EXCLUSIVE: NBC is in negotiations to acquire upcoming Canadian medical drama series Saving Hope starring Erica Durance, Michael Shanks and Daniel Gillies for a summer run. Co-created and written by Malcolm MacRury and Morwyn Brebner, Saving Hope was inspired by a series of 2005 articles by Globe and Mail writer Ian Brown who spent eight weeks in Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital. It is described as a sexy, fast-paced drama set in a fictional Toronto hospital
that follows the lives of the doctors and staff and the complicated decisions they make trying to save lives. Saving Hope, produced and distributed by Entertainment One, stars Michael Shanks (Stargate SG-1) as Dr. Harris, chief surgeon who lies in a coma and wanders the wards in spirit form, Erica Durance (Smallville) as his fiancee and fellow surgeon, and Daniel Gillies (The Vampire Diaries) is a hot new surgeon. The premise is somewhat reminiscent of CBS’ supernatural medical drama A Gifted Man. Saving Hope, which has a 13-episode order from CTV, is executive produced by Ilana Frank who is behind another Canadian drama that has done well in the US, ABC’s Rookie Blue. Production is slated to begin in March. Saving Hope is one of 2 new Canadian drama series that are close to deals for summer runs in the U.S. The CW is finalizing a pact for soap The L.A. Complex. So far, NBC has not gotten a lot of traction with Canadian imports. The Listener, which launched on the network in June 2009, was pulled after 9 episodes. eOne is already in business with NBC. It produces the network’s midseason series The Firm.

This is exciting news, and hopefully, NBC will pick it up.
grounbreaking
Ahem. The Killing.
Care to elaborate?
Fresh. I haven’t seen anything like this since last night’s shows.
nbc should have just kept ‘mercy’ on the air if they were going to go this route. i thought this network was confusing before, but the last month or so have completely just blown my mind.
Exactly. it’s the same show only they think they are stealing someone else’s glory. Typical and it probably won’t work Canadian shows have a coldness that we never like.
Arrrgh, NBC, I was counting on ABC picking it up. Will have to start praying for Saving Hope. But, no matter how long it lasts, we can enjoy an Erica Durance and Michael Shanks onscreen reunion.
I’m so happy that Erica has a new show. I wanted ABC to pick it up as well. I’m praying that it has longevity on that network.
I loved Michael Shanks’ run on SMALLVILLE. He had great, warm rapport with Erica in their scenes together. I think that bodes well for this new show, and may have been why they were cast together.
I love Erica Durance and Michael Shanks together. She also guess starred on SG1. I am glad they both have a series again. I did notice thay said Michael Shanks name was Daniel Shanks, I gues they are thinking about his ironic character Dr. Daniel Jackson
Cop shows, law shows, hospital shows… The TV trinity.
So stoked for Erica Durance!!! I absolutely adore her (in a completely non-sexual, girl-crush way) and can’t wait to watch this show! I’d watch anything she’s in. I continued to watch the horribly written Smallville for 7 years ONLY because of her awesome portrayal of Lois Lane – which is kind of surprising, considering how heart-stoppingly gorgeous Tom Welling is. Unfortunately for Welling his Clark Kent was constantly written to be really slow on the uptake and somewhat of a whiny wimp – totally unattractive in my eyes, and goes to prove the old adage that looks aren’t everything. Fortunately for Tom Welling his scenes with Erica Durance made his Clark more hero than zero. No doubt Erica will bring out the best in her co-stars on Saving Hope as well!
Gurl, don’t insult Clark. I loved him and the super charming Tom Welling. I watched him grow from a boy to a man and I have such a soft spot for Clark. He was so sweet with his first love Lana, even if the break-up then make-up dance got irritating later on. And the chemistry with Lois later on was sizzling. But then Tom Welling has chemistry with everyone and everything, including coffee cups, innocent passersby, and birds in the trees. LOL. I am so happy for Erica. I think Saving Hope sounds really good. I think this could be another success for her. But any shade thrown at my darling Clark is fighting words and I will cut a b!tch over that! LOL
Totally agree with you word for for word!!
Bring it! Lol. IMO Tom Welling the person and actor is super charming and absolutely fabulous, but Clark Kent the character on Smallville was super stupid and really annoying more often than not. Lois Lane was frequently written badly as well, but at least Erica got to play her as fun and spunky. Tom Welling’s Clark, on the other hand, was often reduced to staggering ineptitude (in order to elevate the importance of another character, usually Chloe Sullivan) and had to sulk like a 5 year brat once too many times for me. Would you be so forgiving of the character if Tom Arnold had played Clark instead of Tom Welling??!
Thank you Judy for expressing my thoughts exactly. Have to admit I probably wouldn’t dare post it though! LOL! But I don’t think SV was horribly written hundred percent all the time! I think there were really good moments especially for Lois and between Clark and Lois.
For me, Smallville’s Lois and Clark had good relationship development and have the best rapport I’ve ever seen between tv couples.
Have to agree with Maria as well, “Clois” was sizzling hot (and continues to be so in fanfics).
And, yes, it’s true, TW has chemistry with everyone and anything! lol!
“Pass me the scalpel, hey…What hoser let that moose in ER?”
Seen it.
I hear Daniel Fathers is up for series regular ‘Dr.Harris.’ Anyone else hear that?
Cool. I like Erica Durance. The premise sounds interesting…for a medical drama.
Congratulations to, in my opinion, the best Lois Lane, Erica Durance on her Canadian show being picked up by NBC! Yay!
After being CIA agent Samantha Masters in CA and playing a wife turned vigilante while wearing a WW costume (ED wore it better i.m.o.) in HL, can’t wait to watch Dr. Alex Reid.
(Thank you, NBC! “Hoping” the show have a good summer run!!!)
Woohoo! Erica Durance rocks the planet!
One can only presume that it portrays a Canadian hospital and that any story lines about the poor needing life saving surgeries will be completely off the table, as well as the compelling arc of the twin sisters exploiting the DGA health plan.
Will watch for Durance and Shanks.
