EXCLUSIVE: French helmer Olivier Dahan has signed on to direct the Arash Amel script Grace Of Monaco. Dahan, who directed Marion Cotillard to an Academy Award for La Vie En Rose, has been in on meetings that producer Pierre-Ange Le Pogam has taken as they figure out the right young actress who’ll play actress-turned-Monaco princess Grace Kelly. The producer is fully funding the $15 million project. Based on the acclaim that Michelle Williams has gotten for her Marilyn Monroe turn in My Week with Marilyn, Meryl Streep for Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady and the Oscar that Colin Firth won for playing King George VI in The King’s Speech last year, playing 20th century icons certainly has its appeal. And the script made the Black List.
The film covers a half-year period in 1962 when French leader Charles De Gaulle and Monaco’s Prince Rainier III were at odds over Monaco’s standing as a tax haven. France gave Monaco six months to reform its tax laws, and the situation escalated. By that time, Kelly (33 at the time) had given up her acting career to become a full-time princess, and the film details her political maneuvering behind the scenes to save Monaco. CAA reps Dahan. Now, who is the right actress to play Princess Grace?

Please Jessica Chastain, please not January Jones.
Will, I couldn’t agree more. Jessica Chastain has SERIOUS acting chops. I’d love to see her in this role.
Jessica Chastain
How to secure (and probably win) a Best Actress award. Here are your options:
1) be a pretty person who uglies it up for a role
2) play a hooker
3) play an actual person (Reese Witherspoon, Julia Roberts, etc, etc)
4) be British or have a British accent
An upper class Philadelphia accent from around 1950′s may be close enough to qualify for 4. 3 is a lock, plus Grace Kelly was an honest to goodness old school Hollywood star.
Charlize Theron
Rosamund Pike, please.
Agree with you 100%! Rosamund Pike for the role!
January Jones looks like the part, but I don’t think she’s got either talent or charisma to pull this. Jessica Chastain could do it, she’s gorgeous! Or Charlize Theron, though I think Theron is too much of a safe choice. I’d rather see Chastain.
Gillian Jacobs would be perfect
January Jones is not remotely as bad as people make her out to be, and she’s positively brilliant in the third season of MAD MEN as her marriage to Jon Hamm is breaking up. She holds her own and you believe her. She is a fine actress who just happens to need meaty and subtle material to do her best work. Much prefer her to Charlize or Jessica Chastain.
“January Jones is not remotely as bad as people make her out to be”
You’re right, she is worse.
Did ya see X Men First Class?
I agree that Jones is better than people give her credit for, but she has already said that she has no interest in playing Grace Kelly.
Charlize of course
Evan Rachel Wood has my vote.
Add my vote to Rosamund Pike. I think she’d be perfect.
Elizabeth Banks or Jessica Chastain. Both great actresses.
Chastain is on fire right now, deservedly so. And Banks looks like a dead ringer for Grace Kelly.
Can’t go wrong here.
I bet it goes to Michelle Williams.
Sofia Vergara. What. I like Sofia Vergara. She’ll be great. No one will even notice.
How about Charo? No one will notice.
Snort!
i agree with Jessica Chastain and Rosamund Pike.
Gwyneth Paltrow is the closest. Maybe Diane Kruger.
oh dear god no anyone but Paltrow…
So excited that a film about Grace Kelly is being made, I hope they do her justice, she is my favorite of all the classy leading ladies. I’d personally like to see Kirsten Dunst or Amber Heard play the part but it may also be a good direction to go with a new, lesser known actress.
Dunst doesn’t look much like Kelly to my eyes, but she’s on a creative high right now, and I bet she’d knock it out of the park.
January Jones, Rosamund Pike or Charlize Theron (maybe she’s too tall though?)
BRIT MARLING!!!!!
Sienna Miller or Charlize Theron!
short list:
melissa mccarthy
gabourey sidibe (if you can get her)
robert downey, jr.
chelsea handler – provided she does her own stunts
Diane Kruger…a no brainer. She’s not americain, but neither is Theron and she can do an americain accent. Plus, she speaks french !
Diane Kruger has the right look and has some chops that have yet to be explored imo. Saw some real potential from Inglorious Bastards.
Theron is a wee bit too old despite being amazing and still looking great, january jones is just plain horrible, Rosamund Pike is boring, Amber Heard is too young and sexually smoldering and doesn’t really have any deep acting chops, Michelle Williams just played Marilyn, Rachel McAdams feels a little too contemporary and cute rather than regal, although I always love her presence and subtlety. Just hope the studio/financiers lay off and let the director find the Right Grace Kelly because Dahan knows what he’s doing and will find the perfect fit of matching the iconography and more importantly inhabiting the part wholly along with bringing a similar quality of photogenie to the screen that Grace Kelly did.
1. Rosamund Pike
2. Keira Knightley
3. Jessica Chastain
4. Diane Krüger
5. Charlize Theron
Kelly had a mild sense of humor that would be difficult to capture. Maybe Michelle Williams. Most of the people mentioned are so relentlessly careerist that it shows through in their work. Might as well cast Beyonce if you want that. (By the way, it would be great to see race-neutral casting tried in the movies, but not her!)
As for the Oscars and their unreliably bad taste, Geoff, remember that Francis MacDormand (Fargo) beat out Kristin Scott Thomas (English Patient) for Best Actress. And don’t forget Marisa Tomei (vs. Judy Davis, Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave & Miranda Richardson, in some kind of American dream sequence). But generally you are right.
And as for Jan. Jones, see Swedish Auto. She obviously can’t play the smart Kelley, but she has a certain authenticity when given the chance.
Heck, just cast Marion Cotillard.
