The Guardian in the UK is among those reporting that a woman who served as former News International CEO Rebekah Brooks’ personal assistant for 19 years has been arrested in connection with the News Of The World phone-hacking scandal. UK press report that Cheryl Carter was picked up this morning on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice in a police probe. It’s the latest evidence that investigators are still focused in on the top brass of News Corp’s UK newspaper arm and have not backed away from looking at Brooks, who was arrested in July after the scandal that shuttered NOTW broke open. Carter no longer works for News International or Brooks, the Guardian said.

Just to add to this story: Carter is accused of having deleted emails, lots of emails. The question, of course, is did she act on her own initiative or was she following orders? If the latter, who gave them? The UK does not have plea bargaining as such, but helping the police in their further investigations is taken into consideration if she is tried and found guilty. Will this topple Rebekah Brooks? If so, will she then take one for James or Rupert?
Where is the Justice Department investigation into whether News Corp/Fox News was engaging in phone hacking here in the U.S.? Are we really supposed to believe their activities were confined to the UK?
didn’t you hear? rupert is on twitter! all is forgiven.
“Are we really supposed to believe their activities were confined to the UK?”
Are we really supposed to believe that activities were confined only to Murdoch owned properties?
Newspapers have been going through trashcans, bribing the household help and doing every sleazy thing possible since the invention of the press.
You think only News of the World figured out ways to exploit the new technology of cell phones etc.?
Piers Morgan knows better….and so do you.
We won’t follow up here because it is highly unlikely that it is even a crime in this country (you have no presumption of privacy when using a wireless device) and because it would embarrass CNN, The NY Times and every other news outlet.
The zeal of prosecution went out of the balloon when they realized it couldn’t be confined to NewsCorp.
The FBI looked into it, and said there was nothing there.
And yeah, I do believe that, as the tabloid news media in the UK is a whole ‘nother sort of beast compared to US media.
Maybe prosecutors think that guilt can be established for Cheryl Carter because she is the only one in the organization with the ability to tell right from wrong.
