Maggie Gyllenhaal, Bruce Norris, Greta Gerwig and Rhys Ifans are in negotiations to join HBO’s drama pilot The Corrections. In the Noah Baumbach/Scott Rudin project, the four would join previously cast Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest and Ewan McGregor. Based on Jonathan Franzen’s acclaimed book, The Corrections revolves around the troubles of a Midwestern couple (Cooper and Wiest) and their three adult children as they trace their lives from the mid-20th century to “one last Christmas” together near the turn of the millennium. In her first-ever series gig, Oscar-nominated Gyllenhaal
would play the youngest sibling, beautiful chef Denise. McGregor plays Chip, the middle child, a journalist and intellectual wannabe screenwriter who works for a Lithuanian crime boss (Ifans) defrauding American investors. Playwright-actor Norris would play the older brother, a successful but depressed banker with a drinking problem. Gerwig, star of Baumbach’s most recent feature Greenberg, would play Chip’s soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend, who works for a film production company. Baumbach and Franzen co-wrote the adaptation, with Baumbach set to direct the pilot. The two are executive producing with Rudin.

Sounds like a huge dud of a show ratings wise like Luck will be and Treme currently is. Does HBO just figure that because they have a few hit dramas like Game of Thrones and True Blood that get a lot of buzz they can just make the rest of their drama lineup shows that no one wants to watch.
I’m sure Jennifer Jason Leigh is thrilled that Noah is still um… hiring Greta Gerwig.
I dunno, James, sounds like something I’d want to watch. Good story, great actors. I’m all in.
Hard to tell if The Corrections will be watchable or not without it not having been made yet (and without the ESP that you seem to possess). I didn’t think I’d like game Of Thrones and now think it’s the best thing on. What is a show that “sounds watchable” to you? Let me guess: a misunderstood TV genius in a North Hollywood condo surrounded by rejected specs and neglected cats?
Other reports are also indicating that if HBO likes the 2-hour pilot, the show will be commissioned as four, 10-episode long seasons. So I guess they have the arc figured out.
The Corrections is an immense, incredible book with LOTS of internal drama. Don’t know if any vid adaptation can do it justice, but mini series is best way to go. So hope it won’t suck…
