EXCLUSIVE: Former Hollywood agent John Fogelman just phoned to tell me that his FactoryMade Ventures and JC Penney are announcing a 3-year partnership on Friday. The retailer announced on Wednesday it is rebranding itself “jcpenney” and will have a new pricing strategy, corporate identity, new merchandise and updated stores by 2015. One of its brand partners will be Ellen DeGeneres. Penney wants Fogelman’s outfit to help ”re-imagine innovative media and entertainment opportunities”.
This is the introduction that Fogelman’s former client/investor/partner J.J. Abrams set up before the TV producer/filmmaker decided he was too busy and exited those roles. Abrams is friends with ex-Target Chief Marketing Officer Michael Francis who recently joined forces with ex-Apple Retail stores guru Ron Johnson to reinvent J.C. Penney. “They want my company to help reimagine the bricks and mortar experience and online experience,” Fogelman told me. “Just the way that we helped reimagine Hasbro from a toy company into a media company.”
Fogelman, whose company also advises Telefonica, claims that under the 3-year partnership with JC Penney his firm will be paid an annual consultancy fee. Fogelman says another deal with a new client for a new venture announcing March 1 will be the biggest project yet for his firm. Fogelman, a former WME board member, Fogelman brought with him the entire WME skunkworks division in September 2011 to develop a hybrid entertainment and media business and consulting firm.
Fogelman’s is not the only marketing and branding firm hired by J.C. Penney for the transformation to work alongside the retailer’s in-house creative team and its other key agency partners. The retailer wants Factorymade Ventures to make J.C. Penney into America’s favorite store and develop new concepts to reinvent the shopping and customer experience for customers. As such, the partnership will explore the entertainment, media and multi-platform delivery and experiential landscape.

Maybe Abrams left b/c the company’s big new development was working on “innovative” ads for JCPenny.
What’s a matter, guys? TJ Maxx wouldn’t take your calls?
He’s no Cameron Kadison.
Bought me some jcpenney stock!!! Woohoo
I bought some yesterday at $32 and today its up at $40. Thanks for the tip off Nikki! I’ll give you 10%.
These guys are class acts. Awesome partnership! At the end of the day, Fogelman was always a good dealmaker. Thus is huge.
I’ve known John for so many years at the agency…such a smart guy!! Way to go!!
THE ADVENTURES OF JCPENNEY: THE MOVIE 3D? Starring Jonah Hill as JC and Melissa McCarthy as Penney?
This news is boring. At what point will J.J ask him to stop throwing his name around. And good luck turning JC Penney around Fogelman. We all know why you ended up on that office high above WME, because you keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Ari and Brandt are nobody’s fools.
Just saw the teaser ads for JC Penny, and the most horrible aspect is the logo shown that reads: “jcp.” Come on. Don’t remove words from a company name. I know people feel the need to have some teeny smartphone app icon for a logo, but it’s the wrong way to go. Marty McFly and Doc Brown don’t test the DeLorean time machine in front of a jcp. It’s a JC Penny. Don’t throw out the company name when televisions and smartphones are THIS CLOSE to becoming one. You’ll need your regular-sized, easily recognizable company name back when that happens.
Guess I will have to stop calling it jaque penne.
The jcpenney stuff is impressive – read all about it yesterday. Love all the jealousy in the comments. Good for you John!
WME was very smart to part ways with John. He is a good dealmaker but a very dishonest partner. For some reason, he could never play well with others. Always thought he was smarter then everyone. Not to mention was a terrible leader. He drove so many great agents out of the company to other places like ICM, UTA and CAA. Unfortunately for him there is not much goodwill out there in the community. Really sad as he could have gone the distance if he were not so paranoid, selfish and dishonest. Just ask all of his ex “partners”.
Ron Johnson is the MAN! Love the Apple store concepts and the Target guy is no joke either. Hasbro was just a nothing toy company when they first started going into entertainment. I think it’s smart that JC Penney is moving into this space. Lord knows America needs the imaginative spirit again, especially after Steve Jobs passed. I’m rooting for this one – an American retailer with the guts to go for it.
Smart to do a 3 year deal… Transformations can take a while and JC Penney is clearly making some non-traditional steps to find innovation.
Has JMF ever been to a JCP?
If his company is even remotely responsible for the TV commercial I saw last night with all the women screaming over discount prices that they missed, he’s already failed miserably. I only had to see that ad once to know to change the channel or hit the mute button the other two times it aired last night in the shows I was watching.
Ron Johnson runs the show over there now and theres a good chance that whatever he’s thinking will mean good things for everyone involved. On the other hand JCP aint no AAPL so maybe he’s got more to think about
jcpenney has been floundering ever since its catalog business collapsed…they are the worst of all possible worlds, a pre-internet retailer that is trying to look hip without changing its core business methods or losing its internal bureaucratic timeservers…trying to be all things to all (lower middle class) people isn’t going to work no matter what sales strategy or branding they use
I don’t know why more companies that do re-brandings like this don’t change the name. For brands like Kmart, Sears, JC Penney, etc., that stodgy, cheap brand identity, why not call it something else? Especially if you’re going to spend millions changing out signage anyway?
Simple answer: in doing so, no one will be COLLECTING those millions.
Gotta love these posts – clearly all made by people who never had the balls to ever do something big and innovative. Apple had haters too in the 80′s… so did Target. Only time will tell but I bet these guys will accomplish more than you think.
John is obvisouly hurting for press that he had to pick up the phone and call you to break the news. Jc Penny is a floundering company that could be the next Eastman Kodak and the 3 year pact won’t last if JCP files chapter 11. Target is a much different company and whomever is running their brand is doing an excellent job with the likes of hiring top designers like Missinoi. John left WME because he couldn’t stand living in Aris shadow. Lets face it John has been out of the motion picture business for a long time and he let his underlings do all his script reading and dirty work. Its amazing he lead the motion picture dept at WMA so long but thats because Jim Wiatt had his head up his ass and was too busy to run the company the right way . John is the most selfish ego manic I know in the business. He is out for himself and the only reason the rest of the skunkworks team came with him is because they would have been shown the door at WME. Abrams is a busy and very talented man and parted ways with John because he doesn’t want to have his name/brand attached to anything that will fail.
Your comment is so ignorant and wildly off base. First, Michael Francis was the person running the Target brand for the last 15 years and brought top designers like Missoni to Target – that’s why this is such a big deal. He and Ron Johnson, who was the person responsible for building those cool a$$ Apple stores and the genius bar, JUST left to start the next project with John, which is jcpenney.
you are right… fogelman left because he didn’t want to live in ari’s shadow the way all of ari’s minions have to live well below his shadow. venit, please. whitesell, pretty girlfriend. rick rosen, next. he was the most profitable thing at wme and now wme is stuck without him and lost jj abrams too. huge loss only to feed ari’s ego and need to be the sole king for all to bend over to.
What a great sign! What I love about this is that while everyone else is focused on building up China, India, Russia, etc., JCPenney is an American company that has stores only here in America. Kmart, Sears – they all went by the way side. If this is a chance at giving our communities and economy a boost, I am all for it. Won’t see me pointing fingers, nothing but cheering you on.
