Here’s MPAA CEO Chris Dodd’s response to Sen. Harry Reid’s decision this morning to postpone the vote planned for next week on the Protect IP Act:
“We applaud those leaders in Washington who have chosen to stand with the millions of hard working Americans all across this nation whose livelihoods are threatened by foreign criminal websites designed to steal. As a consequence of failing to act, there will continue to be a safe haven for foreign thieves; American jobs will continue to be lost; and consumers will continue to be exposed to fraudulent and dangerous products peddled by foreign criminals.
With today’s announcement, we hope the dynamics of the conversation can change and become a sincere discussion about how best to protect the millions of American jobs affected by the theft of American intellectual property. The threat posed by these criminal operations has been widely acknowledged by even the most ardent critics. It is incumbent that they now sincerely work with all of us to achieve a meaningful solution to this critically important goal.”

“fraudulent and dangerous products peddled” Oh lawd…
Obviously, Dodd’s talking about “dangerous products” like… every Nic Cage movie made in the last 5 years.
Clearly Dodd totally bungled the bills, their timing and positioning with the public.
The MPAA talking about piracy, is like the Mafia talking about respect for law and order.
The studios and their super-agent cohorts, are the real pirates.
Whether its stealing stories and ideas to stealing the profits that rightfully belong to profit participants, the MPAA has always been a criminal front. Valenti was a fixer for LBJ, so he was well qualified for the job… and now Chris Dodd -I rest my case!
Can anyone tell me why Hollywood hasn’t offered a cheap digital distribution network that is drm free to combat piracy instead of trying to legislate around the problem?
“It is incumbent that they now sincerely work with all of us”
Gee, Dodd, why didn’t you contact then and have them help you write the bill instead of ignoring them?
What Dodd’s clearing saying is, “We got caught, now we need time to see if we can put the proper spin on this thing. We refuse to make better movies, so we’ll blame the handful of internet pirates who weren’t even going to buy our crappy movies to begin with!”
Can somebody tell me how much revenue internet piracy took from Avatar? Gee, they might have made 3 billion instead of two. It’s that kind of obsessive greedy neuroses from old scumbags like Murdoch that drives crap like PIPA/SOPA.
Copyrighted material does not trump our civil rights.
We can’t allow people to download Bucky Larson illegally, movie executes might have to cut down on the hookers and cocaine.
Gotta love Hollywood and Dodd. In the real world, not one of political cronyism and special perks, the ex Senator would not be a spokesman, but would be sitting in jail for his self enrichment and special favors granted at the expense of the American people.
I’m not paying for movies! That’s so 1998. Movies are free now! And will always be free! Yes! Suck it Hollywood! Soon you will be out of business! And then there will be no more movies! And then, oh crap, wait a minute. I like movies. Maybe I didn’t think this through…
Look – it’s the frequently seen strawman, bane of actual logic and reason!
Chris Dodd, the criminal behind the housing collapse? What a toothless liar. Good job MPAA hiring someone with zero credibility to win a PR battle. He may get on his knees for Harry Reid and Obama, but he can’t fool the rest of the country.
I’ll never trust anything thats proposed by the MPAA and the record industry.
Dodd is another OLD political hack. He lost. They got the wrong man for the job. Who cares about watching a lot of third rate movies from Hollywood. It is nothing but a reflection of our dying culture. Go internet… the people told the MPAA to SHOVE IT!
The movie studios and record companies are losing their control and they don’t like it. Even if SOPA and PIPA become law, it won’t help. New distribution channels will open and indies will prevail in the long run. Hollywood will still produce the blockbusters the indies can’t afford to produce and some of the movie houses will survive because people like to see productions in ideal environments.
Dodd should retire. He’s done enough damage to our country. He should spend his declining years in that house with the great mortgage deal in Ireland (or wherever) and STFU.
I have no idea what he just said out of both sides of his mouth.
