EXCLUSIVE: The revolving door at the struggling OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network continues without slowing, and even without warning or public announcement. This time it has claimed one of Winfrey’s closest and most trusted executives, Lisa Erspamer. We’ve learned that Erspamer, EVP of production and development for the underperforming cable network, was let go yesterday after an 18-year tenure with Winfrey. We hear that the news was delivered to Erspamer while Winfrey was out of the country. (Oprah has been in India to interview Deepak Chopra for her new show Oprah’s Next Chapter.) We hear Erspamer didn’t even receive the news from Oprah personally. No public statement was made. Instead an internal ”Assistant to the Office of the President” email was sent around only to staff: one of those impersonal “we wish her well” announcements. “Lisa was shocked,” a source tells us. “She’d been in Oprah’s inner circle. She went on cruises and vacations with Winfrey. She’d worked for her for almost 20 years. Oprah had transitioned her to OWN personally.” UPDATE THURSDAY AM: We heard from an OWN spokesperson this morning, who said: “Oprah called Lisa Erspamer from India where she is shooting an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter, and by mutual agreement they decided that it was time for Lisa to move on.”
When Oprah first brought her longtime producer Erspamer to OWN, Winfrey praised her as a “creative superstar”. Now we hear that Erspamer, who had been in charge of programming, is taking the fall for the network’s rough first year on the air. That includes the tanking Rosie O’Donnell daily talk show which Erspamer most recently was in charge of trying to fix. But it had been Oprah’s idea to bring Rosie to the OWN network “so why isn’t Oprah blaming herself for the show’s .3 rating?” one source complains to us. ”It’s a disaster.” The network just shook up the Rosie Show by replacing original executive producer Page Hurwitz with Shane Farley and overhauling the show’s set after less than 3 months of use. The Rosie Show got off to a decent ratings start with 500,000 viewers tuning in to its October debut. But quickly lost a large chunk of its audience and now averages only about 200,000 viewers.
Erspamer first joined Winfrey’s Harpo Prods. in 1994 and rose through the ranks to co-executive producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show. That’s where she was in charge of the highest-profile episodes, including the two-part Whitney Houston interview and the big Pontiac giveaway. Erspamer was summoned to OWN in January 2010, following the first major shakeup at the Harpo/Discovery Communications venture that saw the exit of president Robin Schwartz and the appointment as CEO of Christina Norman who exited later on. Erspamer’s move was somewhat surprising since she had no TV series or network experience. “Lisa has been a creative superstar,” Winfrey said at the time. “She’s brought fire and force to many of the incredible shows we’ve done over the years. I value her passion and sensibilities and trust her instincts and judgment. I know she’ll be a great fit with the OWN team.”
Erspamer’s title changed last July when Winfrey, originally chairman of OWN, also named herself CEO and chief creative officer in the wake of Norman’s exit, while Harpo Studios presidents Erik Logan and Sheri Salata became OWN presidents. In light of that, Erspamer’s position was changed from chief creative officer to EVP of production and development. Salata has been overseeing programming, along with Winfrey, and is expected to continue to do so.
OWN has soaked up some $300 million in investment funds by Discovery Communications but has largely failed to outperform the Discovery Health network it replaced. Heavily promoted entries like Mark Burnett’s reality series Your OWN Show, Oprah Presents Master Class, and Rosie have disappointed. The network’s best ratings news in almost a year came at the beginning of January when Winfrey’s new series, Oprah’s Next Chapter, posted all-time highs in its first 2 airings. But it, too, has since dropped significantly.

Salata should really walk the plank; I bet a lot of those ideas were hers too.
Perhaps. But the ultimate failure is Oprah’s entirely.
There would be no dishonor in weak ratings if the woman, who accrued more money and clout than God, decided to make her second act courageous by producing content of daring, innovative substance–television she could at least point to at the end of her life and, say, well, I fought the good fight; the audience just didn’t show.
If Martin Luther King, Jr. was alive today, trying to speak out against the endless wars as he spoke out against Vietnam, Oprah wouldn’t have him on for being too controversial and insufficiently uplifting.
She’s a hollow symbol, going down for the count selling the audio/visual equivalent of hollow trinkets.
Fitzgerald was right.
“If Martin Luther King, Jr. was alive today, trying to speak out against the endless wars as he spoke out against Vietnam, Oprah wouldn’t have him on for being too controversial and insufficiently uplifting.”
This is exactly where OWN’s programming is failing. It has been reported elsewhere that WInfrey’s vision for OWN is one that excludes anything she personally finds “negative”, which has left viewers with a lot of new-age fluff (Tony Robbins), guru religion (Joel Osteen, Iyanla VanZant), and an occasional peek into the lives of the rich & famous. It’s like CBN for upper middle class housewives and longtime Oprah sycophants.
Where’s the edge, where’s the daring, where’s the courage and true social empathy she had at the beginning of her career? Somewhere between Favorite Things and Find Your Spirit, she lost me and thousands of others, I’m sure.
OWN is a cable channel people have to pay extra for. I’m not paying $15 a month to listen to rich people tell me that I can pray my way into prosperity or that the hardships I’m now facing are some cosmic lessons from God.
The Costa Concordia had more casualties (unfortunately), but it’s not the only sinking ship in the world.
The pre-crash CC was a bigger audience than OWN has.
Perhaps OWN’s failings are because everyone is just sick and tired of Oprah. You know, she puts the O in narcissism
Formerly Oprah was a bright young woman who came to Chicago and beat the odds with the city’s help. But now she now believes she has a ‘magic’ touch and can do anything with ease. Winfrey needs to take a step back and re-evaluate her abilities.
@O-blah. Sorry, but no. When Oprah herself headlines something, people watch. It’s the other programming that people find not so interesting – the documentaries, Gayle King, etc. If Oprah were on OWN 24 hours a day, it would have great ratings.
Absolutely. People want Oprah. Period.
Always sucks when the business reminds u that it’s a business. Gets some friends outside of this crsp because we’re all a memo away from unemployment.
Oprah’s a narcissist posing as a saint. More power to her great success, but can we stop with the halo routine?
Good. Everyone was beginning to think she had something on O. Why else would someone like that get to keep her “job” for so long. Embarrassing.
Dear Oprah– Oh No Oprah— Why Lisa ? Lisa for years has given her heart, her soul, and her 24/7 life to you and your brand. This is so sad. Lisa has been one of your greatest assets Oprah. Oprah, surely this is a big mistake. I know that you are out of the country and were out of the country when this happened but surely when you return to the U.S.–I am certain that you will fix this grave mistake and restore Lisa to her deserved status.
I do that just to give you meaningful work.
OWN is suffering from what i call T.F.S. Viewers are not going to pay to watch Oprah and Co., when they had Ms.O for Free for 25 years, not to mention OWN is mostly way up on the Digital Cable lineup (when most viewers hang around their basic cable and Local stations lineup of channels) so the best thing that Discovery and Harpo can do to save this Network is re-distribute it as a Broadcast Sub-channel. I would Guarantee that OWN would have 80% of the Broadcast Markets signed within 30 days of offering it. Oprah is still marketable but all this negetive press is doing nothing but hurting the once #1 brand. Can you just Imagine having Oprah (and Rosie) back on your local Station. WHAT A THOUGHT! for advertisers and viewers alike.
P.S. wondering what T.F.S. is…
“The Friends Syndrome” How many of the 6 friends have made successful transitions to the Box Office “Zero”. Aniston cannot be the Julia & Sandra shes trying to be, because Americans had her every Thursday for 10 years FREE, and still today for FREE.
Interesting. I think it’s more that Oprah and Discovery over-estimated Oprah’s appeal. They failed to take note that Oprah’s “Specials” that aired at night failed miserably. No one watched them.
It’s a case of drinking too much of the “positive thoughts make reality” punch. Sorry, Oprah but thoughts alone won’t make your network successful, just like they won’t make you thin. (Recall Oprah had that The Secret idiot on her show who claimed that fat people are fat because of their negative thoughts. He’s now doing jail time for manslaughter in AZ)
Are the idiots who run OWN’s reality division still there? Every single one of them should be fired, and not because they do reality programming but because they suck at it.
And what “reality” doesn’t suck?
Firing a friend of 20 years by having a secretary send an internal email to staff?
Wow, I hope there is more to this story, because if it’s a clear cut as it sounds, Oprah doesn’t seem to be up to the goody stuff she preaches. Would you do that to your friends?
Honestly…one of the reason OWN is tanking HAS GOT TO DO with its placement. When I am flipping through the channels, i don’t surf to 219. I barely make it past the 100s. Most days, I forget the network is there…
The original programs are not that disastrous. It’s all about getting those eyeballs in front of the programs. Most eyeballs don’t go to the 200s.
There is no loyalty.
Total classlessness on oprahs part for not doing this herself in person. You just don’t treat long time employees like that if you expect anyone else to work hard for you going forward.
The entire own existence has been an unmitigated disaster.
OWN has no programming that appeals to me.
just saw the new rosie show… it’s good… more intimate (maybe a little too intimate)… interview with kathy griffin… much simpler… nice small set and the two just talking… as an interview show it was very good… though i really liked her doing standup and talking to the large audience but there didn’t seem to be a solid structure before… it was live then it was taped… one guest… multiple guests… bands… no bands…
Oprah’s network shows will only succeed in syndication. Look at how Martha Stewart’s audience (what was left of it) faded away when she was only on Hallmark. OWN now has to compete against the other 500 cable ‘network’ channels, and that world is abysmal.
Just because you are a great talk show producer does not mean you are a great development or network executive. The biggest mistake Oprah has made was thinking that her team, which were masters at producing her show, are masters at jobs they have never done before. They are beginners!! Look at all of the Oprah producers who were paid big money to produce syndicated shows. They have all failed.
Oprah should have picked up both of the ABC cancelled soaps and brought them to OWN. Even if they were rebooted to half hour formats, those two shows would have drawn 2 million plus fans to OWN which would have made them the two biggest hows on the network. Spending 50 million on the soaps is a lot better than $300 million on shows no one is watching.
Excellent point of picking up the cancelled soaps to get the eyeballs for a start to increasing OWN viewership.
AWESOME idea! The abandoned fanbase AMC/OLTL audience alone could jack the net’s ratings hugely. AND, the soaps can roll back their production costs by doing it old school–all interiors, simple music, reduced casts, etc. It’s the stories and the characters that kept the fans, not hi tech production.
OWN should pick up any old cancelled soaps and/or start some of their own and stick Rosie in the middle of ‘em.
Hell I can’t even get past the sobby/sighing/breathy male spoke-person voice that announces program contents. He sounds either severly constapated or in the midst of a serious diarrhea moment.
I suppose it’s ment to sound like a non-agressive, gentle and sweet voice to the female audience
The folks that Oprah’s selected over the past year to get OWN up and running do not appear to have any experiences in launching either tv-network or cable programming. They seem to be smart, resourceful and loyal. But if you peel back their portfolios, neither cable nor network television management are in their resumes.
As an example, whoever advised Ms. Winfrey to meet with Comcast exec’s about sub-fees is sadly misguided. That’s like asking Oprah to call on 200 affiliates to sell her syndicated show in 1986 when you have the best syndication salesman, (the late) Roger King, sitting on the sidelines. Where is Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav & Co. when it comes to leveraging their mighty multiple networks for fees?
With a reported $300M+ invested in OWN, when does Discovery step in to right the ship?
What a news flash! Oprah not taking responsibility (“Rosie” for example) while preaching to everyone else.
Everyone is afraid to say it for some reason, so here goes. By Oprahs own (so to speak) admission she NEVER watches TV!
The sterling example of that is Rosie. What were he comments when she put Rosie in place? “No one has ever come closer to me in the ratings for a talk show then her, and she is here”. Um, that was in the mid to late 90′s. Does she also not read the papers which were filled with Rosie’s slanderous attacks on guests, politicians, co-hosts etc. on a little talk show called The View?
Does she not hear the comments about how rude she has been to fans on the street for years?
Oprah must accept the fact that she is not a cable TV channel. What makes her Oprah IS her. Anything show that involves her will do well. Those are the only programs that have done well thus far, and you can’t have her on 24/7.
Boy – you may have hit on it! She never watches TV? Thats like saying you want to be a writer but dont read books or want to be a musician but cant be bothered going to concerts or listening to music.
Tip for Oprah. There is a sweet little cozy mystery series called the ‘Mama’ series by the late Norah De Loach. Option it, hire a screenwriter, tailor it to yourself as the main character and you or your friend Tyler Perry direct.
Without scripted programming there is NOTHING Oprah can do that isnt done a lot better on other channels and without the annoyance of personalities who the American public just cant warm up to.
My dad, a longtime television executive, gave me advice when I went into the business, regarding talent and other executives…”Don’t drink with them, don’t sleep with them and never think their your friends.”
No, THEY’RE usually not.
C’est la vie.
OWNs problem is the scheduling of their shows. They have NO continuity of programs. Still, I watch OWN everyday. At least Oprah is trying to make this world a better place with what she puts out to the public. She is always trying to evolve the human species much more than any other network out there. Terminations of resources are always a hard job, that why God made wine. Enjoy your jobs while you can and like Suze Orman would say, live under your means and save enough money for 6 months for emergencies… This should be a wake up call to everyone working…..loyality is to the bottom line.
