At today’s TCA panel on HBO’s new series Girls, executive producer Judd Apatow — also producer of the hit movie Bridesmaids — said there would not be a Bridesmaids 2 until the time is right. “We’re still promoting Bridesmaids 1; when the fog clears, we’ll see if there is an idea worth doing,” he said. “People like to send up projects without thought.” (On Wednesday, Bridesmaids co-star Melissa McCarthy said at TCA that there are no plans to move forward with a sequel anyway without co-writer and co-star Kristen Wiig.) Apatow added that the motivation for making a sequel has to be “not just, you know, how much money we could make? That usually leads to Jaws 3D.”
Apatow also addressed the “fuck you” he dropped on Jerry Lewis last night during the Critics Choice Movie Awards. Lewis has been quoted as saying at a 1998 comedy festival that seeing women tell jokes “sets me back a bit,” adding “I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies into the world.” So during Apatow’s acceptance speech for Bridesmaids‘ best comedy win last night, the producer said: “Jerry Lewis once said that he didn’t think women were funny. So I’d just like to say, with all respect, fuck you.” Apatow, known for broad, male-oriented movie comedies including The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad and Pineapple Express, said during today’s session that this is a “golden era for talented women in comedy.” Of his own male-oriented movies, he said: “I started with my own genitals, if you will,” but considers women as funny as men.

Exactly. And everyone I’ve known who’s ever worked with Lewis has story that speak to his assholery.
That said, Apatow probably shouldn’t have singled out Lewis here — the list of washed up geezers who used to say women couldn’t be funny is a long one, and it does seem a bit cheap to do it to someone as old, bloated, hobbled and confused as Lewis. Apatow could have made the same point by saying, “To all the old comedians who said broads ain’t funny…”

The difference between Apatow and Jerry Lewis is that Apatow won’t be remembered when he’s 85. Hell, he’ll be lucky if anyone remembers him 5 years from now. And god bless Jerry for all of his politically incorrect outbursts. People are so uptight these days.
I agree. Apatow is known now, but what kind of shelf life will his movies hold? He may or may not be famous when 85, but taking something that Lewis said, possibly in sarcasm, possibly just a joke that wasn’t funny, and fuck you-ing him over it more than a decade later is just classless. There’s such a thing as taking the high road, but Apatow doesn’t know what that is.

The only real signature of an Apatow comedy is the 2hr + running time and extra 20 minutes (for the UNRATED version!). Nothing like leaving 40 minutes in your movie that should have stayed on the cutting room floor.
Jerry’s from a different era – a little forgiveness is order, regardless of him raising Billions of dollars for MDA.

Apatow is spot on with his “it’s not about money” comment for a man who let “Get him to the Greek” of the ground. Throw more money at Mrs.Wiig and Mrs. Mumolo and the sequel will fly flawlessly.
First, Judd has only written/directed THREE films. So re his diminishing returns, Judd as a producer isn’t Judd as a director.

Exactly what I was thinking- he was acting like a whiney b*tch at some awards show last year (I wanna say the DGAs, but I could be wrong). Yes, Ricky ruffled a few overpaid, semi-talented feathers but it was obviously in jest, while Apatow’s ripping on Ricky just seemed like a child having a tantrum- he might as well have been screaming “I’m rubber and you’re glue!”

I’m a huge fan of judd apatow — knocked up was amazing and my favorite movie of that year — but I thought he was very disrespectful — i mean you don’t criticize the organization who gave you the award as being cheap and not providing food — there was just nothing thankful or grateful in his acceptance speech. It’s too bad.
