The friends are all people anyone would want to have on the show,” King said. “I have a friend Adrian, I guarantee you will not see Adrian on the show.”

I’ve watched this week and have enjoyed the new direction so far.
This has to be the best chance for CBS to gain any traction in the morning show race and it rests primarily on Gayle King’s shoulders. Rose and Hill are good, and to her credit, King is as well, however it will be King’s access to Oprah and Oprah’s eventual appearances that will draw the most viewers and interest to CBS This Morning.
In addition, Oprah’s reach is Gayle’s reach and I’m sure there are some “power names” on Oprah’s call list that will be contacted for CBS exclusives.
CBS knew what they were doing when they pursued Gayle King.
I’d be stupid of I didn’t agree on the above regarding Gayle King. Clearly CBS looked at her Oprah connection as a major plus and all of those contacts that they share together coming possibly to the CBS show. Even at that level, I remind, it’s still difficult to get “friends” on and you want to choose wisely. Gayle is smart enough to know this. She’s working it for guests now but being selective. All that being said I’m not sure it’s a HUGE factor in why she was hired. I mean it is – just not a husge as you made it out to read. She’s a WORKER contrary to how she’s portrayed in tabloid press. She’ll do well.
I hope CBS realizes they have really “messed” up with the latest format and hosts of the Morning Show. Thought Erica, Chris, Jeff Glor and others were much more appealing because of their youthful insight to matters. Charlie Rose needs to be behind the cameras at all costs….absolutely little/no personality. I truly feel sorry for Erica HIll having to deal with all of this. Gayle just needs to remain Oprah’a bff “behind the scenes”! I am a 60+ female and had enjoyed the “Early Show” for many years but now watch NBC or ABC! Your Loss! By the way, Erica……love the new look! The only “good” change!
I’m curious, is anyone watching CBS This Morning? The show is a train wreck. At least the guy who looked like a date rapist is gone. That’s one improvement.
I prefer to watch Robin Meade in the morning. A great way to start the day.
When Gayle King interviewed Michelle Obama, she disclosed that Michelle was a friend. Charlie Rose has done the same concerning guests. My morning show hosts do not have to match my politics, they need only be honest with the viewers. I appreciate their being upfront unlike George Stephanopoulos, who should have said at the Republican Debate that he was a 98% Liberal Democrat who was hosting the debate sice he was the most conserative member of ABC News.
I think the new format is a step in the right direction, and King’s energy is vital to its success. Rose and Hill are very sedate in their delivery, but King’s good at working in a light-humored moment here and there. Hill comes out of her shell and shows more personality when it’s just her and King with a guest, but clams right back up when Rose returns to the table.
The show that aired this morning (Thursday) is a prime example. King and Hill were laughing and having a good time during the segment with Cohen, and they made a few jokes about “The Real Housewives”. Rose came back on at the end, and the women tried to keep that energy going by cracking a joke about him going home to watch an episode of “Housewives”. Instead of Rose laughing it off, he replied with a haughty, “I don’t think so.”
Just because you’re going for the “hard news” angle, it doesn’t mean you have to take yourself so seriously. Rose also slips into interview mode when talking with his co-hosts. Instead of having conversational banter with them about a segment, he fires question after question, like it’s a debrief. I don’t think Rose is the right fit for this. CBS needs a guy who has better chemistry with King and Hill.
You hit the nail on the head on this one. I can’t agree with you more. I have been watching since the change up and until I read your post I was not able to figure out what has been off regarding the chemistry with Rose, Hill and King. You are so right about Rose not being the right fit.
