EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Sheen’s new FX comedy series, Anger Management, is moving to cast its leading ladies. Selma Blair, who had been pursued by the show’s producers, is leading the field of actresses expected to test opposite Sheen at tomorrow’s studio test, which also includes Dexter and No Ordinary Family alumna Julie Benz.
On the Lionsgate TV-produced Anger Management, which has an initial 10-episode order, Sheen will portray Charlie, a former baseball player with anger issues who winds up as an unconventional anger management therapist. There are 3 other leads on the series — all female — Charlie’s own therapist, envisioned as a love interest for him, his ex-wife and his 13-year-old daughter. If their deals close by the time the studio tests start tomorrow, I hear that there are at least three actresses reading for each of the roles. Blair is someone identified early on for the therapist role. Also testing for the part are Jenica Bergere and Elaine Hendrix. Up for the ex-wife role are Benz, Kate Reinders (Work It) and Becker alumna Shawnee Smith. UPDATE: I hear that Nicole Hiltz (In Plain Sight) will also test for the ex-wife part.

Sheen and Anger Management writer-showrunner Bruce Helford talked about casting the female roles at the recent Fox TCA party. “They’re in their late 30s to mid 40s. So it will probably be someone who had experience and that you’ll know,” said Helford, adding, “Everyone in the world calls to say they want to do that show.” Complicating the deal-making for prospective cast members if the nature of the Debmar-Mercury model employed for the show, where hitting a ratings target with the first 10 episodes will trigger a 90-episode order by FX, which would be produced on an accelerated schedule over 2 years. That represents a big commitment for any actresses who likely won’t be able to take on any side projects for the next 2 years if Anger Management goes the distance. Also, because of the project’s series’ tight schedule, no scripts have been completed yet, something that is expected to be done shortly. At TCA on Sunday, FX president John Landgraf admitted that doing Anger Management was risky but said Sheen deserves another shot. “I believe in redemption,” Landgraf said.

Looking for: female lead, late 30s-mid 40s, in need of more drama in their professional lives.
Why not check out Jennifer Taylor? Ms Blair is a GREAT actress too. It would be great to put Anger Management opposite 2.5 Men.
another show with all white women
kind of fascinating how tv still cant figure out that more than half of the viewers aren’t caucasian…
almost as good as the NAACP nominating white actresses instead of qualified black women. Or NBC taking the Jew out of Friday night dinner…yes Nikki Im off topic
How’s your pilot spec with the all black women coming along? Oh, you’re too busy complaining to actually DO anything about it.
More than 1/2 aren’t caucasian? Where did you stumble upon this? It couldn’t be farther from accurate.
Playing the racist card in a political correct manner.
Always astonished over the new variations of the word “fake”.
I’m getting tired of all the people who complain when a show doesn’t feature African American actors.
How about focusing on the shows THAT DO!
hmm
thats a tough one
and yes worldwide there are more than half non caucasian viewers
and i am doing something about it as i represent actors and get infuriated when like this project the stock answer is not seeing black women no matter how qualified they are
so yes i think i have every right to complain
and i am not black
I think we should let the peope who own the show choose who they want to hire. As is their right.
What are you talking about? The casting of David Koechner in Friday Night Dinner? The British show Friday Night Dinner only features one Jewish actor, and in one of the smaller roles at that. Most Jewish characters aren’t played by Jewish actors, and most Jewish actors don’t play Jewish characters.
questions… how does this work? shooting 45 a year? really? would they broadcast 45 a year? or spread it out? is there an option for more after the 100? would they continue that pace? or make the standard 24 or so per year?
Selma Blair is a good idea, she can act, Julie Benz…i am not so sure she has the acting shops for comedy..the other ladies i don’t know them so we will see..but Selma Blair why not if she has chemistry with Charlie, it could be great.
p.s: rfk you are stupid, Charlie never had any problems with his costars in all his 30 years career except once with Chuck Lorre, who is known as a major controlling asshole.
Selma Blair cannot induce laughter, we know this.
And i agree smartman, a black actress would be also a great choice but she has to be talented and have strong comedic skills (and i would say the same thing if it was a white actress, obviously)
JULIE BENZ-YES!!!! She is so funny, she definitely has the comedic chops. Loved her on Desperate Housewives, she was hilarious. Julie would be perfect for this, I really hope she gets it!!
i gotta dream of seeing Kristen Bell opposite Charlie on anything. she is his match. Others i’d love to see opposite Charlie would be Gabrielle Anwar, or Meg Ryan. smart women with a funny bone and panache. and then there’s (oh boy…) Kristsen Wiig, or Kate Hudson. ? Then again, an additional male cast member of Chris Rock or Roseanne would be outstanding – rock my world! Here’s your opportunity to get out of the box and we’re off and running…. ty.
Gosh,
While we’re talking about the lack of black actresses being considered for this show, I would sure like to see Viola Davis in the role as the therapist. I know she’s doing movies but I kind think of her when I think of the therapist role-sexy, strong, and can keep Charlie in his place and at bay. She looked gorgeous at the Golden Globes.
Look an Academy Award nominated actress such as Viola should not be doing some Debmar-Mercury assembly line style sitcom. That would be utterly ridiculous. If she’s gonna do a show, this is not going to be it. She should have tons of offers for features but if not, her team can do better than shooting 35-40 episodes in one year, Tyler Perry style.
Okay, realistically, I know she would not be doing anything like “Anger Management”, but I was just saying I’d sure like tosee her in the therapist role. Of course she’s not going to do something like this as her acting career is peaking. But…how about Aisha Tyler? She had a short arc on “Friends” and surely Chuck Lorre wouldn’t mind her doing that show plus “The Talk”. Besides, who knows how long that show will be around.
The perfect casting would be Demi Moore!
What a stupid idea!
We were just talking about Selma Blair as casting in a meeting yesterday.
%$#&@!!!!
Hello. Denise Richards?
Yes, perfect. Denise Richards for the ex-wife!
Not funny people, Denise Richards is not in Charlie’s league at all in terms of talent so forget it asap, please.
This is risky, but I’m cautiously saying this because I love FOX and I want this show to exceed expectations…under promise and over deliver…..
Sitcom would not be my first choice to do, but for FOX and Charlie, I might consider the role of the therapist, it would work perfectly well, I don’t know now as a therapist I would get involved romantically with my patience, it’s unethical and I can lose my license, he can have a crush oh his beautiful, intelligent therapist is a different story…..
For the ex wife role, it should be ” Debra Messing ” from ” Will and Grace “….she’s cute, has a clean image for Charlie ( in which he’s often paired with dingbats ), it would be a nice change in casting for Charlie, plus Debra Messing has already done comedy, she had her own show, and the audience like her demeanor and personality, she’s likable…..I think they should have an adopted daughter either Asian or Black to make things more interesting….make the show about ” all humanity ” , after all doesn’t everyone in every race have issues that can use a therapist? Charlie should also have patience in different race to make it more ” real life “……
None of the actresses above have any appeal….Charlie is sharp , and witty, he needs actresses who can hold their own with him….Debra Messing is his ex wife, and I might be his therapist! With this it will be a hit, all three strong contenders, mature, classy, intelligent, clean cut, will be a nice change for the TV audience….only because this is on FOX, so I’m taking good care of it:) As a therapist, I might have a ” turtle pet ” in my office to spice things up a bit….just love those turtles

only in Hollywood can you find woman vying for a job to work with someone who has abused their own. anyone with a conscience should boycott this freak show
Selma Blair is terrible. TERRIBLE!
If you ever watched Kath and Kim, you would know she is a black hole of comedy. Wretched.
the writing was TERRIBLE, not her, have you ever seen Todd Solontz movies ? She can act and be funny with good writing.
Selma is not funny. And the dark subtle humor of Todd’s movies is not the same type of humor used in a television comedy. She was horrible in The Sweetest Thing, Kath & Kim, Legally Blonde, Friends – the woman is not funny. She’s beautiful and a fine actress in dramatic roles but she can’t do comedy.
Charlie Sheen is good.
No matter what political correct knuckleheads aka hypocrites say.
He should have never fired from his old show.
Do we want entertainers or choir boys? Choir boys never have been witty nor entertaining.
I wish Charlie good luck for his show. And I wish the political correct knuckleheads to finally get it into their beancounter unit they have for a brain that a creative cannot stay creative by watching his every word. There are enough bad artists out there who self-censor themselves.
I want fresh energy, and Charlie has it.
Congrats to the courageous people who stand up to the hypocrites and give him a show. I’m sure it will be great (as long as Charlie didn’t really mean that he wants to become a better person. Better, in the sense of his critic, always means “boring” and “not funny”).
Not Julie Benz please…. As for the racism calls most white males , date and marry white females, it is not racism it is reality
and not an ethnic therapist?
and doesnt have to be black
there are other races out there
abc and nbc manage to have racially diverse casts
cbs tries on their dramas
Good luck to FX producers when Sheen will stop showing up to work. Or when he will show high and drunk.
So an actress in her 30s or 40s wouldn’t want to do a show with a potential 100 episodes because she couldn’t do features for 2 years? That seems insane to me. The payday would dwarf what she would make in features, not to mention elevating her profile to 100x that of 99% of feature actresses. Not to mention you stay home and go to work everyday like a normal job. If you’re a 40 year old actress, I think you’d sell your firstborn to get on this show.
Whats Marisa Tomei up to these days lol
I’m blinded by the whiteness of these choices.
Why isn’t RENA SOFER testing? She’d be great for either role ! She is great!
There is more than one way to have a “diverse” cast – what about Ana Ortiz?
I find it amusing when people think that if they stick someone with a Spanish surname in a cast, that makes it “diverse” But I get the politics of it. You see Spanish women can be with anyone because they PASS FOR WHITE!
This might have been a hit, but personally Smith ruins it for me.
