EXCLUSIVE: Kimberly Peirce is in talks to direct Carrie, the remake of the Stephen King thriller about the telekinetic teenager who gets pushed too far at the prom and wreaks havoc on her fellow high school students. Peirce is best known for helming another troubled female coming-of-age tragedy, the Hilary Swank-starrer Boys Don’t Cry. Carrie was previously turned into the 1976 film that starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta and Amy Irving, with Piper Laurie as the repressive mother. The script has been written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, whose rewrite work helped save Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark on Broadway. Aguirre-Sacasa set out to write a version of Carrie that is more faithful to the King book, and more grounded than the Brian De Palma-directed film. That kind of grounded material is something Peirce does well. She last directed Stop-Loss and is repped at CAA.

I would love to see Sissy Spacek in the role of the mother. She was amazing as Carrie, I think she could pull off the role of the mother….Please!!!!!
Ok, I guess. But why Kimberly? What is it about her that says she should be the one to remake this?
And who is PAYING FOR IT? In talks?
Another Carrie remake? How about some new ideas?
This is Hollywood. They’ve proven time and time again — especially in 2011 — that they are simply incompetent at creating an original product. It’s all remakes (of American and foreign pictures), sequels, prequels, comic book films, spoof movies, adaptations of TV shows or video games, etc. Hollywood is a joke and it is amazing why those idiots wonder why box office revenues are down. They keep churning out the same old crap. Who the hell wants to see a Carrie remake? Stupid!
I know this has been said before, hollyweird , please stop with the remakes. My Goodness !
I think some remakes would be amazing. Especially if its a King book. I’d love to see IT and The Stand with a more modern cast. However i do see where everyone else is coming from. Most people dont like my opinion about wanting a Goonies, and Wizard of Oz remake.
When will a movie adaptation of the Gunslinger:Dark Tower ever occur? I mean come on. It’s some of King’s best stuff!
I’m pretty sure they’re working on it.
I think that the Dark Tower series is by far Sai King’s best work. Those are my seven (soon to be eight) favorite books in the entire world. I believe they should be made into 8-10 films. They should not be made into a television series. I would be willing to wait many years to see them done correctly. There are rumors that they will be made into several films, with a television series to fill in the blanks between the films. Don’t know if it will ever be done, but I will wait patiently.
Even the tailisman would be a great movie….i mean come on all the great books but there is no movie…..wake up
There is so much to life by not being a jerk. Anyhow, I think that a remake is a good idea, especially if they can actually stick to the story and perhaps go into a little history of Carrie’s biological father. Now THAT would be interesting.
paycheck for pearce. another bad remake/box office single for screen gems. yay.
While I don’t think Carrie should be remade, Kim Pierce would bring something fresh I think. In which case, it would be interesting to see Spacek play the mother. Big concern I would have if I were Sissy though is that this might be her most famous signature role (among many other major roles), and the one she will remain famous for throughout all of film history. So not sure it would be a great idea to tinker with this. Risks coming off as a gimmick. However, given that Sissy is criminally underused these days in features, lets get this icon some decent work on the big screen please and thank you.
Sounds like another mistake of hiring the wrong director for a genre film. When a woman director is good at dramas and such, what they hell are they thinking for a horror movie? Or maybe they want to make it a boring drama. Do these people really think they are doing the right thing?
Figgs
women are only good for directing dramas? could you be anymore ass backwards? there’s hardly enough working female directors to even make such a generalized statement.
Uh, because Carrie is not horror, and if you’ve actually read the book or seen the movie, you know that the story is all psychological and dramatic. Yes, DRAMA. The ending is the only typical “horror”, and it is actually story-driven, unlike most of the crap out there. I don’t think that it should be remade, but I completely disagree with your statements.
Actually they are doing a remake of It and Ron Howard is working on the Dark Tower series which I have heard is supposed to be a combination of feature films and television series’ between films. I really can’t wait for that. And although I am also a little tired of Hollywood remakes, I love it when someone takes on the task of remaking Stephen King movies in an effort to modernize and make them more accurate according to the original books. And yes it would be awesome to bring Sissy Spacek back as Mrs. White!
PLEASE do not do this – do not remake CARRIE – you only alienate the core audience that are fans of the original and the title won’t mean much or anything to teens who don’t know about the novel and the DePalma film. Maybe invest in a new, original well written horror script. Yes, I know, what a crazy thought.
This is technically the THIRD remake. Back in the 90s there was “The Rage: Carrie 2″, which while technically a sequel, it mostly replayed the events of the first. And then there was a Made-for-TV remake produced by MGM back in the Mid 00′s.
Technically nothing. That was not a remake and this would only be the second one
Angela Bettis and Patricia Clarkson would beg to differ. Look it up. Carrie. 2002.
“The Rage” doesn’t even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence. Yuck.
In my opinion the in german called der dunkle turm should become a movie. I thonk this saga is the best thing stephen king ever did
Bin fast ganz Deiner Meinung, Chris.
“More grounded”? The DePalma CARRIE was completely grounded. For at least an hour it operates as a purely psychological thriller. And Spacek’s performance was painfully realistic. Another utterly unnecessary remake.
they already remade it once–at NBC.
Roberto saved the “Spider Man” musical and works on “Glee”….why not film “Carrie: The Musical” instead? The new version opens next month…
I saw a remake of carrie and it was rubbish the original was better why can’t they make new stephen king films there’s plently of good books that have yet to make into films
agree
In fact, this is *such* a timely remake given how many youth suicides have taken place in this country recently due to bullying. The de Palma movie is brilliant, but it is a particular take on the book, and the book simply has more to offer. I do not think it was, and can be exhausted with one take. The same way “drama” may not exhaust a great director’s range and talents.
Why? The original is fine the way it is.
yes it is
Remember when Gus Van Sant remade Psycho?
That turned out well.
hahahaha agreed
Who would play Carrie?
“Carrie” is a classic movie. Why does Hollywood keep remaking movies that were fine to begin with? This will probably a failure like all the other unnecessary remakes of classic movies. And the original “Carrie” had some of the greatest music ever (such as, when Carrie pulls Mrs. White into the closet as the house collapses).
I foolishly believed a new year might mean the endless stream of remakes was over.
Anything by Stephen King will be watched by me, old or new!! A remake of Cujo shouldn’t be out of the picture, nor should Pet Semetary,BOTH I think would be classics to be remade, I’d be no. 1 in line. As for the idea of Sissy Spacek playing Mrs.White seems to be unanimous with most of us fans, ,,,,,just saying
I think they should make ‘The Talisman’ into a movie. I think the graphics would have to be awesome. Maybe 3D worthy. Every time I think I have all of Kings books, he writes another best seller. Love them all!
Carrie is not a horror movie, it is a character-driven psychological drama
YES! Thank you, it seems all people remember is the ending. Both the book and movie are far from “horror.” This miconception has always plagued reception toward King, IMO.
Kim, just get out there and direct something! I don’t know jack about Carrie, never saw it, but in your hands it will be good I’m sure. What I’m also sure about is that you need to get back behind the camera and just jam it, girl. We don’t want to wait any longer. Get busy on something, get off the sidelines of developing and rewriting and whatever else you are up to and go make a movie. Really, just go for it.
