MSNBC continues to beef up its weekend lineup: The show with Harris-Perry — a Tulane University political science professor and frequent guest on MSNBC — will run Saturday and Sunday from 10-noon ET beginning February 4. Her program, which doesn’t have a name yet, will follow Up with Christopher Hayes and Weekends With Alex Witt. Harris-Perry tweets that she’ll continue to live and teach in New Orleans. Here’s the release:
NEW YORK—January 4, 2012—MSNBC contributor Melissa Harris-Perry is the latest addition to MSNBC’s expanding weekend lineup. Her new program, set to air Saturdays and Sundays 10a-noon ET, will debut on MSNBC February 4th. The announcement was made by MSNBC President Phil Griffin. Chris Hayes will continue to lead off MSNBC’s weekend programming with his popular roundtable program ‘Up,’ which will begin airing from 8-10am ET on both Saturdays and Sundays. MSNBC anchor Alex Witt will expand MSNBC’s live news coverage in both the morning and the afternoon, with “Weekends with Alex Witt” airing 7-8a ET Saturdays and noon-2p ET on Saturdays and Sundays.
Harris-Perry, a long-standing political analyst and contributor to MSNBC, is a frequent guest of “PoliticsNation” with Rev. Al Sharpton, and also serves as occasional host of “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “The Last Word.” A highly accomplished author, scholar and speaker, Harris-Perry’s new program will continue MSNBC’s trend of bringing intelligent, informed voices to the cable channel’s weekend programming.
“Melissa’s thoughtful analysis has been an incredible addition to our primetime programs and I’m thrilled to have her join our expanded weekend line-up,” said Griffin. “Alex Witt has led our weekend programming for many years and will continue to be our chief weekend news anchor, kicking-off and wrapping up our live coverage each day. Weekend mornings are a time when our audience wants intelligent political conversation, as the success of Chris Hayes has shown, in addition to coverage of all the headlines. As the political year gets underway, there’s no better time to build up our weekend coverage, which Alex has helmed so well for years.”
“This is an extraordinary opportunity,” said Harris-Perry. “All I’ve ever wanted to be is a teacher. Phil Griffin and MSNBC are giving me the chance to have a much bigger classroom. I’m particularly excited to join the growing weekend lineup where we have a chance to take a longer and broader view of the week’s political news.”
In addition to her role at MSNBC, Melissa Harris-Perry is also columnist for The Nation magazine, and will continue to write her monthly column, titled Sister Citizen. Harris-Perry is also a Professor of Political Science at Tulane University, where she will continue to teach, and is the Founding Director of the Anna Julia Cooper Project on Gender, Race, and Politics in the South, housed at the university’s Newcomb College Institute. A celebrated author, Harris-Perry recently published her second book, Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America (Yale 2011), which examines the effects of persistent harmful stereotypes on black women’s politics. Her first book, Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought, won the 2005 W. E. B. Du Bois Book Award and 2005 Best Book Award from the Race and Ethnic Politics Section of the American Political Science Association.
In 2009, Harris-Perry became the youngest scholar to deliver the W.E.B. Du Bois Lectures at Harvard University, as well as the youngest woman ever to deliver the prestigious Ware Lecture. Harris-Perry received her B.A. in English from Wake Forest University, her Ph.D. in political science from Duke University and an honorary doctorate from Meadville Lombard Theological School.Additional information about Harris-Perry’s new program will be released closer to its launch on February 4th.

Love the fact that an African-american is getting a show, but do they constantly have to be shoved on the weekends? I mean, really…
You mean with the other African Americans like Chris Hayes?
WTF are you talking about? Al Sharpton has a show on MSNBC weekdays at 6PM.
First I’d like to say I am glad to see her get a show. That does explain why she has been appearing a lot more often, like at the Iowa Causcus show this past Tuesday. Chris Hayes appeared a lot too prior to his show, Rev Sharpton appeared a lot filling in during the 6pm show after the host left, they gave him his show. MSNBC sucks on the weekend unless you want to watch lockup. I think MSNBC needs weekend shows, the news does not only happen monday thru friday.
Good. I love her. She’s thoughtful, insightful, warm, and refreshing. And yes, I’ll admit, I have a bit of a news-crush on her as well.
Now MSNBC…just dump Al Sharpton and replace him with ANYBODY else and we’re all set.
Al Sharpton cracks me up and his show has some clever segments. This chick, however, is unwatchable. She’s extremely stiff, rehearsed and feels so unnatural. Also, her lisp drives me nuts.
LOVE HER! She’s Super Smart! She shined as a contributor on the Maddow Show.
Now give that hottie Ezra Klein a show!
My thoughts EXACTLY! Love Melissa! And Ezra is dreamy!
But if MSNBC keeps it up, I’ll have no time to do anything but watch MSNBC!
Now maybe they will strike the World Book Encyclopedia from the bookcase on her set. Kind of undercuts the gravitas.
Why didn’t NBC buy Huffington? Seems like they cant create a show without a huffpost blogger!
Brilliant in the classroom no doubt, but she’s not cut out for television. Bad choice.
Not cut out for television? Oh, I SO disagree. Her appearances on the Maddow show (and others) are always interesting and insightful, plus her on-air demeanor – which I agree was a bit rough at first – has just gotten steadily better. I have never minded her lisp, but even that has abated noticeably; I think she must have consulted with some kind of speaking coach. And anyway, let me repeat the stuff about how she’s interesting and insightful, and add “brilliant” into the mix.
MSNBC on the weekend – we’re talking 50,000 to 75,000 viewers for a typical show at best. As for Sharpton, his show is flat out awful.
Agree with Seanocali on this one.
She’s smart and very talented, but she has a lisp/speech impediment that is exaggerated by microphones. It’s very distracting.
Glad she’s getting a show and I hate to be so superficial but can we please bolt a decent weave onto her head? She looks like one of the Talosians from “The Cage”.
