EXCLUSIVE: Actor-comedian David Koechner has signed a talent holding deal with NBC. Under the pact, he is attached to star in Greg Daniels’ comedy project Friday Night Dinner and possibly do more episodes of The Office, where he has appeared occasionally since the second season. The deal expands Koechner’s relationship with The Office showrunner Daniels.
Like The Office, Friday Night Dinner also is based on a UK series. The original, created by Robert Popper and airing on Channel 4, is about a traditional but not strictly observant Jewish family and chronicles their Shabbat dinners. It centers on brothers Adam and Jonny who reluctantly visit their parents — mom Jackie, who is obsessed with Masterchef, and dad Martin, who loves to walk around shirtless — for a home-cooked meal. Adding to the gallery of oddball characters is a grandmother who struts her stuff in a bikini and eccentric neighbor Jim who constantly interrupts dinner. Daniels originally explored a role as supervisor/executive producer on the project and met with a number of writers but ultimately decided to write the adaptation himself. While he was still writing the script, NBC put the project on a fast track, getting a casting director to explore casting choices and looking at directors. (Ken Kwapis, who helmed the pilot of The Office, has circled the potential pilot.)
As for The Office, it was unclear whether, with Michael Scott gone from Dunder Mifflin, his obnoxious BFF Todd Packer, played by Koechner, would return. I hear that now is a strong possibility, especially in case Friday Night Dinner doesn’t go the distance. ImprovOlympic and Second City alum Koechner, repped by CAA, started off as a performer on Saturday Night Live and Late Night With Conan O’Brien before segueing into TV and film acting.

America might finally be ready for the power of Dave Koechner.
I know I am.
Love David. Easily one of the most underrated actors.
Extremely talented and funny, GREAT call NBC!
A great show from the UK that the idiots at NBC will be sure to screw up. Between this and Misfits they will desecrate my favorite shows.
Keck passed on pye.
I look forward to anything Koechner does, but I’m still waiting for his big dramatic turn that blows us all away. We know he has it in him.
Koechner = genius. Loved him in Naked Trucker & T-Bones. SEEK IT OUT.
I’ve always thought David Koechner has the potential of a Paul Giamatti type career, he just needed some clout to get roles to prove it. Hopefully this new show will open up those doors for him.
Knowing David and his family, very happy for him. He so deserves this.
Koechner is funny at times, but he plays the absolute same character in every role he takes. I see no depth – he’s little more than a chubby version of Steve Carell.
been laughing at dk since the early 90es and look forward to this progression . he belongs at the table with the the best of his era and will make a bill murray like transition . he’s the goods and i’ve known it for a long time . no surprise that nbc is buying koechner .
He’s a friend of a friend, so I’ve watched his career with interest. I’ve always felt he got a raw deal at SNL (relegated to background rolls, rocky period for the show, only on for one season, etc.) and I was worried that would be the death of his career. I’m glad to see things continue to move upward for him. I do agree with Yelnick that up until now is has pretty much always played the same character, but hopefully this new deal with allow him to expand a bit more and show us what he can do.
