UPDATE: Terra Nova Cancelled — Series Being Shopped To Other Networks
When Fox’s executives face reporters during the network’s portion of the winter TV Critics Association press tour on Sunday, the futures of two series — freshman Terra Nova and veteran House — are expected to be a popular topic (along with the survival chances of low-rated cult favorite Fringe of course). The producers of Terra Nova and House were hoping to find out whether their shows are being renewed by end of December. (House creator David Shore has been vocal about needing time to end the series properly if this indeed is its final season.) That didn’t happen, but Fox brass are pressed to make a decision quickly, especially in the case of Terra Nova, which has to go into production by April in order to be ready for fall. And what a difficult decision it is going to be as the network will have to make it in a vacuum. Three of
Fox’s four new drama series this season, or 75%, have yet to premiere. And the network’s drama pilot scripts are only now starting to come in. So the network, which doesn’t have many drama slots open, may have to make a decision on two hourlong series before the debut of the majority of its freshman dramas and before it has seen its drama development for next season. Things may get a little bit clearer in the next three weeks, when midseason dramas Alcatraz and The Finder will premiere and Touch will get a preview ahead of its March debut. Still, committing to new seasons of two modestly rated existing series so early with so many unknowns is risky. Which means that Fox may try to hold off until the last possible minute to make a call on Terra Nova and House, with Terra Nova at the moment appearing more likely to be renewed.

I don’t care about either of those series. Just give us one more season of Fringe.
i agree! i saw all three shows, the only one i want to see more of is Fringe. House was on its last legs, and Terra Nova was simply a disappointment that never got off the ground.
I could care less about house, but please one more season of frine, and I really enjoyed terra nova, a lot of shows had rocky starts yet after a season they took off TERRA NOVA has a lot of potiental
Seconded. Just one more season. No hard feelings either way since it does have low ratings (albeit very good DVR numbers).
That show has produced some of the best sci-fi I have ever watched and the acting is just tremendous from all the principal actors.
They should consider bringing back The Chicago Code. Seriously the only thing I watch on Fox currently is New Girl. They need more variety.
I tuned in to ‘New Girl’ early on but it was frustrating not knowing when I switched to Fox whether there’d be a new episode on or if there’d be another episode of ‘X-Factor’.
For a show that wasn’t very good yet had potential, I didn’t feel like doing battle with Simon Cowell to find out whether or not the show finally reached that potential.
New Girl is overrated crap. Or at least it was for the first few episodes. Perhaps it’s one of those shows that makes sense NOW. But i always felt that in order for the premise to work, they should have started with them already being friends and done flashbacks if they felt the need to show how they became friends. That pilot was so implausible and Zooey’s character so unlikable that i couldn’t take it seriously and still don’t want to.
While I agree that “Terra Nova” was underwhelming to say the least, there is no fesable way it makes economic sense to renew “Fringe” for yet another season. It is the lowest rated series on the network – possibly on all of the big 4. It’s time is done.
Agree 110%. *bleep*-can both of them and renew Fringe for another season. House had a good 8 years and is now mediocre, at best. Terra Nova is just plain terrible. Meanwhile, Fringe always provides riveting drama.
Wow aren’t you all some harse opinionated people. Terra Nova Is a series that should stay peroid. Fringe, omg please, don’t mention that borring show again. I turned to that show and everyone in my house who was watching was sleep inside 15 min. And mind you the kids were the ones watching something else.
What is so impossible to opening the mind to the world of imagination. Well I understand, you probably can’t create mentally what you never had as a kid.
FOR ALL TO KNOW i NOMINATE TERRA NOVE TO RETURN FOR A 4TH SEASON… AND YES I KNOW WE HAVEN’T STARTED WITH THE SECOND YET. BUT FAITH IN GREAT WRITING ABILITIES, AND THE FOX EXEC’S TO PULL OUT AND SUSPEND ANOTHER SEASON NOT THIS, IS GONNA HAPPEN. iM WILLING TO START TAKING BETS TERRA NOVA WILL RETURN…………… HOW YOU LIKE THEM ODDS
Terra Nova has appeal to all age groups. It should be renewed and it will produce revenue for Fox. Children of all ages love Dinosaurs.
More Dinosaurs
More Danger
More Family Adventure
Less Family worrying about school and things no one cares about when Dinosaurs roamed the earth
Less stupid boy/girl drama
Then maybe I will watch again
thank you
Agreed. I liked te show up until the point when Jim had to sing “Go Away Liitle Spider” so his daughter wouldn’t be scared of them anymore. After that I couldn’t take it seriously, they’ll need to tone down the young children drama and make it more adult, make it like a prehistoric Breaking Bad and I guarantee it’ll stay on for a long time
prehistoric Breaking Bad? Are you serious?
a) this is not cable, it’s network, it can’t be as dark or edgy as a show like Breaking Bad
b) those shows are not remotely similar, and can’t really be compared against each other. what the hell would a prehistoric Breaking Bad look like anyway?
What JohnDoe said.
It’s ridiculous that Hugh Laurie is getting paid 700k per episode of House when it puts up such mediocre ratings.
Laurie is the biggest reason the series was a hit in the first place. He is getting big bucks now to retro-actively compensate for being underpaid at the start. It’s called leverage, and in Hollywood it is the most powerful currency there is.
It’s not ridiculous at all .I can’t listen those things guys…Hugh Laurie is one of the greatest actors ever on TV ..Who would watching House without him ? and still is genius.. 7-8 mil viewers for an 8 yrs old drama is damn good… thx to Laurie House had millions of viewers … He gain top ratings like 29mil viewers in S4.. Terra Nova or any other series never get so much viewers especially on FOX… I’m not fanatic of House but S8 is really good and numbers are good…. Series will be renewed if Hugh Laurie wants it and believe he doesn’t want another season.. He said that he wants to retire and do more movies… FOX own him a lot … It was the No1 topic on Facebook for 2011 and in Record Guinness 2012… so in my opinion FOX wants to keep a good line not so risky
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON’T CANCEL [H]OUSE!!! I LOVE this show so much and it is no way close to exploring all that it can and should. I wanted to like TERRA NOVA, but just didn’t. And I am not a fan of FRINGE.
I have never missed one episode of [H]OUSE. I watched Hugh Laurie for a few minutes and thought to myself, WHO’S THAT!! He was AMAZING and he STILL is. I think the writer’s are going to give us a great season 8, but it won’t be enough time to end the show in the way that it deserves to end.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON’T CANCEL [H]OUSE!! (Unless Hugh Laurie wants to end it, of course).
Agreed!!!!!! Don’t cancel House!!! Still the best show on TV!
Cancel House it has run its course the same crap every week
you can predict whats going to happenand it all fall back to house being an ass to somebody it old
I was really into terra nova its probably closer to reality than house lets face it no Hospital would allow a doctor to practice in real life if they were like house
Neither are tough calls. House should be euthanized because it is old and creaky and has already lived past the date at which it should have been put down, and Terra Nova should be cancelled because it is crap and the odds are Fox couldn’t make something worse if it tried. Like I said, easy calls.
David Shore has already FUBAR’d House so badly there’s no possibility of “tidying things up.” Let it go already.
As for Terra Nova, give us more of what we saw in the finale, and less of everything else, and you might actually have a show worth watching.
Please cancel Terra Nova. Biggest disappointment of the season. There is no hope for that show. And ratings will go down every week if they will renew it. That show is for children age 8-15. And it pretends that it is for adults.
Why do you think its a big disappointment? Because everyone says so?
Well, for starters, if “everyone” says that, it tells me that it’s a pretty good barometer.
Its a slily series down!!!!!!!
I cant believe that people don’t like Terra Nova. What’s wrong with an action show family values? This show has plenty of action, suspense, character developement and morals. The Fringe is a good show too. It reminds me of watching X-Files growing up. House is a medical whirlwind based on a successful formula but got pretty redudant after season 5…I’m tired of stressing about shows I like being on the chopping block because tv execs have itchy trigger fingers. All I hope is that we get to find out what’s out in the Bad Lands…
“What’s wrong with an action show family values?”
It’s boring for grownups. Put the show on Nickelodeon where it belongs. Of course, that rules out the current budget levels, so the series concept is simply a non-starter. There isn’t an audience for it big enough to support the budget, not on ad-supported networks anyway.
I like the suggestion above for a “prehistoric Breaking Bad,” except that broadcast is too chicken to do that (and the FCC wouldn’t let them in any case).
The moral of the story could be that good sci fi and fantasy has to migrate to cable – The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Game of Thrones and True Blood are all doing fine, without the shackles of being family-friendly. They target a grownup audience who wants (more or less) intelligent storytelling or at least a lot of sex and mayhem to hold their interest.
The networks are trying a whole slew of new sci fi/fantasy stuff again for 2012-13, maybe more than ever before. I’m still not convinced that broadcast is friendly territory for anything but the lowest-common-denomenator stuff – even Once Upon a Time is starting to falter – but the networks can’t afford to think that way, because to stick to cop shows and sitcoms just means that even more of their audience will flee to cable, in search of anything decent to watch.
Hey, I agree with you, I too loved this series but, I don’t see they whole big deal of what’s wrong with it? I get it that not many people like the FAMILY VALUES part, but we are starting to come into a world of that value not being cared about anymore. Just gotta add a little more action parts for the adults thats all. And, you can’t leave the show off at a cliff hanger… I am dying to know what happens next!
I agree, I think Tera Nova has great potential and should be given a chance to prove it. What is in the badlands?!?! I must know!!!
“What’s wrong with an action show family values? This show has plenty of action, suspense, character developement and morals…”
…and is about characters impossible to care about and a family that is so insufferably stupid and unlikeable one would be happy to see it become dinosaur food. Why is it whenever someone says a show’s strongest attribute are its “famblee values,” it’s a sure bet that show will be simple-minded, dumbed-down, and unoriginal to a fault?
Please more Terra Nova. I’m done with House. That show is so over and Fringe lost me at the end of last year. I simply don’t care about it. Terra Nova has so much more story to tell. Don’t cancel it too soon.
I concur! Don’t get rid of Terra Nova…still more story to tell! It’s family friendly show and not like all that other reality tv show crap on nowadays. I love the characters and yeah it may seem cheesy at some points but you really get drawn into the characters’ lives. Sure there are things that could be improved but don’t get rid of the show before it has a chance to really shine!
FRINGE has been spot-on excellent; but, the first half of this season has been a no go; I am sad to say I do not think it will come back for another year. Shame, because the writing and acting has been off the charts; the episode White Tulip was excellent. Beleive me, I’d love to see it get another year … but, do not think it is in the cards.
Let’s give TERRA NOVA naother shot.
i like terra nova. i think with a little work it could become a very good show. remember this is only the first season and i think it will get better.
Terra Nova was produced and marketed with the overt intention of becoming a large-scale media franchise. Fox needs to understand that has not happened. Instead, the show has generated modest-to-poor ratings. More importantly, it has UTTERLY FAILED to take root in the popular imagination on any level. Is that really going to change with the production of a second season?
Also at this point House is probably done. Cancelling both shows woukd send a strong message about their confidence in their drama development.
Cancelling Terra Nova would just prove to me that they can’t keep a good show anymore. Terra Nova isn’t just for adults, and to say that it should be is ignorant. It’s a family based show, and my family loves to sit down and watch it together.
House went from their premiere drama in ratings to mediocre, but I had thought Laurie had already said he wanted out. So, why not let it go? Frankly, Fox hasn’t given enough time to a lot of series – most recently “Chicago Code” and so it hasn’t been able to build up any loyalty for it’s programming.
It has hopes that Alcatraz becomes “Prison Break” good for a few seasons of solid ratings.
For as much as the above commentators grouse about Laurie’s paycheck, nothing dwarfs the immense expense that has been “Terra Nova” which never found it’s legs and where cost-to-return ratios are all wrong. I will be very surprised if Terra Nova gets a callback. Maybe Fox has bet too much to let it go, but the best comparison to it is “Caprica”
Fox right now has one really stable drama (Bones), and the rest is either reality or comedy. What it comes up with to fill in those hour blocks is going to be important. It’s not whether House or Terra Nova get the axe this year; it’s that at some point, something will – and there has to be a plan.
“Finder” the Bones spin-off did mediocre ratings in it’s preview last year, and I don’t see it latching onto any real run; but we’ll see.
Better writing and more action and Terra Nova could be a hit. More Dean Geyer would not hurt either.
Terra Nova was getting interesting; Cancelling it in the face of the garbage that is upcoming is ridiculous (Finder looks horrible; Alcatraz looks like it might be boring).
Isn’t House all about the international money? I believe it is the most watched show in the world so even if Fox takes a loss in the U.S. it brings in a lot of money through international sales.
Fox doesn’t produce House, NBC does, so Fox doesn’t see overseas or syndication money. NBC would have to lower the fees Fox pays in the hopes of making up the money in other ways.
How do they derive that most watched in the world stat? Does it include illegal downloads? I know many US shows are a season or two behind so there is a good chance ratings in other countries will dip as the newer seasons come out just as they have in the U.S.
I loved House but it desperately, truly needs to end.
“I loved House but it desperately, truly needs to end.”
Yeah, HOUSE should have wrapped at least three seasons ago.
Terra Nova is horrible and lame. The stories are terrible. NO ONE watches this show. Can’t believe this show was ever greenlit in the first place. Kill it and move on.
I really like Terra Nova and I hope it gets picked up – if only for the pleasure of watching Stephen Lang be awesome every week. Though I’m apparently one of the few who also really enjoys the Mark/Maddy charming courtship.
But I understand FOX’s hopes for their midseason – I’m looking forward to Alcatraz and Touch too – though I’m more likely to stick with Alcatraz and give up on Touch after an episode or two. I do hope Terra Nova can stay in the mix.
You’re not alone. There are many fans of the cute old fashioned relationship of Maddy and Mark. It reminds me of Laura and Almanzo from Little House on the Prairie and I think that’s what they were going for. Terra Nova is very much like the old Pioneer days. I love that about the show. You won’t find a lot of love for them from fanboys. They just like things to blow up and people to get killed. There is more to Science Fiction than BSG which I hated. It was so dark. Terra Nova is a show for the whole family. That’s why it’s on a 8 not 10. So I truly hope Fox brings it back and makes a few little changes. Like perhaps having Mark become a regular and Maddy should definitely be given more to do perhaps be in the lab and do research in the field. This show has so much potential. I really hope Fox gives it another season.
Kill the entire cast except Stephen Lang and rebuild the series around him. Forget the boring-ass family angle. If you have lots of dino action, the kiddies will watch. That might save the show, but if the writing still sucks, it’s still doomed and there’s no getting around the budget. The dinos are what could have the show, but they’re pricey.
I enjoy Mark & Maddy too. I like most of the characters they just need better dialogue. And I would like it if they brought Lucas back into contact w/Terra Nova if they would make him less…psychotic. Since they killed off Josh’s girlfriend in the finale I wondered if the intention was a triangle between Lucas/Skye/Josh. I hope Terra Nova gets renewed, I really want to see them get along w/o contact w/the future.
If they don’t dump both the are accepting mediocrity and losing the chance to lead and innovate. Fatal decisions.
Bingo. The networks are perched on the edge of a death spiral (NBC is already circling the drain) because they are forced to program for mass audiences that are fleeing to cable because shows for mass audiences are guess what B O R I N G.
It’s all the same old crap. I recognized old Star Trek scripts in Terra Nova (some of the writers used to write for Star Trek and they just pulled their old crap out of the wastebasket!) Those ideas were old years ago when originally used (and re-used, and re-re-used).
That’s why broadcast is losing audience to cable. But being solely ad-supported, networks can’t afford to program for an audience of 3 million or whatever. They’re trapped and their only possible way out is through some startling new solution, yet to be discovered.
Maybe there is no solution and they really are doomed, but shouldn’t they be doing everything humanly possible to find out? One thing is for certain, whatever that solution is, Terra Nova isn’t it. They need to open up as many timeslots as possible to give themselves maximum opportunity to find that possibly mythical soltuion.
Amen. The nets are terrified to break formula, but they’ll face a far worse fate if they don’t get really creative really fast.
House makes new episodes? I swore they just shot the one and play it every week. 1. Patient has mysterious illness. 2. The cantankerous but lovable Dr. House saves them with a shocking and unconventional treatment. 3. Repeat.
That’s why it’s called a PROCEDURAL. It’s been that way from day one.
it’s a medical drama lol everytime you need a disease ,a patient, treatment etc lol what they should do ? start investigations, take weapons and other stuff? lol
I think FOX will renew Terra Nova but I wonder if they will cut the episode order to 10 from 13 thereby cutting the budget?
Alcatraz will get a new season and be paired with Terra Nova on Mondays in all likely hood.
question, If Fox cuts Terra Nova to just ten episodes a season, how many years would it have to run to have enough for syndication?
Seriously, not sure how many episodes are needed.
House has been on life support for years. It’s time to let it go.
Terra Nova could become a great show but needs some work. It at least has potential, unlike House (see above).
House is horrible this season. They should think about cancel it. People just talk about it to say how bad it is now and how laughable the new actresses are. No one takes it seriously anymore.
