Rob Marshall has been tapped to direct Into The Woods, a film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical, Disney announced today. Marshall is producing with John DeLuca via their LUCAMAR Prods banner, which has has a new multi-year producing deal at the studio. James Lapine, who wrote the stage musical with Sondheim, is writing the script. Marshall directed Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides for Disney,
with the film earning more than $1 billion worldwide and becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film of all time. His wheelhouse is musical features, though, having helmed the 2003 Best Picture Oscar winner Chicago and 2009′s Nine, the latter also a LUCAMAR production. Into The Woods won a slew of Tony Awards for its original 1988 run as well as a 2002 revival. It revolves around a baker and his wife who must reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child, with their journey weaved among the fairytale stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel.

I have dreamt of this movie for years. They better get it right!
Amen, JJ. My thoughts exactly!
Happy dancing now…
Finally. Finally. Finally. I’m very excited for this.
They better get their casting right,,,no POP stars PLEASE
I loved this musical! I can’t wait!
Right person. Great idea. The perfect combination of the potential of special effects in the service of ideas. Still wanna see the Johnny Depp “Thin Man” though.
ItW is almost all sung-through. How is Rob Marshall going to make it so all the songs are in someone’s head? I hate that he gets hired to direct musicals when he obviously doesn’t buy into the conceit.
It’s not sung-through at all. Have you ever actually seen it?
… given the recent Hollywood track record with musicals, all I can say is that I really hope they don’t screw this one up. :\
Very excited about this! They should cast Vanessa Williams as the witch. But knowing Rob Marshall he will probably cast Catherine Zeta Jones which still would not be a bad casting call but Vanessa would be incredible.
Got to have Kristin Chenoweth as the Baker’s Wife.
Perfect choice for a director….now can we just book him now to do “Wicked”?
Let’s hope they can get this into production before Taylor Swift’s Les Miserables shuts down the movie musical genre for another 30 years…
The way is clear,
The light is good,
I have no fear,
Nor no one should.
I sure hope Marshall doesn’t butcher and destroy this great musical the way he did with “Nine”.
“Nine” wasn’t a very good musical to begin with!
I still occasionally wonder what the final result would have been like if the Penny Marshall-directed version with Billy Crystal, Susan Sarandon, and Meg Ryan ever got completed.
Wow, that sounds like it would have been amazing. Wish that could’ve happened.
This is great, now he can concentrate on this one and have someone else helm Pirates 5 please.
The big question is: who will play the witch?
Reese Witherspoon!
Do you think Reese Witherspoon should be the witch or Michelle Pfiffer?
“Follies” seems more appropriate for Marshall, but I’ll take it.
Baker – ROBERT DOWNEY, JR. all the way!
Baker’s Wife – KATE WINSLET would be glorious!
Witch – CATHERINE ZETA-JONES seems an obvious choice, but who else? UMA THURMAN? MICHELLE PFEIFFER?
Cinderella – SCARLETT JOHANSSON, CAREY MULLIGAN, or KEIRA KNIGHTLEY would all work.
Jack and Red Riding Hood – Just go with talented unknown kids. It worked for Hairspray.
Wolf – CHRISTIAN BALE would be a hoot! Not that he would ever do it.
The Princes – #1 is James Marsden, but he played this role already in Enchanted, so PATRICK WILSON and ZACHARY LEVI
Mysterious Old Man – ROBIN WILLIAMS or BILLY CRYSTAL
Jack’s Mother – JENNIFER SAUNDERS
I’m sorry, Patrick, but I’d much prefer people who could actually *sing* the parts as well as act them. It is Sondheim, after all. Not for the vocally challenged.
Another good musical ruined. Why does Marshall keep getting gigs?
Daniel Radcliffe should be Jack!
