EXCLUSIVE: As part of new CW president Mark Pedowitz’s promise to keep the network’s lights on during the summer, the CW is nearing a deal to acquire upcoming Canadian soap The L.A. Complex. The network is in final negotiations to buy the 6 already produced episodes of the series, which premieres on specialty channel MuchMusic next week and will later air on sibling broadcaster CTV. It may also pick up 7 more for a 13-episode run. Created by Canadian writer-producer Martin Gero, L.A. Complex has drawn comparisons to the long-running Canadian teen soap Degrassi, which is produced by the same company, Epitome Pictures. In the vein of Melrose Place, which the CW remade a couple of years ago, L.A. Complex revolves around twenty-somethings living in the same LA apartment complex as they try to make it in Tinseltown. The series features an international cast: Jonathan Patrick Moore (Neighbours) as Connor, a breakout Australian with a dark past; Cassie Steele (Degrassi) as Abby, a Toronto girl ready to fight to get to the top in Hollywood; Joe Dinicol (Life With Derek) as Nick, a nice-guy comedian; Chelan Simmons (Kyle XY) as Alicia, a dancer who will do whatever it takes to make ends meet; and Benjamin Charles Watson (Soul) as Tariq, a talented hip-hop artist from Montreal working as an intern. This is the second time the CW has acquired Canadian scripted series for summer. In 2010, it picked up comedy 18 To Life, which was pulled after 3 episodes. But that show aired with little promotion in a sea of reruns, while L.A. Complex is expected to be a key piece of a full-fledged summer original slate. Gero spent 5 years working on several Stargate series, which were produced in Canada: Stargate Atlantis, on which he rose to showrunner, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Universe. He spent most of the last 2 years in the U.S. working on the HBO comedy series Bored To Death. Gero’s feature debut, the 2007 Young People Fucking, which he wrote and directed, became one of the highest-grossing English-Language Canadian movies ever. Here is a promo for L.A. Complex, whose U.S. sale was brokered by WME:

Interesting move by The CW. I just hope they promote the show.
YEAH!!!!!!
There will be life in the summer for The CW. Add a couple more hour long series and The CW is set for the summer.
sounds very fresh, thought-provoking and original.
so excited to see Cassie STEELE BACK ON TV.
She was the only who stood out from the old Degrassi Cast
After their disastrous Summer last year (they were all reruns from May 26th until September), The CW needs to do something.
Were the CW to go all-reruns again from May 24th (the day after the May sweeps end) until September this year, they might have a vary hard time luring back their viewers.
I wonder if the CW will go after other non-acquired Canadian series like “Bomb Girls” (It comes across as the period show CW could make work), “Republic of Doyle” (though it’s not very CWy, it does have Russell Crowe guest starring in next week’s season opener), “Arctic Air” (Soapy drama set in the Yukon), and “King” (female lead procedural, which seems to be a want for CW this pilot season).
This is good for both the CW and Canadian Television. I hope more deals like this start happening because well Canadian television isn’t always on par with American or British television, it is starting to gain some traction. Should be an interesting venture for the CW.
I miss Melrose Place (CW).
I was waiting for a U.S broadcast network to pick up this show but I never thought it would be my favorite network, The CW, especially with the way things went with MELROSE PLACE. I’m thrilled by this news and can’t wait to see MP 3.0 on my tv screen again!
glad to see shenae nina and cassie on the same channel!!
And also exactly like Melrose Place
Talk about “paid endorsements”…all of the above is crap. Who are you people that you think we can’t see thru your comments and your personal agenda and that you’re envolved in someway with this show??? wake up…it hurts your project….a project that has absolutely nothing creative about it anyway…Pedowitz should be embarassed if this is the best he can do.
i’m sorry… have you even SEEN the show? with as much hating as you do, why can’t there be the same amount of positive anticipation and excitement for the show?
This doesn’t sound good at all. Didn’t Melrose Place and 90210 kind of bomb on The CW? Why are they going for the same type of series as Degrassi? That show has some of the worst acting I have ever seen.
Because it is a CHEAP pickup, with episodes already in the can. The CW doesn’t expect it to be a success, just keep the lights on during the summer. If it gets the same poor ratings as the typical rerun, it will still be a win, since it keeps the network from going dark all summer. The CW needs plentiful CHEAP but NEW material to ride out this summer with. They know all of these shows will fail by Fall, but that isn’t the point. They need to keep the blood flowing through the system, even if it is weak diseased blood, because stopping the heart all summer will kill them.
dang… hahahahahaha. i mean, it’s true, but LA Complex is surprisingly edgy
90210 in currently in its 4th season on The CW. If this is your definition of a “bomb” I can name about 50 showrunners who would love to bomb like that. And Degrassi is in its 11th season. Why wouldn’t The CW want to be in business with company that produces that show?
a show about young people trying to make their Hollywood dreams come true? What an original idea. True visionaries.
Oh yes, by all means go to Canada to buy a project about Los Angeles that’s a rip-off of Melrose Place. WTF?! And I’m with you, Esther… Talk about a bunch of planted comments. Ugh.
Apparently you’re too paranoid to grasp that it might be good? I watched it, it was funny and very well done, especially for a Canadian show. Then writer/director/producer does Bored to Death, which is hilarious.
Another poster made a comment about ‘Melrose Place’ and ‘Beverly Hills 90210′ not doing so well on The CW.Teah, CW is trying to get the young market,….who isn’t,….but the difference with LA COMPLEX (love the play on words?)or do you not get it? Sooo many people just go for the ‘retty factor’ for progrqamming,….with NO sunstance or story value. With LA COMPLEX,…they came in with, not just looks, but talent as well,….and a couple of bitch azz stories,….well done Canada,…your writers got it right,….sorry for the pun.Doesn’t hurt at all that LA COMPLEX hs Jewel Staite on board,…..my goodness, who doesn’t remember and lve Katlee. The brother on the ‘down low’ is really overacting;alittle more remorse and less butch’Tariq,….this actor is wonderful, subdued and talented. Can’t wait to see the stories unfold. A great deal of promise, keep the wriing tight, concise and interesting. The main chararcters are not fully developed, and that’s okay,…keeps them interesting and wanna watch more’ Kaldrick King’,….calm down and concentrate on remorse…….love me some “LA COMPLEX”
SORRY,….forgot something,……who is the ‘house’ band’ we are always seeing riffing and singing st the apartment complex? Like their music,….BUT, who are they?
