ABC’s Shawn Ryan Drama On Verge Of Pilot Order, Martin Campbell Set To Direct
Last Resort, the large-scale drama from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan and feature writer Karl Gajdusek, has been given a pilot order. The news comes 2 days after the the Sony TV-produced project, which already had a hefty pilot production commitment, tapped Casino Royale helmer Martin Campbell to direct the pilot. The pilot also has a line producer and a casting director already on board. Last Resort is a thriller set in the near future when the country is very fractured and revolves around the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who become hunted fugitives after ignoring an order to fire nuclear missiles. They escape to a NATO listening outpost where they publicly declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation with 24 nuclear warheads. The show explores the society the fugitives create, the natives they meet and how what they’ve done affects the group and its unity. At ABC, Last Resort joins Roland Emmerich one-hour, metaphysical drama pilot set against the backdrop of the 2012 Presidential race. In addition to Last Resort, Ryan has another high-profile project in contention, a crime procedural with Criminal Minds creator Simon Mirren, which has a put pilot commitment at CBS.

Good lord, I’m exhausted just reading this summary.
So they refuse to deploy nuclear weapons in the line of duty, but they found their rouge nation on the basis of their capacity as a nuclear threat?
Tom Colicchio?
Why make a trillion when we could make… billions?
All the men in Sherwood Forest are shaking their heads. This sounds even worse then the premise of ‘Crimson Tide’. Finding refuge at NATO? Natives they meet!?!
On the Beach + Sea Quest DSV = Extraordinary Crap
BTW, those boomers wouldn’t make it past the next budget review.
Im an actress and the Best tv pilot script I ever read and read for was Ryan’s, “ride along” which was soon changed to Chicago code aired and cancelled… I think they were anxious to get a name attached in the lead and even though she was good, the actress did not carry across what I read. sometimes you’re just better off with undiscovered talent so the script and story can take the lead…
In a recent pilot I was in, they used a big movie director… Nice guy, but I felt like he hadn’t read the brilliant script… For my part anway. In one scene a camera move seemed what was written, an awesome flow(from the well known writer), but the director made a cut instead. Sometimes name directors and name talent can overtake such great writing it’s a shame.
The show got picked up, so I’m looking forward to seeing it, and hope all my few lines remain in.
I’m a huge fan of Ryan and out of all of the tv writers, I’d love to work with his material most.
I’m sorry, but could you explain the premise again, this time more slowly and using language that an 18-49 year old without a graduate degree in Convoluted Television Pilot Screenwriting could understand?
The crew of a submarine ignores an order to fire a nuke, secede from the United States and “declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation with 24 nuclear warheads”. Is that any clearer or where are we losing ya?
….but tell me more about the chow….
I’ve been excited for this project since the beginning. I really hope it’s good. I have complete and utter faith in Ryan and Campbell (though, you never should have touched Green Lantern, pal). This is going to be a blast…I hope…
Crimson Galactica.
Whew. Finally an antidote to 24.
Last resort is complete rubbish. The screen writers should give me a call to help them get it right. I have 20 years experience with submarines. Everything is wrong from the sub design to how the sailors operate. They need some serious consulting if they plan on making another season.
can’t they just air re-runs of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea?
I mean to make things a little more realistic…
