Jay Leno thought he was poking gentle fun at the lifestyles of rich and famous Republican presidential candidates — Mitt Romney in particular. But last Thursday when Leno’s slide show came to a location cited as Mitt Romney’s summer home — in reality an image of the Sikh holy shrine Golden Temple in Amritsar, India — it sparked a diplomatic incident. And now, a lawsuit charging Leno and NBC with libel.
Dr. Randeep Dhillon of Bakersfield filed the suit today in Los Angeles Superior Court. On behalf of himself and Bol
Punjabi All Regions Community Organization, the suit charges that the broadcast was libelous on its face and exposed Sikhs and their religion to hatred, contempt and ridicule because it portrayed the holiest place in the Sikh religion as a vacation resort owned by a non-Sikh. The suit charges that Leno’s use of the photo of the temple was intentional, deliberately false and “hurt the sentiments of all Sikh people in addition to those of the plaintiff.” The suit seeks general, special and punitive damages as well as court costs. It appears that video of the segment in question has been removed from NBC’s website.
Separately, Sikh leader Dalbeg Singh said today community leaders would seek an apology from Leno. India’s foreign ministry said a formal complaint had been lodged with the State Department in Washington.

A lawsuit? Geez, what a bunch of pussies. One day someone will get sued for cutting a fart.
Jeez. The joke wasn’t funny, but talk about being TOUCHY! A lawsuit? Gimme a break.
Good joke. It’s funny because Sikhism is another religion made by and for scammers, just like Mormonism.
Hey.. sounds like a game of hide’n go Sikh. There are hundreds of Sikh jokes on the internet and you dont see anyone complaining about them. Leno’s monolog is an editorial, his view and as such protected by the First Amendment. Tell them to all take one step backwards and, well you know the rest.
Live long and prosper Jay.
Any idiot with $25 can file a lawsuit and this proves it.
@Hattie Nuff : I am more concerned with the idiot called Jay Leno.
if he offends you, watch something else, for crying out loud, you baby…that’s what adults do
They don’t have a chance with this stupid suit. This is just an attempt a publicity. Quit abusing the judicial system you losers.
Randeep should’ve asked his brothers Matt and Kevin to kick the sh$t out of Leno. Forget the lawyers Randy, settle these problems like real Irishmen.
We have too many sacred cows in this country.
No, it’s a joke. Go away.
Ha Ha Ha – Love it….Pay Up Leno!…now that’s good comedy!
There is no case, move along.
Pathetic. why would any court decide to even hear this bull! these folks must not have anything else to do.
Should not tell sick jokes!
Well, if it’s any consolation for Dr. Dhillon, only about eight people saw the show. Leno hasn’t been funny in years. Vulgar, yes – funny no.
It’s become a diplomatic row between US and India so stfu.
It is a row between India and Jay Leno. The United States has nothing to do with this. Go complain somewhere else.
I’ve said for quite a while that Jay gets his writers from the detention class at Burbank High School.
You owe an apology to the Burbank High detention class.
This is BS. With SOPA, book banning in Arizona, and now this? It’s feeling more like a pre-Hitler Germany right now.
“hurt the sentiments of all Sikh people in addition to those of the plaintiff.”
By showing a picture? Wow, somebody needs to spend a little less time growing his hair and a little more time thickening his skin. See, they’re not so different, other cultures have religious retards as well.
Leno deserves it. These wacko comedians take things too far sometimes.
How come no one seems to care if American icons are demeaned?
My respect goes out to the Sikh community. They have a right to be heard, and they can’t be required to play good sport to Jay Leno. He ought to apologize to them. It was an innocent jest.
While the picture may have been hurtful to believers and should result in an apology, it was by no means an intentional slap. How could it be when it’s the work product of an ignorant staff who, I’m confident enough to surmise, wouldn’t know the difference between a Sikh Temple and a Shirley Temple.
@poonky : still NBC and Leno are liable.
liable? for what? for providing an opportunity to show that Sikhs can be just as childish as anyone else? point made; now, move on
Lighten up, Sikhs… the Pope wouldn’t sue if Jay had showed the Vatican, and Mickey wouldn’t sue if he had shown Cinderella’s Castle.
That’ll show you Jay! You should have stuck to making jokes about Christians. They’re the only ones that won’t retaliate with law suits or something sharp.
Guess who is attempting to make a quick buck? It is an absurd suit on its face. The allegations being made are hillarious on their face. Also, with all of the problems facing India, its government has the time to enable a transparent attempt at extortion? If this suit goes forward, you can kiss the First Amendment farewell.
Political correctness gone off the rails…lighten up Mr. Singh. It’s a joke. Period.
Sikh first to understand then Sikh to be understood…..
@Phil : Sikhs understand very well..Now Leno will understand and so will NBC. Time to turn the tables.
Hey Vikram – do you defend slanders (jokes) of all religions? Or just those of Sikh? Unless you’re busy defending every religion you are not living up to Sikh expectations which require “the courage to defend the rights of all who are wrongfully oppressed or persecuted irrespective of religion, color, caste or creed.” So where are you when people say “Jesus Christ” in vain, which disrespects the Ten Commandments? Where were your posts when South Park ridiculed Mohammed? Or do you only care to follow the tenets of being a Sikh when you want to?
Furthermore, your concept of “Maya” (Sikhs should avoid devotion to materialism/worldly attractions) is totally opposite your irrational fury over Leno’s joke. Seems to me truly following Maya would mean you would be able to cast off Leno’s “insult” because you are not attached to this building – this fleeting, worldly object – and you are more interested in meditating on God and reaching salvation.
