The working title of Russell Brand’s upcoming late-night series for FX is Strangely Uplifting, he and the series executive producer Troy Miller revealed during the show’s TCA session today. The British comedian sure lived up to first part of the title with his behavior, jumping from topic to topic in a stream-of-consciousness style. Strangely Uplifting, billed as showcasing Brand’s unfiltered view on things, will shoot in front of live audience 2-3 days before air, with the premiere slated for April. Miller stressed that the show will be very stripped-down, with Brand giving his take on hard and soft news and anything that interests him. “I’d like this show to be news and topical comedy, stripped of all nonsense, stripped of all subterfuge,” Brand said. “These people in the news, they’re filling our minds with shit glitter.” What if Brand himself is in the news? “If I’ve done something actually newsworthy, then I’d cover it,” he said.
Brand gave a taste of what his take on current events may look like. “Why are we more outraged by pissing on a dead body than killing a live body? It’s the killing that’s the problem,” he said, a reference to the news story of Marines urinating on dead Taliban bodies. As for the Republican presidential candidates, Brand admitted that he doesn’t know much about them before taking a shot at frontrunner Mitt Romney. “Mitt Romney is so rich even the 1% seem to him like peasants. Other billionaires must seem like Dickensian street urchins eating gruel with fingerless gloves.” After poking fun at Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum’s names, Russell declared that he is not interested in covering the presidential race. “I’m not going to be part of the meaningless spectacle,” he said. “It’s like describing individual termites.”
What does Brit Brand like about America? “I think it’s done really wonderful things with the English language.”

I find it absolutely hilarious that most of these comments are hating on Brand. Why must we fill our time talking negatively about someone we don’t like? Why are we do obsessed with talking shit? I think Brand has a interesting mind and is more intelligent than most give him credit (admittedly, I do not watch much film, so my opinion of him comes from his blog and podcasts) .. and if I didn’t like him, I’d do what normal adults do and carry on with life instead of wasting my energy talking shit like children in a cafeteria.
I think Brand is one of the smartest comedians I’ve ever heard. He’s extremely quick-witted and although he’s frequently crass that doesn’t automatically undermine his intellect, IMO. When some of the top comedians in the U.S. are Dane Cook and Will Ferrell, I think it will be hugely refreshing to have someone with something to say instead of just making stupid faces and annoying sounds. And as far as his comment about killing the Taliban, it’s not like he’s saying the Taliban are the good guys.. he’s obviously saying that our outrage over the pissing is highly ironic *in light* of the fact that those people have just been killed. You might think its ok to kill people we consider terrorists, but is pissing on someone WORSE than killing them that you should feel outrage over the former and not the latter? It doesn’t make sense. I’m glad he’s pointing it out. Feel outrage at both at least.
He’s poetic and can be very deep at times. His few popular performances (such as the VMAs and bit parts in Adam Sandler movies) don’t nearly do him justice. He is very liberal though and if that is insta-hate for you, you will probably not like him. If your beef with him is that he is crass, you will probably never like him. If you just think he’s not funny, try again and bring your attention with you, because you have to be in smart listening mode to get his humor a lot of times. If you like smart comedians like George Carlin and Katt Williams, you’ll probably like him if you keep listening.
I can’t wait to see his talk show, but I do agree it probably won’t last long. Despite his history of hetero sex addiction and recent marriage, his dandyish persona will probably offend the rampant homophobic hordes. Hopefully they’ll just cancel his show and not get together with Newt and Rick to lynch him.
