With the contracts of two of NBCUniversal’s highest-profile pieces of talent, producer Ryan Seacrest and Today Show co-host Matt Lauer, coming up, the company will do everything possible to keep both, according to NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt. The commens came on the heels of reports about a meeting between NBC News and Seacrest, whose rich deal with E! Entertainment is up this month, about him potentially replacing Lauer on Today.
“We’d love to keep (Seacrest) in the family mostly because of his value to E!, he has become this incredible star,” Greenblatt said. But that will not come at the expense of losing Lauer, whose Today contract is up at the end of the year. “The No.1 priority is keeping Matt on Today and figuring way to keep Ryan in the family,” Greenblatt said. “It is our hope and belief that Matt will stay beyond his contract.” As for the different possible ways to keep Seacrest at NBCUniversal, there will be high-level company-wide executive meetings about that coming up, and NBC is ready to pitch in, Greenblatt said. “There is a desire on (Seacrest’s) part to do scripted shows,” he said. Greenblatt personally likes the idea of having Seacrest do interview specials for the network in the mold of Barbara Walters.

These might be called rich people problems
With all due respect to Ryan who is fantastic and a hard worker, he is no Matt Lauer or Barbara Walters and would be better served sticking to radio, hosting, and producing realty television. I recall hearing whispers at one time of FBC considering him for late night in conjunction with an AI renewal. Shoulda got him while you could’ve FBC. Probably would have a late night franchise by now. I’m sure he’d be a fine producer of scripted programming and an overall development deal could take place. It would be interesting to see what his pact with CKX looks like, can’t recall RSP has so many different type of deals.
I know I may get flamed for this, but I think Ryan Seacrest should be the next host of The Tonight Show. I think he would be perfect for this generation.
If they get Seacrest to the Today Show, they’re going to have get rid of Ann Curry. They don’t match.
Seacrest as the next Tonight Show Host? Yeah…you will get flamed for this. On behalf of jack par, johnny carson, jay leno…and every stand-up comic in the world: don’t speak on things you know nothing about.
seacrest is not a stand-up…which is in itself an artform. comics host the tonight show…now pretty boys.
I do think…however…after seeing him fill-in for larry king…seacrest DOES infact have very good interviewing skills. (he’s done it on the radio for many years)…so I do think he could infact be very successful with those kind of things mentioned above..but quite frankly…I think it’s below him.
if anything…seacrest is this generations merv griffin (sorry merv)
I actually agree that Tonight is a comic’s show, but the reason I said that is for the reasons you gave, which is his interview skills. I thought Johnny was a great interviewer as well. It would definitely be a different kind of Tonight, but I think he would make it a good show. Tonight is a comic’s show, but who is the comic? Conan failed, Jay is lame, and Fallon is not up for that job. He is horrible. I am just thinking they need to think outside the box. I do not see Seacrest as the host of Today. Some think he is this generation’s Dick Clark, but you might be right, he might be Merv.
