EXCLUSIVE: The revolving door at the struggling OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network continues without slowing, and even without warning or public announcement. This time it has claimed one of Winfrey’s closest and most trusted executives, Lisa Erspamer. We’ve learned that Erspamer, EVP of production and development for the underperforming cable network, was let go yesterday after an 18-year tenure with Winfrey. We hear that the news was delivered to Erspamer while Winfrey was out of the country. (Oprah has been in India to interview Deepak Chopra for her new show Oprah’s Next Chapter.) We hear Erspamer didn’t even receive the news from Oprah personally. No public statement was made. Instead an internal ”Assistant to the Office of the President” email was sent around only to staff: one of those impersonal “we wish her well” announcements. “Lisa was shocked,” a source tells us. “She’d been in Oprah’s inner circle. She went on cruises and vacations with Winfrey. She’d worked for her for almost 20 years. Oprah had transitioned her to OWN personally.” UPDATE THURSDAY AM: We heard from an OWN spokesperson this morning, who said: “Oprah called Lisa Erspamer from India where she is shooting an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter, and by mutual agreement they decided that it was time for Lisa to move on.”
When Oprah first brought her longtime producer Erspamer to OWN, Winfrey praised her as a “creative superstar”. Now we hear that Erspamer, who had been in charge of programming, is taking the fall for the network’s rough first year on the air. That includes the tanking Rosie O’Donnell daily talk show which Erspamer most recently was in charge of trying to fix. But it had been Oprah’s idea to bring Rosie to the OWN network “so why isn’t Oprah blaming herself for the show’s .3 rating?” one source complains to us. ”It’s a disaster.” The network just shook up the Rosie Show by replacing original executive producer Page Hurwitz with Shane Farley and overhauling the show’s set after less than 3 months of use. The Rosie Show got off to a decent ratings start with 500,000 viewers tuning in to its October debut. But quickly lost a large chunk of its audience and now averages only about 200,000 viewers.
Erspamer first joined Winfrey’s Harpo Prods. in 1994 and rose through the ranks to co-executive producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show. That’s where she was in charge of the highest-profile episodes, including the two-part Whitney Houston interview and the big Pontiac giveaway. Erspamer was summoned to OWN in January 2010, following the first major shakeup at the Harpo/Discovery Communications venture that saw the exit of president Robin Schwartz and the appointment as CEO of Christina Norman who exited later on. Erspamer’s move was somewhat surprising since she had no TV series or network experience. “Lisa has been a creative superstar,” Winfrey said at the time. “She’s brought fire and force to many of the incredible shows we’ve done over the years. I value her passion and sensibilities and trust her instincts and judgment. I know she’ll be a great fit with the OWN team.”
Erspamer’s title changed last July when Winfrey, originally chairman of OWN, also named herself CEO and chief creative officer in the wake of Norman’s exit, while Harpo Studios presidents Erik Logan and Sheri Salata became OWN presidents. In light of that, Erspamer’s position was changed from chief creative officer to EVP of production and development. Salata has been overseeing programming, along with Winfrey, and is expected to continue to do so.
OWN has soaked up some $300 million in investment funds by Discovery Communications but has largely failed to outperform the Discovery Health network it replaced. Heavily promoted entries like Mark Burnett’s reality series Your OWN Show, Oprah Presents Master Class, and Rosie have disappointed. The network’s best ratings news in almost a year came at the beginning of January when Winfrey’s new series, Oprah’s Next Chapter, posted all-time highs in its first 2 airings. But it, too, has since dropped significantly.

At the end of the day the only pure success Oprah’s been involved with was her daytime talk show–and she absolutely took that format from Donahue and made it her “own.”
LIterally everything else she’s touched in the last 25 years has had serious problems like the ones outlined above, including her magazine, her boarding school, the movies she’s produced, Oxygen, etc.
Discovery health will be back on the air within 14 months.
The irony of Oprah having a Lifeclass about Ego and how she’s not like that anymore….while preaching a lifeclass….on a network named OWN….being lost on her is a perfect metaphor for the network.
Rosie is a disaster looking for a place to happen. Next to Kim K and Paris Hilton she is probably number 3 on the no talent TV “celebrities” list. Being a loud mouth doesn’t relate to talent for me. Hopefully “Your fired”
Here’s a crazy idea…..maybe they should start hiring executives to run that place that actually have experience in terms of programming, development, and production at a NETWORK. Insane, right? They can hire all the talk show producers and friends of Oprah that they want (i.e. Sheri), but until they hire people that actually know what the hell they are doing – the downward spiral continues.
Totally agree. No one wants to pay for qualified people anymore so they get Jrs to do the job. That in the end costs them more money and in this case – crappy product. Oprah needs a looong vaca. Maybe to build some more schools! No one can save that NET.
That rule especially applies to reality television…
This place has let go of so more execs than all the other networks combined in the last 10 years! Christina Norman, Robin Schwartz, Rod Aisa, Lisa Erspamer, and there were one or two others right? Go back to daytime talk lady. People loved you in one hour doses for a reason.
Hey Oprah! How’s the stench of failure taste? You’re also proving by your actions that you’re certainly not much of a friend or relatable business associate. Keep on blaming others for your ridiculous idea…”I’ll start my very OWN cable network! The world will just love me more.”
Dream on.
Hey David….Oprah belongs in front of the camera, not in an exec office. Then, pull together the team that launched The WB, starting with nothing, and let them do their magic again.
Oprah is a terrific talk show host and actress.
THAT DOES NOT MAKE A CEO OR COO OR CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER!
Have no doubt she has smarts and an ability to connect with people personally.
It’s utter lunacy that she should therefore be able to develop TV shows or run a network.
Besides, did anyone see their big try in ABC’s The Big Give – an utter disaster? Wasn’t that a clue?
OWN is brand extension, and Oprah’s brand cannot be extended.
I just finished working on a train wreck of a show for OWN. Every decision their executives make is counter-intuitive.
Suzanne Daniels is just whipping that place into shape, not to worry. OWN has some promising shows in development, some with pilots already shot, that will be attention-grabbing while still staying true to Oprah’s brand. Don’t count OWN out yet. Remember Lifetime before Nancy Dubuc? She helped make that network relevant and so will Suzanne for OWN, she rocks.
Agreed with above comment about talk show hosts trying to become legitimate producers of film and television outside their own interests. Oprah’s work in film and television outside of her own show has been subpar and her devotion to her inner group has bred a lackluster track record. Not fun when jobs are lost, but probably more to come in this climate. There’s simply no success to justify their ranks and paychecks.
Hey, wasn’t Oprah supposed to be more hands-on after she ended her talk show? Guess not when it comes to canning a longtime friend and partner….
I think that is so sad oprah i have loved who you are for ever you could have done that a better way i Never comment on anything dont really type oprah fix this dont know the lady but thats not right did she do something to you ? i know its hard people do you wrong. tell me something dont want to think you are that kind of person!
Rosie isn’t working because the guests are terrible. A-list talent will only fly to Chicago for a sit down with Oprah. Move Rosie to NY or LA and it would be a different show.
Reminds me of living in chicago and meeting with a recruiter abt an oprah job. I called several loval reporters all of whom told me that if i took the job id be miserable
Wow I guess Oprah should have took OLTL & AMC she said she couldn’t save our soaps but maybe the could have saved her. That’s Karma Oprah don’t care about the people they don’t care about you anymore. Want to reconsider you could use the viewers OlTl had
I am getting an idea of what type of viewers they were, and am not surprised that the plug was pulled.
Different story to have a staff of 450 produce a 1-hour daily Oprah on network, than have a staff close to that size produce 24/7 broadcasting on cable year in, year out. Lisa E probably saw the writing on the wall. The EP’s always take the fall. But, it’s the cable research dept that failed. Obviously no one had the guts to tell O…you’re delusional.
I agree that placement is a big part of the problem. I watch OWN and have been very impressed with most of the programming, disappointed in some of it, but the work Oprah herself is doing would be very successful if people could find it. Rosie’s one-on-one interviews are some of the best I’ve ever seen…and, I’m not a Rosie O’Donnell fan!
Lisa: believe me, this is one of the best things to happen to you.
This so-called “network” will be a footnote in 5 years.
The handwritings on the wall but no one wants to read it.
The Rosie show is not doing a .3 rating as noted in the story. It’s doing a .1 on Homes and a .05 on Adults 18-49.
I know Lisa’s brother, Mike, great guy and a great surfer. I’ve never met Lisa. Hopefully she can use this down time to focus on family and friends. I’m sure she’ll land on her feet somewhere. And who knows, maybe she’ll take up surfing and catch a few waves with her brother.
when does positive thinking become denial? right about now.
I bet MeTV that shows Twlight Zone, Mary Tyler Moore, Route 66 etc does better in ratings.
People slamming O’s record forget Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Rachel Ray, that’s a pretty good track record of shows. She needs shows along the lines of Hoarders and Intervention but more inspirational in tone.
