Lionsgate and Wrekin Hill Entertainment will go for a VOD first release after acquiring the John Stockwell-directed Halle Berry-Olivier Martinez action thriller Dark Tide. Wrekin Hill acquired U.S. rights with Row 1 Productions. Lionsgate will release the film on VOD, electronic sell-through and packaged media. Wrekin Hill will do theatrical. The distribution plan leads off with a three-week Ultra VOD window on March 8th with a theatrical release on March 30th, culminating in a packaged media and Digital Download release. “The star power that Halle Berry brings to Dark Tide paired with a genre that hits VOD audiences make it a perfect addition to our Ultra VOD strategy.” said Jim Packer, Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television and Digital Distribution.
The film was written by Amy Sorlie and Ronnie Christensen and based on a story by Sorlie, and was produced by Jeanette Buerling and Matthew Chausse. Berry plays a shark expert whose business has been failing since a shark attack killed a fellow diver under her command. Once dubbed “the shark whisperer,” Kate is haunted by the memory of the attack and unable to get back into the water. With bills piling up her old boyfriend (Martinez) presents her with a lucrative opportunity: lead a thrill-seeking millionaire businessman on a dangerous shark dive … outside the cage. Battling her self-doubts and fear, Kate accepts the proposal — and sets a course for the world’s deadliest feeding ground: Shark Alley.
The Dark Tide deal was negotiated by Stuart Ford and Jonathan Deckter of IM Global.

Oh man… How the mighty have fallen. I love Halle Berry. She’s a great actress and one of the most beautiful women on the planet.
However, after reading the summary… “shark expert”, “a shark expert whose business has been failing since a shark attack killed a fellow diver under her command”
I literally want to hide under the covers in embarassment.
Wow, this DOES sound absurd. Of course that might explain why it’s going right to DVD!
Didn’t her last movie disappear before even opening as well? It was Frankie and Alice or something like that? What is going on with Ms. Berry? Why isn’t she being offered good roles?
There’s a number of reasons for her lack of quality roles:
1) She’s a 45 year old woman of color. It’s hard enough for older actresses to find quality roles (unless you’re Meryl Streep), and even harder for black actresses.
2) She had a child and took 3 years out. Any career momentum was lost.
She’s got Cloud Atlas coming out in October which could give her career a boost. That’s with Tom Hanks and The Wachowski’s.
A lot of words to announce that Halle Berry’s shark movie is going straight-to-DVD.
Well, it does say there’ll be a theatrical release on March 30th, so it’ll at least have a small window to gauge its performance. Simply getting a movie made these days is quite a feat. Besides, VOD is the wave of the future, my friend.
From what I understand, it didn’t cost much, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Dark Tide turns a small profit.
Bad idea to fire your director a week from the start of principal photography. Bad idea to have an awful script. Bad idea to hire a new director who was cashing a check. Bad idea to make this picture. Do the investors behind Jeanette and Maggie ask for an explanation after losing them $.
I like Halle Berry.. But.. Her star power? I don’t know What you’re talking about!
She’s pretty and, as Monster’s Ball demonstrates, with the right material, talented. But she must have some of the worst creative help in the industry. Yes parts for women (especially those of a certain age) are hard to get, but is there nothing she can star in to demonstrate something other than her boobs?
Forget Halle Berry.
I can’t believe somebody gave John Stockwell money to make another movie.
Bomb after bomb, and still gets jobs?
She’s got a really bad rep too. No matter how pretty you are, when people don’t like you/ you treat them poorly, it catches up…
