EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that Ugly Betty and True Blood alum Grant Bowler has been tapped as the lead in Syfy’s new original series Defiance. The project is a live-action drama, written/executive produced by Farscape creator Rockne S. O’Bannon, which was developed concurrently with an online video game by Trion. “Grant’s charismatic charm and his depth as an actor make him the perfect anchor as we build the ensemble for this sweeping adventure series,” said Syfy’s president of original content Mark Stern.
Set on a future Earth, Defiance introduces players and viewers to a world where humans and aliens live together on a planet ravaged by decades of war and transformed by alien terra-forming machines. It centers on Jeb Nolan (Bowler), the law-keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion. Nolan is a former Marine who fought in the alien conflict and suffered the loss of his wife and child in the war. The trauma transformed him into a lone wanderer in the wilds of this new and dangerous world. Defiance seems to be blending Western and alien themes, something that last year’s feature Cowboys & Aliens attempted to do, but the series is set in the future. New Zealander Bowler is best known for his recurring roles as Vanessa Williams’ squeeze on Ugly Betty, as werewolf Cooter on True Blood and as Capt. Gault on Lost. Scott Stewart (Legion) is directing the series, which is slated to begin production April 2012 in Toronto. Universal Cable Prods is producing.

Love Grant Bowler as an actor…he was great on “True Blood” and “Ugly Betty”. I’m sure he’ll be awesome in this part.
Ok, finally, a project from SciFy that sounds good. I’m not liking the toronto setting, though.
They’re shooting in Toronto (for the tax credits), not setting it there. They could pass it off as Future Detroit or Future Scottsdale, Arizona for that matter.
he is the best actor ever and obvi has the best team of representation…as evidenced by his past and present projects! annnnnd he’s supa dupa talented AND SEXXXXXXAY! can’t wait to see him in defiance! WOO HOO GRANT BOWLER I <3 U
Grant Bowler is not only a great actor, but an good bloke too. I’m so happy for him!
Alright now SyFy, it sounds good. But if it’s too cute i’ll put it on mute.
Sounds like a cool premise and like the world of humans and aliens living together, very early Star Wars. Enjoyed Bowler as the badass COOTER on “True Blood”…so seems like a great choice to anchor this show.
Great casting news! Loved Grant in ‘Lost’ and ‘True Blood’, and ‘Ugly Betty’! So refreshing to see they went with a great, strong actor to lead this show, and equally happy Rockne S. O’Bannon will be behind this. This is already shaping up to be a series to watch. Oh, and can they please cast Grant as the next Bond villain. He would kill it!.
Grant Bowler deserves this great new role as he works hard is very focussed and has a lot of integrity.A great choice and I am sure he will be perfect for the role.Good luck to you Grant Bowler.
This sounds like it could be a breakout show for Scyfy. Like the premise, and I think Bowler is a great choice… He’s been awesome in all the above shows. About time he got his own. Congrats.
Love GB. The only aspect/actor “Atlas Shrugged” that was professional/watchable.
Dare I say, this sounds good? Nolan’s character description makes me think of the Stephen Lang character from Terra Nova, but I’m hoping he’s more like Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly) and has a sense of humor.
I loved this. When it was called Firefly. And was Awesome. This sounds like a ripoff of that.
Still, I will watch this.
Firefly had no aliens. While there was a western feel to it, it was set in space, not a war-ravaged earth.
Defiance has the potential to be its own thing.
I liked watching him on-line hosting The Amazing Race Australia, it’s what the show used to be.
The first season of Farscape freakin’ rocked, and while subsequent seasons couldn’t match the first, it was still good fun. Looking forward to this one.
It sounds a bit like Gerry Anderson’s Space Precinct (humans and aliens existing together) except that it takes place on a future Earth.
