The trendy new term at TCA is, “That’s a high-class problem,” and the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother has one. The show is improbably enjoying its best ratings ever during its seventh season and is also CBS’ youngest-skewing series. And while the series is contracted to remain on the air through next season, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be “8 and out” for the show. Its co-creator and co-showrunner Carter Bays said during a TCA panel this morning that there hasn’t been a discussion about setting a series end date. “Oh, we’ve talked about it,” he admitted, “because we’ve gotten the question a lot. But I don’t think we can say what it will be just now. It’s not a high priority for us. I imagine when we’re going into the final season, we’ll get people hip to that. But right now it’s hard for us to say it will be May 14, 2000-whatever. It will happen when we’re officially out of ideas.” Bays added that he knows what the Mother endgame is going to be but naturally had no inclination to share it. Star Jason Segel added that he’d simply love to see the show go on long enough so the story comes to a natural conclusion, “whether that be 8 or 9 years. I was so relieved when I found out there was an actual plan,” he said.
After the panel, Bays elaborated a bit on the idea of setting the end date. “We totally might want to go beyond Season 8,” he noted. “Obviously, it won’t just be our call. It will also be about what our actors want and of course what CBS wants. But right now the network is delighted with the numbers we’re getting. If everyone’s game to go beyond Season 8, it will be a matter of how much story is left. We have that big ending planned, and we know how we need to get the characters in place to make it there.” Would nine seasons be the most that How I Met Your Mother would run then? Bays says he’s not necessarily saying that — or even if there will be a Season 9. “But it sure feels good right now to see how our numbers have trended up. Bottom line: We’ll do this show as long as it feels creatively fulfilling. And as long as they want us around.”

I hope this show goes on for several more seasons. I love all the characters. I want to see the hilarious exploits of Lily and Marshall trying to raise this child when just weeks earlier, Marshall was getting high at a concert with Ted and seeing these two people who are so used to living the wilder life deal with this baby in unusual circumstances.
I want to see what married life is like for Barney and Robin and to see a sibling relationship between Barney and Carly (his sister, potentially Ted’s future wife), because we all know there’s nothing more endearing than the way big brothers look out for their little sisters (this could make the possible Ted/Carly relationship a bit interesting too with a protective big brother around).
And then there’s obviously Ted. I can’t imagine anyone who has devoted 7 years of loving these characters and watching their stories and lives and hijinks unfold would be satisfied with ending it in Season 8 with a wedding and Ted meeting the mother. No, it has to go beyond that. We need to see how she becomes integrated into this group, how the romance happens, how Ted truly figures out that this woman is the one (because he sure as heck doesn’t know it the moment he meets her, I’m sure, but we know he moves fast, because he admits to calling her right away).
All I’m saying is that the material to keep this show going strong and maintaining it’s quality and humor is all there in troves. This show can do more than survive more seasons, it can thrive. Otherwise it’d feel like the end of The Truman Show where Jim Carrey walks out of the studio and that’s the end, leaving thousands of viewers just sort of confused as to what the heck just happened and frustrated that it could end just like that. At least that’s my opinion. Keep the show around as long as you can! The writers are brilliant, the cast is brilliant, the creators are brilliant and CBS would be genius to let it go on as long as it can.
when does season 8 air on tv?
i must say, i got hooked after i watched “The Bracket” episode, and im at the 7th season now an i still love the show? Yes the 2nd season was genius front to back, but show is still Legend (wait for it) Dary in my eyes…when your a legend, even ur worst material is genius
I disagree with those who are criticizing the amusement progression, I think that “how I met your mother” has not had one season, not even one episode that I have been disappointed with. I can not wAit for the 8th season to come out on Netflix, again the greatest show ever created!!!
