EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has hired Karen McCullah & Kirsten Smith to adapt 29, the novel by Adena Halpern. John Davis is producing. The book is a high concept comedy about an elderly woman who wakes up in the body of her 29-year old self and finally has the chance to do things right. McCullah & Smith’s credits include Legally Blonde and The House Bunny. In addition to solo projects, they are scripting Love It Or Leave It for Chockstone Pictures, which they are producing with Seth Jaret and Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz and Roger Schwartz. The scribes are repped by Paradigm and manager Seth Jaret.

Genius! This is a concept that has never, ever been done before.
That’s sarcasm, right? ABC and the WB tried this kind of concept, at the same time, in 2002 with “That Was Then” and “Do-Over.”
Well, if John Davis is producing it, it’s gotta be good. HAHAHAHAHA.
I mean, seriously, how many movies have been based on this premise? Hacks!!!
YAY!! Huge congrats to Karen and Kristen. It’s awesome to see women being hired for assignments and especially for women-centric movies. Who gives a rat’s ass if the story’s been done before? It can be fun and new every time with the right writers. Gosh, I bet all of you are hoping no one ever makes another boy-meets-girl story or monster-in-the-house or any of the other 15 ideas that are done over and over. Idea isn’t nearly as important as script, and it takes a good script to make a good movie (so long as it’s not f’d up by studio notes). This one looks like it might be really good.
There have been 77 spec scripts sold with this premise, and 8 of them made thus far. (I’m counting Male movies as well, like 18 again, Vice Versa and Big)
YAY!

Wasn’t this done a few years ago in reverse in 13 GOING ON 30 w/ Jennifer Garner? Been there, done that…
The concept may be hackneyed, but Seth Jaret is a great guy and I’m glad to see him making tracks.
Is that gonna be Heigl’s comeback? I smell Oscar!
Ugh – one step forward with Bridesmaids, two steps back with this.
It’s interesting there are as many bad movies as there are when so many people seem to know whether a project will be good or bad without even having read a page of the book it’s based on.
For those of us old enough to remember, “Big” was the fourth of the body/age-switching comedies that came out that year or so. And “13 Going on 30,” far from being the first of its premise, is wonderful.
One of my favorite books of all time!! I can’t wait to see it!!
The book is fantastic, very entertaining, and I can’t wait for the movie!
Adena is such a great writer! I can’t wait for this!
Adena Halpern’s novels are amazing. i’m so happy someone is turning this into a film!
Has anyone else read Target Underwear and A Vera Wang gown?? It is the best! Adena Halpern is such a great writer! They should make that into a film too!
I love that Target Underwear and A Vera Wang Gown! You are so right – that should be a film too!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Wow! great cutting edge programming! If you have trouble watching this show, it’s not your TV;s reception. This premise is covered with DUST! My prediction; 29 viewers the first week falling off to NINE the second week and then hopefully a quiet death to one more worn out, tired, embarrassing premise.Wow who the hell actually collects a check for coming up with crap like this.
Our Book Club LOVED this book! At our meeting we called Adena to discuss, she was so gracious. At the time Shawn Levy was filming Real Steel in our hometown in Mason, MI. Is he still planning on directing 29?
I loved Adena’s book, it was fresh and original. I can’t wait to see the movie!
If you haven’t read the book your opinion isn’t valid, this book was hilarious and and so easy to read.. It will be a fantastic movie if they can highlight it the way the author intended it.
