UPDATED: Walden Schmidt is dropping the beard and getting a haircut. That was one of the headlines from TCA’s Two And A Half Men session this morning, which featured star Ashton Kutcher with a new clean-cut look. The onscreen transformation will happen on the show’s upcoming episode Monday.
During the panel, co-creator Chuck Lorre talked about how close he came to ending Two And A Half Men after the controversial exit of original star Charlie Sheen. “We absolutely considered it,” he said. “We never imagined we would be in a position to consider it any other way. It looked as slightly impossible and ridiculous thing to do.” Eventually, he and co-creator Lee Aronsohn opened up to the possibility of continuing the show with another star. “We thought if we fail, no one will be psychically harmed. It seemed like such a heartbreaking way to end (the show).”
Kutcher, whose deal is up at the end of the season, was asked about the prospect of him continuing on the show next fall. “The deal we structured was kinda a test deal,” he said. “The show is outperforming the numbers from before I was here, and I think people are responding to it. For me having a show people like and want more of will dictate my decision. Right now I’m looking at (summer) as a hiatus, I have a lot of fun and would love to come back.”
Also at the panel, Aronsohn addressed speculation about the behind-the-scenes fight between Lorre and Sheen, which was fueled by comments during the actor’s rampage last spring. “I never saw it, that was never the case,” Aronsohn said. “Chuck has always been extremely respectful of Charlie, and Charlie has been respectful of Chuck. What has been built up as a feud never existed.”
Lorre kept with the congenial tone when asked about Sheen. “I wish him well, I’m glad he’s sober and happy now,” he said.
Lorre opened the panel on a humble note. “I’m very grateful to be here, you’re going to hear that a lot. There is a great reason to be grateful to be here. It was an extraordinary experience rebirthing the show. We have an audience that has stayed with us and grown and there are ratings stats that are fairly remarkable. For Lee and I this has been an extraordinary experience, it’s been exciting, challenging, terrifying, and at the end of the day we’ve had a lot of fun. We are very grateful this guy [points to Kutcher] came and kept the lights on.” Lorre was a little more blunt and unapologetic after the session. Asked about the lowbrow humor on the show, he said, “If people don’t like the show, I’m sorry.”
As for Schmidt’s appearance transformation, when Lorre first met him, Kutcher was “kind of shaggy and hirsute,” and, since there were no leading men like that on TV, Lorre and Aronsohn decided to keep the look. But the plan was always for Schmidt to shave and cut his hair.

It was weird at the beginning without Charlie Sheen, but life moves on and Ashton is doing his best
Funny how Baha didn’t say the show was any good. Asthon “doing his best” sounds like Baha (and many others) feel the show has lost it.
Can you tell me next about how water is wet? What about that phenomenon of the sun going down, creating darkness?
Everyone in the world knows that Charlie was anything but respectful to Chuck so why are we now pretending that he was? whats the point? we are not morons who are not capable to remember the RECENT past…..also truly fascinating about Ashton´s makeover because we have never seen him shaved…….super brave to have him with a beard, revolutionary tv right there.
let me guess – you work on 2.5 men or are related to someone who does….
Not so ‘Sure’ at all..actually it was Lorre who was rude most of the time not the other way around but of course Aronsohn will tell what suits him..’extremely respectful’ sure…
Anyway time to move on, this show is not funny anymore but if some, even many people watch they watch, whatever c’est la vie.
Will the plan be to make him funny, too? That’d be a good plan!
“Chuck has always been extremely respectful of Charlie, and Charlie has been respectful of Chuck. What has been built up as a feud never existed.”
*ROTFLMAO* this is why people in Hollywood don’t go to Church. They would explode in a ball of fire, or get hit by lightning for all of their lying.
If you saw the first episode of this (fall 2011) season, you saw “Chuck” acting like an ass. Instead of writing a show that would benefit the show, he engaged in a childish temper-tantrum. That’s not respect. it also sounds like the show is over.
Sounds like “Chuck” has figured out his behavior was not the best.
I started to lose interest, but it has been getting better so I’m hanging in there. I am thrilled to hear/see the haircut! I know it’s petty, but it was seriously annoying!
This show was only moderately amusing with Sheen and it is nearly unwatchable now. A Situation Comedy should be about a clearly defined situation, not a murky hodgepodge. A show about nothing has been done already. I guess people will watch just about anything.
Am I the only one in the world who likes hair?
I was stunned when “Two And A half Men” would continue.
I fully expected the plug to be pulled after last season.
I have watched every episode of this season and Ashton Kutcher is very good and fills a need. On the other hand, Jon Cryer’s “Allen” has been turned into a cartoonish buffoon, whose back story really doesn’t warrant this kind of treatment. Angus T. Jones is now just an extra with so few lines and appearances, it would be better if he was just gone. Sorry, young man, but a cute kid you ain’t any more.
Maybe fresh writing and story input would help. The team in place now seems to be tapped out.
What ‘need’ ?
Look, anything put in that hour and time is going to kill in ratings. In fact, it was Sheen who continually credited Everybody Loves Raymond for “Men’s” ratings success as after Raymond left, Men got that time slot, so if I were Kutcher, I wouldn’t be tooting my own horn there too much. The show isn’t funny this season. Kutcher and Cryer have no chemistry, and the slightly nerdy but charming Alan Harper is a character unrecognizable now sadly. As far as Sheen/Lorre’s “feud” Of courses there was. Sheen fell off the wagon, broke down mentally and raged, Lorre publicly used his show’s Vanity cards to tell millions that if Sheen outlived him, he would be be p*ssed and that he had held is tongue while he was attacked and now feels he will write a tell all. We all saw Lorre’s anger. Those Vanity cards were frozen and put ALL OVER online. I’m glad Sheen is sober and that perhaps Lorre has gotten off his angry high-horse, but it bugs that they sit on stage and openly lie to the press and fans over what went down there.
Please let this story die. Enough.
Die. Maybe Kutcher is coming back as a clean shaven, network suit who is successful on his second suicide attempt. Now I would tune in for that. I love the “We Are Family,” “Kumbaya My Lord’” as they hear the beep, beep, beep of the Brinks truck backing up.
I am truly a big fan of the Charlie Sheen/Jon Cryer Two and a half Men chemistry. I was very sorry to hear about Charlie Sheen’s leaving the show, yet almost every night on Las Vegas, NV cable(TBS & MTV) one is still able to she “the” show. Ashton Kutcher’s appearance as a “Charlie” replacement, I’ve only seen him twice. Both of the times that Kutcher was seen by me was very well done as far as half hour situation comedies are concerned. I, for one, will be very dissappointed if two and a half men, dissapears. With all due respect to Ashton Kutcher, Charlie Sheen is the one that will be missed.
Respectfully,
Alan Sheppard
There is no male star around these days better looking than Ashton Kutcher! I think a lot of women tune in to 2 1/2 Men just to look at him! The hair cut and clean up makes him even better to look at. Wise decision Chuck Lorre.
nobody likes changes, and Sheen was cool, but if he was only cool because of the drinking and so on, then I don’t think he was really good at his acting. I think Sheen is a good actor, but I guess he somehow had enough. Otherwise he would not have started with drinking etc
I think any artist who lives of his art only with drugs etc, is no good artist. Moreover Kutcher is not the only good looking actor in the world, look at Alain Delon, George Clooney or so many others handsome studs…lol.
Two and Half men,
I understand that charlie wanted off the show, and yet everyone wants to keep it going. But it is time to let it go, without charlie the show is not worth watching. I would rather watch the older shows then the new ones. I am tired of hearing about the fighting with Mr Sheen and network. All things come to end. So just let it go and let everyone move on.
