Ricky Gervais: “I’m Really Done This Time” Hosting The Golden Globes; Nikki Finke: Why Ricky Gervais Stunk
If it was up to NBC alone, the network would probably have Ricky Gervais host the Golden Globes again next year. Speaking at NBC Universal’s afterparty, Paul Telegdy, NBC’s president of alternative and late night, who oversees the Golden Globes, gave Gervais thumbs-up for his hosting duties tonight. “I think he scored,” Telegdy said. “It’s an incredibly bold and brave thing to take on a hosting job and do it for three consecutive years while facing such level of scrutiny. He came out, he was himself, he had a great time and he was backed by the biggest stars. I laughed heartily throughout.”
Telegdy dismissed suggestions that Gervais was tamer in his jabs at Hollywood heavyweights this year compared to his controversial hosting gig last year. “I believe people were prepared after last year, but I would say that he was as disruptive and intrusive this year. I can’t see how he could have been more outrageous.” As for the content of Gervais’ bits, Telegdy said that he only knew the broad themes, with Gervais keeping his material to himself until showtime. Telegdy said he was not aware of any conditions made to Gervais in terms of limitations to what he could say onstage though there was “common courtesy” implied. “When you get invited to someone’s house, you pay attention to who the owner is and don’t scribble graffiti on the wall,” Telegdy said, adding that there have been “no qualms” over Gervais’ performance.
Regarding Gervais’ comments to Deadline after the show that he is “really done” hosting the Golden Globes after 3 times, Telegdy stressed that it is Gervais’ decision to make (if HFPA invites him) but added, “We would welcome him back. He is a gentleman and a scholar, I was greatly impressed by him as a host and have totally enjoyed working with him. I’m also a great believer that the only word that should be unspoken in the entertainment business is ‘never’.”

Not that I’d expect an NBC exec to say anything different than he did, but that dog from “The Artist” would get better ratings hosting than a fourth year of Ricky would, after tonight. (And I like Ricky.)
They would have been pleased with a sock puppet, which is essentially what Ricky was this year anyway. Sock puppet would have done the gig for less, too.
Everyone is right – what is Paul Telegdy going to say besides something glowing about the show. But the reality is that it was awful. It was boring and overall a joke.
The appropriate declension is “stank”.
I love Ricky. I felt he didn’t pick too many single targets that were at the awards, unless he had a connection to them. He seemed to skewer the group at large. More generalized attacks
continued: I missed him targeting specific people. That is what made it so enjoyable in 2012. Personal attacks
Teledgy is an idiot. The GG were a total bore. Nothing compared to Ricky’s prior two performances.
Teledgy wouldn’t know good entertainment from dead air. He has no humor, no creative skills, nothing whatsoever. Maybe it’s cultural, but his idea of good TV in the USA is anything that sticks on the screen.
Ricky shouldn’t have done GG #3. It was nowhere close to the biting fun of his last two performances.
I personally find it hilarious so many comments on similar stories have expressed disappointment about Gervais not being meaner. What’s wrong with you people? If you hate celebrities that much, and hollywood in general, how weird is it to spend an ounce of your time on any of it? Even if you claim it’s just to make fun of it. Pathetic. Go do something positive you like to do. The Globes *were* boring, but no host can make up for the lack of excitement surrounding these films. It’s not that they were bad, I just don’t see a lot of passion behind them like we’ve had with LOTR or Avatar or Brokeback etc… Ricky had some good classic Gervais moments. He returned to some of the self-deprecation many of his fans love about him. He took some playful jabs but didn’t try and humiliate people. Sorry it wasn’t adequate for the sad, sorry viewer who delights in putting down the people they are jealous of and resentful of in life. The marketing should never have been about turning it into some kind of glorified roast in the first place.
Well said.
I could not agree with you more cookmeyer1970 – however, I have to ad…
By and large, I have never taken to Ricky Gervais. I have always found him to be blown up to super-human status way beyond his talents, which often, lacks finesse. Being funny does not come naturally to this guy. Everything has to be scripted – otherwise, he’s well and truly out of his comfort zone and sinks pathetically into the floorboards. So, don’t expect any quick, off the cuff quips from him.
But, the fact that people only pay him glowing tributes when his barbs are below the belt, unfairly cruel and indecently ungentlemanly (certainly no cricket player there) is really quite telling. In fact, I have to give Gervais some credit where credit is due because some of his material last evening was rather clever and indeed often self deprecating – something I haven’t seen from him in a very long time. Yet, this didn’t seem to bode at all well for many out there.
Like Cookmeyer said. Are the public so sadistically voyeuristic these days that the only time they take pleasure in anything, is when someone is pulled down to size. An Australian Tall Poppy Syndrome equivalent? Because the closest any of these armchair entertainment critiques are going to get to these celebs is by enviously putting the ammunition in the gun and getting someone like Gervais to fire it. And, always at the MORE talented, MUCH richer, BETTER looking, EVER SO lucky person that so happens, not to be them. It is the ‘Have-nots’ and ‘Would-bes-if-they-could-bes’ green-eyed chance to throw the rotten vege and watch it stick. A rather sad indictment of a dumbed down society who has to find fault, who has to insult and ridicule, who has to throw stones, cause its a hell of a lot easier than getting out there and giving life a go themselves!
In a way, it was this mentality that brought about the French Revolution, because there was only two classes then – the aristocracy and the poor. In today’s particular case, again, two very different classes, the viewing audience and those that they enviously depend upon for their escapism highs and lows, in drama and comedy.
So, I guess one could say, to be a couch potato and criticise is terribly safe, but decidedly gutless. And they are saying that Gervais didn’t have any balls!
It’s not about making a roast… it’s about having a sharp POV and delivering on the funny or buzz worthy. This may include making fun of people, which is fair game, or it could include other types of humor. But last night’s was all heard-it-before, and not particularly fresh or surprising.
Producing a good awards show has nothing to do with the movies/shows being featured.
It’s about the writing, the host, the vision, the direction.
The GG were a bore last night because it paled to the surprisingly entertaining last few broadcasts, which in themselves were an anomaly.
You can have great movies nominated… and still produce a lousy awards show. And you can have poor films… and still a fun two hours.
It’s called “producing.”
Wasnt it NBC who forced the golden globes to bring back Ricky?
Well, I think Ricky committed the worst sin. He was boring. Also the GGs seem to have cut back on the liquor. There were no drunken acceptance speeches, which has been what made it interesting in the past. There were a few “moments” here and there, but on the whole a rather boring telecast.
Sending get well wishes to Ricky Gervais after his castration. Maybe he’ll win a couple of Golden Globes one day to replace the pair he lost last night.
Telegy is full of shit!Always is… Gervais was sadly boring. You set us up because of his biting humor from the last awards…then go for it!Why let us down/ That’s what everyone wanted…it went nowhere! I don’t mean be mean…I mean lets make fun of everyone but with the best intentions…Actually, thank you modanna…the only laugh of the night.
The only way the show could have been duller & less funny is if it was written by Bruce Vilanch and Jon Macks.
I did turn to my wife and say, I can’t believe the gg’s hired that fat dude who writes for the oscars. This must be his rubbish I am hearing.
The very best comment I have read anywhere about this snoozefest! Thank you.
I think Carl Pilkington should host next year, being told what to say by Ricky from backstage.
