EXCLUSIVE: Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, and Christopher Walken are circling Freezing People Is Easy, a script by Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Errol Morris will direct. Film Rites’ Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch are producing with This American Life‘s Ira Glass and Alissa Shipp.

Inspired by the memoir We Froze The First Man and an episode of This American Life, the film tell the true story of Bob Nelson, a 1960s Los Angeles television repairman who tried to pioneer the field of cryogenics by freezing humans. He quickly discovered that it was more difficult than he imagined.

The cast is pretty much locked — Rudd has been attached for months to play Nelson — though Bridesmaids star Wiig is the variable: she’s completing her run on Saturday Night Live and poring over several offers. The producers and the film’s reps at WME and UTA are starting to talk up the film with financiers. The intention is to shoot for a mid-2012 start date. Wilson, Wiig and Zaillian are up for Golden Globes this year. WME reps Morris and Film Rites; UTA reps Rudd, Wilson, Wiig and This American Life; and ICM reps Walken.

Hey Walken. I love you, but please stop doing what De Niro has done to his career. Yes, it’s funny to see you in a comedy or two from time to time.
Can you please give us a KING OF NEW YORK, TRUE ROMANCE, or AT CLOSE RANGE again? Once in a while?
I looked forward to some of my heroes turning in performances in their 60′s and such. However, all of you have just lost the plot. De Niro, Pacino, Hoffman etc…
Hackman retired. Eastwood is still throwing us a pearl now and again.
At least the Brits like Oldman are still sending them our way.
If you all stop inspiring the young generations, we end up with “Movie Stars” who have abs, but no artistry. Hair gel, but no technique.
Just want to let you know: Errol Morris directed this. It’s not as “lowbrow” as its cast might suggest.
Older actors don’t get all the work they’d like. I think Oldman is pretty much in the same boat as Walken and De Niro, and I don’t think the quality of the work is so different. Remember Red Riding Hood? The Book of Eli? The Unborn? Yes, he’s got Tinker Tailor, The Dark Knight Rises, etc. But Walken’s got this and Seven Psychopaths on the horizon, De Niro’s got a David O. Russell movie and The Comedian. I think they all make interesting choices when they can.
Best. Package. Ever.
wait, does this mean Wiig is leaving SNL for the summer break, or for good at the end of this season?
I hope she’s leaving. Was a big fan of her work on SNL, until she started appearing in EVERY damn skit. Enough over the top facial ticks and scenery chewing.
Her limited range consists of: wild, wacky Carol Burnett impersonations, or sad-sack jilted lover. Enough.
Unless she’s got bugs on her face, it’s “tics.”
To wit: “Do you want me to sing?”
This movie needs to get made. Genius.
Wow, what a great cast! Especially Owen and Christopher.
And I love the storyline, too. I sure hope this gets made with these actors!
Great director and cast, but a very messy script. It’s been out to financiers for months…
Huh? I’m at financier and I read – the script and Zach are brilliant. You don’t attract this kind of cast without it.
As a very young kid, living in NY, before I even dreamed of being in the Entertainment Business I read, was fascinated by and loved the book “We Froze The First Man” and now can’t wait to see it as a modern day feature with such a great cast!!
Nice to see that Ira Glass working his way into the system with something from his bag of tricks.
