Here’s an issue that unites Democrats and Republicans in Massachusetts: Lawmakers there are virtually begging DirecTV and Sunbeam Television to end their contract standoff — or at least let Boston-area satellite subscribers see their hometown New England Patriots meet the New York Giants in the Super Bowl on February 5. It would be “almost unthinkable” to have local residents miss the game, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) said in a letter today to the companies. On January 14, the TV station owner took down its Boston NBC affiliate WHDH and CW affiliate WLVI — as well as Miami’s Fox affiliate WSVN. It wants higher fees for the stations; DirecTV says the price hike comes to 300% — more than it’s willing to pay. “If people in Boston miss the Super Bowl this year because of this dispute, I can assure you that it will lead more and more people to throw up their hands and say, ‘a pox upon both of their houses’,” Kerry wrote. Although he can’t force the companies to end the dispute he says that he will “continue to work to urge the FCC to ensure that access to major live events for hundreds of thousands or millions of people not become a recurring tool for leverage in these negotiations.” Kerry’s letter follows similar messages from Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and the Massachusetts House delegation asking the companies to settle before kickoff. DirecTV wrote back that it would like to air the game and awaits “confirmation from Sunbeam Television that they are onboard with Senator Kerry’s solution.”

If Kerry’s so passionate about this dispute, why doesn’t he just BUY DirecTV? God knows between he and his wife he has the money!
Because then he would be the one saying he won’t pay a 300% increase. He likes it in congress where he can pressure other people to spend their money how he sees fit.
sounds like a first world problem. Why don’t you just hook an OTA Antenna up to the tv?
Yup. A $100 investment for a good HD aerial (or $15 if you found your antenna at a thrift store like I did
) and I haven’t missed DTV or cable one bit.
I hope and I wish that Scott and John Kerry would help the helpless viewers right now. I strongly believe that both Ed Ansin and his Sunbeam Television should be scolded by the FCC as punishment for truly to get to wanting DIRECTV to pay up as they are trying to be very much money hungry and they are very much attempting to be like the Neil Bogart from Casablanca Records fame of the 1970′s and trying to be like the Bernard Madoff’s, the Enron’s and the Worldcom’s from the 2000′s and trying to bribe like the General Tire/RKO General (formerly owned what is now WHDH NBC 7 of Boston) of the 1960′s and the 1970′s by forcing Directv to accepts a very big rate and fee increase for the rights to carry his stations so he could spend the money very lavishly and very recklessly so he could spend it on buying luxury homes, luxury cars, join up for luxurious clubs, and other luxurious materials then wanting to improve all 3 of the stations he owned to compete for ratings. Sunbeam should be force to put those stations back right now and settle a deal latter. If Sunbeam fails to allow DIRECTV to resume carry i’s stations without a deal, then the FCC would have to take hard action by forcing them to give up control of all 3 stations, if Sunbeam fails to give up control of all 3 stations, then the FCC would gladly alllow other broadcasters to buy the stations with me wanting NBC both WSVN 7 and WHDH 7 for the NBC affiliation by spinning WTVJ 6 off to FOX News Corp and they also buys WLVI 56 and combined it with WFXT FOX 25 to become MYNET with the CW going to Boston’s WSBK 38 with a concession that they would promise not to blackout all the viewers with cable and satellite for 12 years when negotiating an agreement to carry the stations. This will be the true punishment for Sunbeam’s being very dishonest and very selfish to all it’s viewers who watch their stations. This will also applied to my fears that Sunbeam will fail to allow DIRECTV to restore their stations to all it’s customers before the Super Bowl on NBC and the Daytona 500 on FOX. I very honestly helping all you viewers and not meant to rant to the viewers. I feel that the retransmission content abuse is totally getting out of control. I urged all of the viewers in both Boston and Miami to boycott both Ed Ansin and his Sunbeam Television Company right now.
Remember when people just turned on the TV and didn’t have to worry about contracts blocking out their programming? This is yet another reason why I don’t subscribe anymore.
Since nothing important is going on in the world right now, I’m glad John “D student” Kerry has so much time on his hands that he is getting involved in a contract dispute between two private enterprises. But then again, that’s what politicians do: poke their noses in where they don’t belong.
Wish they could have this same passion for the American people and stop that bitter dispute over…
Why not just have/request NBC Sports broadcast the Super Bowl on Channel 603 or 604 and forget about channel 7?
