John Fogelman just phoned me to report that he and JJ Abrams went to dinner two weeks ago and came to the conclusion that the writer-director-producer is too busy to be a partner anymore in Fogelman’s company Factorymade Ventures. The pairing was announced with great fanfare last September after Abrams had taken a brief work sabbatical. At the time Abrams said in a press release: “I felt strongly about continuing to work with John, and this was a chance to support his latest ambitious enterprise, just as he has supported me over the years.” Abrams’ Bad Robot producing partner Bryan Burk was to play an active role in the new company, which was located adjacent to Bad Robot’s headquarters in Santa Monica.
But since then Abrams under his own Bad Robot banner is one of the busiest guys in showbiz with two major network TV shows (Person of Interest on CBS and Alcatraz on Fox) and a major sequel to Star Trek for Paramount as well as multiple apps like the just launched ‘Action Movie’ on iPhone and iPad. Not just Fogelman but insiders close to Abrams also assure me there’s been no falling out between the two men who have a long association dating back to William Morris and WME days as agent and client, and say the duo will likely work together again in the future. “But JJ needs to focus on Bad Robot and the movie he’s directing, the shows and apps and other projects we are working on,” a source close to JJ tells me. “I hope to collaborate with John in the future but this wasn’t it.” Concurs Fogelman: “It was not a good fit having to run everything through JJ and having him involved in every venture. He has no time to focus on this. That’s what the problem is. It’s now not possible to do this together. JJ’s career couldn’t be going better. And how much more can anyone be doing? Like right now he’s on the set everyday doing Star Trek.”
Added Fogelman: “Some may try to spin this into a negative for me. But I’ll be announcing some really cool stuff starting next week.” Fogelman tells me that one of those deals is with a major retail partner — “as exciting a company as any in the country” — which Abrams set up for Fogelman. Fogelman says another deal with a new client for a new venture announcing on March 1 will be the biggest project yet for his firm.
Fogelman, a former WME board member, says that when Factorymade Ventures was conceived with Abrams, it was to “find creatives and then start companies around them”. Fogelman brought with him the entire WME skunkworks division to develop a hybrid entertainment and media business and consulting firm.

Went to dinner and came to the conclusion that JJ was too busy?? Nice spin John. Per usual, you were caught in a lie and got fired. Trust me, the real story will come out soon. Be careful John, most of your financing has fallen out and WME stops paying you next year. Not to mention both Hasbro and Michael Bay think both you and your company are a big joke.
Nice conspiracy theory… considering that Bay is richer than ever because of John helping with putting together Transformers and that all Hasbro talks about now is growing in entertainment, it looks like John actually knows what he’s doing in business.
Congrats guys. It looks like both of you have really taken off. Way to stay elevated. A lot of is are rooting for you.
There is only so much time in a day..
This always sounded like a favor to John
hum what might happen to this venture now?
Why would Fogelman need a favor? It seems to me that JJ thought he could spend the time on this that is typically required as an active investor in any venture. With all the shows and movies, this feels like a high-class problem of not having enough time to do everything. Kudos to both for keeping the friendship and staying focused on quality work instead of mass quantity.
I think Fogelman is actually a very smart guy. There’s no way JJ Abrams has enough time to participate in a second company. It’s just not a good use of his creative energy. If I had to predict, I could see Fogelman’s company heading more in the consulting direction. But, as a fan of the guy, I think that’s a shame. He has all of the right qualities to be a great producer. He has the strategic thinking, the strength, and intelligence to put together some big studio movies. Maybe it will still happen. But I think he could be a pretty big force out there.
what a dumb comment. fogelman’s not a creative and what does he know about day-to-day production. business man I’ll give you that but producing is a stretch.
Smells like a PR spin – this is all BAD for the skunkers…
It’s called Skunkworks because it STINKS……
Ghost of William Morris past…
I heard that the next deal is with another talent that’s completely separate from JJ
Good for John
Hahahhaaaa, no SHIT. Crash. and. burn.
Let the filmmakers make film not charlatans of the brand world.
A good guy finishes first for once, congrats to David Lonner. Now move him to UTA or CAA.
Fogelman over estimated his own value ..When he was at WME he succeeded because he had a
Big Company behind him … Now he is on
“Fogelmans Island” alone and left to figure out the world…He is a bit stunned just like any executive who leaves a Studio or Network and wonders why his calls are not returned…”They were my Friends”…
I wouldn’t bet against Fogelman. He never got any favors building up business at WME and he doesn’t need them now. I’m still a big fan. The guy always seems to get it done at the end of the day.
Both of those guys know how to make money. I’m sure it’ll all be fine.
Oh people please. Factory Made is the Costa Concordia of useless nonsense startups. And don’t think its captain too wouldn’t be the first man overboard stepping over his team to fall into any life boat available. Trust me, his team will begin to defect. The head chick will bounce to hulu or google or back to Hollywood and her minion will follow. As for the captain, he is headhunted daily as would be expected and one day he will take the call and head over to some big enterprise looking for a hot headed douchebag deal maker with the leadership acumen of Custer, the humility of Stalin and the loyalty of Judas. His limited privately held company experience of two decades will become glaringly obvious in a fortune 50 atmosphere where he couldn’t manage a desk lamp let alone a team. His aspirations are large and surely he’ll get there one way or another but not before crashing his latest hubris driven vessel into an island only to jump ship leaving the wreckage behind and as always, snickering shamelessly all the way to the bank without regard for casualties and blinded by a misguided ambition built by an ego so hopelessly self aware and hellbent down a path of insidious betrayal he’s so enthusiastically paved; a road travelled only by those left in his destructive and obnoxious and deluded and self-serving wake. What a shining paradigm of the common post modern executive. Way to set an example you creep.
Wow dude, clearly you have issues and are obsessing way too much. Either you have a huge crush on the guy or you are a bitter old man – in both instances, way to call someone else a creep… like the pot calling the kettle black.
“leadership acumen of Custer, the humility of Stalin and the loyalty of Judas….”
ya gotta admit, this s#$& is good!
Fogelman never needed JJ to build ventures. After all, what does JJ know about investing and business? Did he even put in money? Sounds like he couldn’t even put the time. Sounds like the best outcome to involve him only when needed. Excited to hear what’s coming out next.
The only reason Fogelman was successful at William Morris was because the three W’s that ran the company had a combined IQ of a donkey. When Ari and company took over, they were smart enough to figure out that if Fogelman would turn on his former bosses, he would sooner or later turn on them. They pushed him out within a year…and now John is out on his own for the first time in his career. I agree, don’t count him out just yet…but his company is starting to feel like its all smoke and mirrors…kind of like his career at WMA.
An agent not managing a startup effectively? ORLY?
What actually makes this interesting is the sheer number of people sharpening their knives and drooling.
All this talk about John Fogelman is a waste of time. He is yesterdays news, just ask the guys over at WME. It is over for him. He will be selling real estate soon with his mother to make extra cash. Anyone looking to buy or sell a house?
I love J.J. Abrams, but dammit he’s seriously wearing down his image with all of stuff he’s doing. Pretty soon he’s going to be like Spielberg — having his name on everything that sucks.
I can guarantee from sources close to JJ Abrams, Bad Robot, and Fogelman that JJ fired John because he was sick of John’s act. Congrats to JJ, now he can finally let David Lonner do his job again.
