Harvey Weinstein’s films received a remarkable 16 Oscar nominations this morning. That beats his 13 noms last year but not Sony Pictures’ 21 or paramount’s 18 this year. Then again The Weinstein Company is a helluva lot smaller. Ten of its noms were for the French black-and-white silent film The Artist, which is clearly the one to beat for Best Picture. In his first statement about the Oscar nomination haul, Weinstein said: “The art of performing in a silent movie is a lost process, and I have to thank the director and brilliant ensemble of actors in The Artist. We wouldn’t be here today without their talent. The Artist is a love letter to classic American cinema, and today the Academy gave us a love letter back.

“Special congratulations also goes to Meryl Streep from The Iron Lady, Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh from My Week With Marilyn, and to all of our other film nominees including best documentary Undefeated. Today is a great day for celebrating creative courage, visionary talent, and the power of independent cinema to inspire, to entertain, and to move people in all kinds of new and exciting ways.”
The Artist hauled in got Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Michel Havanavicius, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, and Best Supporting Actress for Berenice Bejo. The Weinstein Company has two frontrunner in the Best Actress category with My Week With Marilyn’s Michelle Williams and Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady. And Kenneth Branagh got a Best Supporting Actor for My Week With Marilyn.

As Harvey says, “Today is a great day for celebrating” – but i think he meant to say “for celebrating Weinstein Co’s marketing savvy”…
My vote – War Horse
MONEYBALL.
No directing love for Bennet Miller? Ridiculous. But hey its just an awards show that will not affect my life (opens Final Draft..)
made me laugh
16 nominations and the Giants in the Super Bowl do not fully heal Harvey’s pain from his beloved Jets.
Harvey, nothing is perfect, and you are having a great week.
Say what you want about the man, but he does have excellent taste in films and the ability to make sure they get out there. Would any other studio or dependent have taken a chance on ARTIST or even MARILYN?
Neither The Artist nor this Marilyn are especially chancey films. Both are nostalgia pieces. I will not go into the inherent difficulties of portraying Marilyn Monroe at this time. The world does not need a French replacement for Roberto Bernigni.
This is already the most boring Academy Awards show of all time. There is no ‘new’ Scorcese or Lucas even, anywhere, hell not even a Tim Burton. Bad year.
The real film to watch is Dimension’s “Piranha 3DD” this Summer.
Amazing
Harvey’s brilliant period. It’s time for the ‘haters’ to stop it already. Independent film is a major global force economically and creatively due to the vision of Harvey and his various companies. We all know it, have profited from it and must pay homage to it. Passion+intelligence+fearlessness+good taste ……
