Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds will star in Big Eyes, the film that Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski wrote and will direct this spring.
Witherspoon and Reynolds will play Margaret and Walter Keane, whose paintings of large eyed children became one of the first mass marketed art sensations in the 50s and 60s, with prints sold in gas stations and every five and dime store. While Walter was the marketing genius, he also took the bows for doing the brush work, and was a regular on the TV talk show circuit, his shy wife was the actual artist in the family. When they split and she tried to get her due, they ended up in court, where a judge finally provided them with two easels and ordered them to prove it. Walter’s art reputation went down on the canvas.

Alexander and Karaszewski have been trying to make this film for years; the leads are such rich parts that numerous stars have been attached. Their Ed Wood director, Tim Burton, will produce along with Lynette Howell and Jamie Patricof. The latter duo resurrected the project with their new company, Electric City Entertainment.
“We are ecstatic to have this dream cast for our dream project. Walter is a larger-than-life antihero — charming, funny, dangerous, and a little crazy, said Alexander and Karaszewski in a statement. “Ryan will knock it out of the park. As for Reese, she will be perfect as Margaret — soulful, decent, transforming from vulnerability to learning to fight for herself.”
Principal photography is scheduled for the Spring. Witherspoon opens in the Fox comedy This Means War, while Reynolds stars with Denzel Washington in the Universal drama Safe House.
Alexander and Karaszewski are represented by UTA, Reynolds by CAA, and Witherspoon by CAA and Management 360. Burton is represented by WME.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Witherspoon trying for another Oscar run and trying to get away from the RomComs!
Good for her. Maybe I’ll start liking her work again.
Hey I am excited about this script. I remember the pictures when I was a teenager. We all wanted one. Later wondered why. But this story sounds great. Can’t wait.
Good script with the potential to make for a great film. Kate Hudson was originally attached — at first I choked when I heard her name, but she grew on me and I’m actually feeling a bit let down that she’s not doing it as it would have been nice to see her really challenge herself with this role.
With that said, Reese is perfect for the role. Ryan Reynolds, not so much. He’ll need to bring his A game for this dramatic role.
Love Alexander and Karaszewski, glad to see them getting this one off the ground.
Agree. It’s nice to see Reese attached to something like this, but Ryan seems unfortunately miscast. For some reason, Casey Affleck comes to mind as a better alternative.
Reynolds’ role sounds like the more challenging of the two, but I’m more interested in watching him than Witherspoon these days. I started catching up on his work after seeing him in Buried I have yet to see a bad performance from him. He was fantastic in The Nines and Chaos Theory.
Safe House is a drama? Man, ghat must have been one he’ll of a rewrite.
Trying for another Oscar run and getting away from RomComs.
I guess Reynolds didn’t get the memo like Pine and Hardy!
Sounds like CAA’s trying to revive two troubled careers. How do you justify people getting work when they are costing a fortune in lost box office revenue? Love the description of Reese’s character. Did she write it herself? I sincerely hope Ryan lands that TV series soon.
“Cynicism is the intellectual cripple’s substitute for intelligence.” -Russell Lynes
Cynicism? More like fact based reasoning, son. Lol
You know good for them – there’s a joyous sense to even their least successful movies that makes me want to see what they’ll do with this.
It’s great to see some indie cinema other than action adventure . Reece and Ryan are good actors . Looking forward to this Arthouse piece !
Good for Scott and Larry. Very much enjoyed their script for this. Casting here is spot on.
NOOOO.. Reynolds needs to stop working on all these projects..he needs to buckle down and get Deadpool done asap.
Except that Reynolds only mugs, he can’t act.
Buried?
The Nines? Chaos Theory? Smokin Aces?
Great subject for a movie. Not too keen on Ryan Reynolds being in it though, but we’ll see how that goes.
So the lead male is “charming, funny, dangerous, and a little crazy”, but they cast the most bland actor working today? Reynolds seems like a decent guy, but this is a guaranteed fail. Too bad.
Thank you. I see somebody’s publicist tried to stem back the groundswell of wtf and nooooooooooooooo’s!!!! Hahaha. Seriously. Could this casting be a bigger snooze fest? Guaranteed bomb. You don’t believe me, watch what witherspoon’s upcoming film does at the b.o.
This Means War is a terribly miscast movie all around and will bomb badly. Witherspoon is just not capable of pulling off the sultry vixen who men salivate over. There’s nothing wrong with that at all, she just needs to stick to her range.
Reynolds has no range at all. He’s just a mannequin with an extremely hard-working publicist. He’s been relentlessly promoted for over twenty years now and really still hasn’t caught on.
You wanna bet?
This should be an HBO original like Loud Family.
Another crash and burn for Witherspoon! And I agree with someone above about CAA trying to revive careers along with marrying a co-head. That will not help either!
Needs to be on TV not the big screen!!!!!!!!
Seriously? Witherspoon and Reynolds?
I guess these writers/producers/directors like throwing their time and money away.
Bad casting and another bomb at the BO!
Great script!! The casting so-so. Sure Reese can put it off, but there is no Ryan can. This film will tank because of him. This is merely a financing thing to cast him. Don’t why. All the films he does flop.
…I have this picture on the wall right above my computer..along with a reply letter from Ms. Keane.
I bought the painting in San Francisco in 1963.
I’m looking forward to seeing the movie…..
I’m so glad, this film will air. There so much women out there that are being abuse,it may not be fiscal, but emotional and mental. And this will so how we are strong and we should rise no matter what the situation. And I like Reese.
PS. I have a painting, the old ones with Walter
name.
Margaret’s self portrait On the Beach hangs above my computer. I first saw it in a bar in Long Beach, then I saw it again in her studio in Broadway in SFO. I wanted a copy but didn’t want to take home on the plane. In my first apartment I opened a painting left there and it was Her!
Looking forward to the movie. Margaret Keane will finally get the glory she deserves after all she was put through in the public eyes. The actors to me are fitting and without a doubt will do a great job!
Not worried about Reynolds at all, maybe because I haven’t seen the romcoms and comic book flicks.
You maybe surprised. Why not give it a chance.
I am so excited the movie will FINALLY be produced.
This is for all the good and moral women who work
hard and try to do the right thing. I love you sister!
We’re sisters too. Most art critics agree that her later work became more happy and vibrant with themes of the Bible’s promise of a paradise earth and peace with the animals due to her new faith. Can’t wait to see if that’s addressed in the film.
Glad to see this is coming out. I have a painting of myself at the age of 4 with big eyes painted by Margaret in 1954. It predates her marriage to Walter Keane. It will be interesting to see if they mention she was a great painter before she became married.
