EXCLUSIVE: Discovery Channel has greenlighted Unchained Reaction, a new series executive produced by Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, hosts/executive producers of the channel’s Emmy-nominated Mythbusters. The duo also serve as judges on the six-part series, which pits two teams of varying backgrounds — artists, rocket scientists, animatronic specialists, engineers and even your average Joes — against each other to build an elaborate chain reaction contraption on a massive scale. The teams are provided with identical sets of tools and materials and given five days to complete a series of mechanisms based on a specific theme. Per the network, “refined mechanical movements, pyrotechnics and large-scale destruction are encouraged.” At the end of the the five days, Savage and Hyneman are joined by a new guest judge to review the installations and pick a winner. “We wanted to craft a show that puts the process of problem solving and ingenuity front and center, and we’ve done exactly that with Unchained Reaction,” Savage said. Added Hyneman, “The innovative solutions and boundless energy demonstrated by the contestants surprised us every single time.” Unchained Reaction, produced by Discovery Studios and Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun’s BermanBraun, is set to premiere in March, with Savage and Hyneman executive producing. “The spirit of Unchained Reaction is at the intersection of art and engineering, and Adam and Jamie are the masters at celebrating teamwork and gee-whiz wonder at how the world works,” said Eileen O’Neill, Group President, Discovery Channel and TLC.

Sounds like a rip-off of DESTROY BUILD DESTROY on Cartoon Network, in some ways.
How?
which was a rip off of junkyard wars
actually sounds like junkyard wars to me.
destroy build destroy is a stupid show.
I liked this show better when it was called Junkyard Wars.
Sweeeet!
Sounds pretty cool. I like that its only a mini series, and I think it should stay that way.
Sounds like a Rube Goldberg version of Junkyard Wars. Should be cool!
can’t wait!
Reminds me of “Junkyard Wars.”
As if Rube Goldberg machines are something new.
exactly what I was thinking. I liked how they called it “an elaborate chain reaction contraption” instead of the smarter and simpler “Rube Goldberg”. The first one sounds smarter and more complicated, but the second one is ACTUALLY smarter. Oh well, I’m still looking forward to it…as much as these guys oversell their intelligence they’re actually kind of funny.
How exactly do they oversell how smart they are?
They commonly do things the wrong way, interrogate what they did wrong and try again.
Hell their motto is failure is always an option.
Please I’d love to know what you are basing this off of.
I’m with you, Albert. The MythBusters’ OTHER motto is, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.” I enjoy the way they examine and test out a myth from every conceivable angle before declaring it “busted,” “confirmed,” or “plausible.” Sometimes, in the interest of fairness, they’ll even revisit a myth, as, for example, they revisited the Archimedes’ Ray at the request of the President.
At any rate, I’m looking forward to the new show. Anything Adam and Jamie are involved with is sure to be fun to watch.
They can’t call it a Rube Goldberg contraption in a press release without paying money to Rube Goldberg Inc.
“Rube Goldberg” is copyrighted and im betting discovery couldnt get the rights to use the name.
I think “an elaborate chain reaction contraption” is the Rube Goldberg way to say “Rube Goldberg”.
HA! This made me laugh. Completely true
Sounds very much like the great egg race from the BBC in the 70s. Should be cracking
Junkyard wars! (round 2)
Sounds like a good show guy’s. You know who would make an INTERESTING “Rocket Scientest Guest” would be Thad Roberts, you should google him, he would excell at this and he’s one of the keenest minds on the planet. Just a thought, and he has a colorful past as well!
Which is a rip-off of junkyard wars, but there aren’t new idea’s anymore just new ways to do em. But discovery is a much better fit than cartoon network for this kind of show.
Actually it sounds a lot like the old Scrapheap Challenge / Junkyard Wars, only more explosive. As long as Discovery doesn’t do too much of the fake drama crap they are so fond of, it should be a fun watch. Hopefully Adam and Jamie have enough creative control to keep the focus on the cool machines and good teamwork.
To get all Zeitgeist here, I’m feeling sort of a groundswell towards to the idea of a limited run, i.e. series of a limited duration. The audience knows that a) they most interesting stuff always occurs at the beginning, b) they better catch while they can, and c) they aren’t going to get jerked around for years of rehashed worn-out story lines.
This works for comedies and dramatic plots as well as reality shows.
The audience wants an arc, and a limited run guarantees that. It’s refreshing.
(too bad I couldn’t work in “leitmotif” and “schadenfreude”)
(or did I?)
1) Jamie and.Adam can do whatever they want cause they’re awesome
2) nobody cares about destroy build destroy, it sucked
If they’re so awesome, why are they blatantly ripping off Junkyard Wars?
How do I get on a team?
That’s what I just said to my husband. “I’m going to say it’s Rube Goldberg on steroids.”
Sounds interesting – letting people show their creativity making Rube G’s. The “fixed set of material” makes it more interesting.
Mini-series sounds right – it would likely become less interesting the longer it goes.
Your an idiot…lol sounds entertaining. Who watches cartoon network nemore..loser
@ bassbar That’s what I was thinking. Egg race + scrapheap challenge = unchained reaction. That said will be looking forward to it will be a great show no doubt.
Which itself was a ripoff of scrapheap challenge
How are Rube Goldberg machines anything like Junkyard Wars?
Its not a rip off of any thing. On both “destroy buid destroy” and “junkyard wars” they bult machines to put head to head in competition. But with this amazing ang ingenious idea, the contestents are build ruge-golberg machiens, as done for a christmas episode by adam and jamie, and are being judge on ingenuity and creative ness and difficulty of the project. I am a huge fan of “mythbusters” and if adam and jamie are putting their necks on the line for something else, I’m sure it will match their standards and maybe even surpase your simple minded ideas of entertainment. Just wach the show before you critisize their work!
American idol meets Rube Goldberg.
1. Sounds interesting and might have to look into it when it comes in March.
2. Does this mean no more Mythbusters?? If it does, then I probably won’t enjoy it as much…
The Mythbusters will continue as normal, with a new season starting in the Spring
Will it be better than the dreary moonshining show, or the feral hog show, or the “let’s
rebuild the same chopper over and over” show? More interesting than the “let’s scrape
rocks off the highway show” or ANY of the police shows?
I’d rather see a show about movie model shops—building sets that will be destroyed
by giant monsters…. and after One season, that’s it. All of the usual cloying shows, and
that now includes MYTHBUSTERS, need to know when to stop. Blow it up real good.
