Discovery CFO Bradley Singer couldn’t have been surprised to be asked at Citigroup’s Global Media, Entertainment and Telecommunications Conference about what’s up with OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. Bankers and investors are still waiting to see significant progress at Discovery’s struggling, high-profile joint venture with the talk show host and entrepreneur. But his answer was also familiar: Wait. Now that Oprah’s running the operation “we feel real good about the direction the network is headed in. It’s just building block after building block.” The channel’s financial prospects, he added, depend on how well it can build its viewing audience.
Most of the other questions were a lot easier considering that Discovery has one of the highest profit margins in cable programming. Singer says the ad market continues to improve. “We have not been impacted yet by anything you might read” about weakness in the overall economy. Meanwhile channels that have taken off over the last year, led by ID: Investigation Discovery, have “that much room to grow in terms of advertising.” He’s also optimistic about The Hub, the joint venture with Hasbro. “Long term, that could be a successful network.” Discovery is still assessing TV Everywhere — pay TV providers’ efforts to offer channels to mobile devices. ”There’s still some complexity,” including questions about how mobile viewing will be measured, he says. “The deals that appear to have been done — and none of them are public — wrap the economics into an overall deal” by operators to carry channels on conventional TV. Singer left open the possibility that Discovery will spend more of its cash on a new or existing venture. “The goal of the company is to create value,” not necessarily to increase profit margins, he said. “You generally don’t want to do things (that depress) returns. But sometimes you have to.”

If Hasbro really does only make money with the Hub though toy sales, how does Discovery?
Is patience two quarters or two more years? It’s one thing to be out of pocket $250 million, it’s another being in the hole for half a billion. Seems like if Ms. Winfrey’s new show does well and ripples throughout the schedule, you could see all around better numbers or improved direction by April. Let’s hope this is the case.
In fact, why doesn’t Ms. Winfrey just consider doing her daily show on OWN Monday through Friday. It worked in broadcast, and could make a measurable impact in cable even if it is only reaching a small fraction (1/6th) of her syndicated show.
If on the other hand, those numbers are not turning the network’s fortunes around, it might be better to own-up…even if Oprah and David’s Zaslav’s personal credibilities are a stake.
I hope Oprah comes through for Discovery. Otherwise, I don’t know what shape OWN will be in.
“The channel’s financial prospects, he added, depend on how well it can build its viewing audience.” it’s insights like this that make television what it is today.
How about Oprah doing what is right and start sinking her own money into her own network that has her name on it, instead of mooching money from Discovery. Discovery brass aka those fools in charge of siphoning more dough into this failure of a network, need to cut the chord from the money machine and have her do something financial-wise. Then maybe it could have some legs but enough is enough…get the ratings up by summertime or pull the plug on this trainwreck.
No no no I will not watch I WILL NoT help a billionare make another billion just cuz she wants to enough is enough
Well, first of all OWN is not a basic tier channel in my world of Timewarner Cable. I would not pay extra for it, it is a terrible mashup of repeats, more repeats snd very occasional new programming. In a one day period last week, you had 3 Dr. Phil repeats repeated 3 times. Oprah’s Steven Tyler interview, also a repeat and of coyrse Rosie. Who is not beloved by this viewer. They seem to own a very limited number of movies that are run over and over to fill time. There seems to be no real schedule.. The programming is just awful.
Discovery hopes to make money off an eventual IPO of the OWN company. Don’t think they aren’t in this early for a reason… they didn’t let the public come in like Martha Stewart did.. anybody who says they will NOT help a billionaire must be crying over spilled milk cause they can’t leach off that billionaires ideas..
Ever see how many of these stations have PAID PROGRAMMING ads from 12 midnight to 8AM daily .. Thats what is paying for all this ADVERTISING and Infomercials. Anybody who can’t see how discovery is getting their $$$ must be blind. or no watching.. Infomercials now spreading to local TV too during Sunday Mornings and nights after 11PM. Don’t work a evening or swing shift when you are off there is Nothing on TV to watch even if you have cable or Satellite.. ugggh… makes me glad they invented NETFLIX and streaming video..
