The official pilot pickup season kicked off in the past 2 weeks with orders at the CW, Fox NBC and ABC, with CBS as usual late to the party.
The CW, which ordered the first pilot of 2012, mystery drama Cult, will likely greenlight the most pilots in its history, between 6-8 dramas and possibly 1 or 2 comedies as the network is mounting an aggressive push in offering more originals year-round under new president Mark Pedowitz. The CW has been mulling a return to comedy and developed a handful of half-hour scripts but it is unclear if any of them will go to pilot. Among the buzzed about projects at the network are Arrow, based on the Green Arrow DC Comics, which nears a pilot order, the Sex & the City prequel The Carrie Diaries, the Beauty And The Beast reboot and a medical drama by Jennie Snyder Urman.
It is possible that the CW orders more drama pilots than Fox this season. Fox is looking to pick up 5 hourlong pilots with 2 of the slots already taken by the recent orders to the Marc Guggenheim/Greg Berlanti legal drama Guilty and a serial killer drama by Kevin Williamson. Among those in serious consideration are the Josh Friedman spy drama and Silvio Horta’s Latino family dramedy executive produced by Jennifer Lopez. On the comedy side, Fox is looking to order 8-10 pilots, with 3 picked up so far, off-cycle half-hour Little Brother, which has had some difficulties casting, Dana Fox’s Ben Fox Is My Daddy and Rob McElhenney’s Living Loaded. The network has a Bill Lawrence comedy with a production commitment.
NBC went into the traditional pilot pickup season with the biggest head start having already picked up 5 pilots in the fourth quarter of last year, dramas Beautiful People and a Munsters reboot, which are casting, and comedies Isabel, which has been cast, and the Sarah Silverman project and Save Me (cast-contingent), both currently casting. NBC added 4 more pilots to its tally on Friday, dramas Frontier, Midnight Sun (aka Pillars of Smoke) and Do No Harm and an untitled female buddy comedy from Kari Lizer. NBC’s target is about 10 drama pilots and 10-12 comedies, making competition for the remaining slots pretty fierce. In addition to Frontier, I hear NBC may pick up another of the 3 Western script it had ordered, possibly the one written by Kerry Ehrin. Also getting strong buzz at NBC are the Dick Wolf-produced firefighter drama, J.J. Abrams-Eric Kripke’s epic Revolution, which has a big commitment, and the Howard Gordon-produced Legends. On the comedy side, Greg Daniels’ Friday Night Dinner is expected to go, while Ryan Murphy/Alison Adler’s comedy about a gay couple and their surrogate and the Will Gluck produced The Yard, which have production commitments, have been exploring casting choices. Also tracking well is Jason Winer, Josh Gad and Jon Lovett’s first family comedy.
ABC is expected to stay close to last year’s number of pilots: 10-12 dramas and that many comedies. The network already ordered Roland Emmerich’s metaphysical drama, Shonda Rhimes/KJ Steinberg period drama Giilded Lillys and Shawn Ryan/Karl Gajdusek’s Last Resort as well as a sisters comedy from Stephnie Weir and Claudia Lonow and off-cycle half-hour pilots The Manzanis starring Kirstie Alley and a Dan Fogelman alien comedy. Other talked about comedies include Lonow’s other comedy at the network, a Kari Lizer project and a Bob Fisher/Shawn Levy comedy starring Mandy Moore. Additionally, a Shana Goldberg-Meehan comedy starring JoAnna Garcia has a production commitment. On the drama side, a Moira Kirland procedural, a high-concept Michael Green cop drama and Carlton Cuse’s spiritual drama are among those talked about.
CBS is eying 7-9 drama pilots and as many comedies. Its only order so far was to Jon Favreau’s single-camera spec Tweaked. The network’s reboot of Rifleman from Laeta Kalogridis, Chris Columbus and Carol Mendesohn is getting a lot of buzz, with a female-lead drama from Anna Fricke, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci also hot, along with the Nick Wootton/Berlanti cop drama Golden Boy, the Rob Doherty-penned contemporary Sherlock Holmes drama and the Mendelsohn-produced Mommy Track Mysteries. On the comedy side, Bill Lawrence and Greg Malins’ project has a production commitment, while David Kohan and Max Mutchnick’s semi-autobiographical sitcom has been tracking well.

I don’t understand what ABC needs that many comedy pilots for. They’re going to have a tough time finding space as is considering that their 4 wednesday night comedies and LMS are rock solid. And Apartment 23 hasn’t even premiered yet.
They’re gearing up for a third comedy night on Friday. Not all of these will make it anyway
I would love it if ABC returned to comedies on Friday nights. I grew-up on TGIF!
I’ve passionately suggested this to execs at ABC during my pitch meetings and I’m sure that’s why they will be the last network to hire me.
ABC has 3 solid Wednesday night comedies, not 4. Happy Endings is unwatchable and holding only 53% of its lead-in in the demo.
Happy Endings is hilarious!
What about Deadman? And Revolution wasn’t ordered to pilot?
Read the article again, it mentions Revolution.
If Revolution is so “hot,” then why are they being made to do a page one rewrite?
That is a lie.
Uh, no, it’s not.
Has anyone heard mention of the hour long supernatural comedy “The Watch?”
Where is the Peter Berg pilot VEGAS BABY? I LOVE that script. Is it at NBC?
VEGAS BABY totally snuck up on me. Reads like a Vegas through the eyes of Tarantino mixed with Leonard. What’s happening with it? Why was it kept so secret? Peter Berg right?
Peter Berg and Film 44. They keep their stuff under wraps. VEGAS BABY is dark but funny. A day in the life kind of story and it just happens to be Vegas. The characters are great. It’s Vegas and everyone wants something including the Bus Boy. I can’t believe NBC has waited to pick it up.
Boy, I see a lot of names that keep striking out at the plate here… good to see everybody failing upwards.
House and Fringe are probably history.
VEGAS BABY is one of my favorites. Been kept really closed and off the grid. Just getting out now. It’s crazy good.
FACE VALUE and THE CARRIE DIARIES are the best pilots at CW. Although it’s oo bad they will pick the most obvious one to pick up and not the other.
Do you work at the CW? I’ve never even heard of Face Value…
Yay Bill Lawrence comedies! And I have high hopes for Greg Daniels’ Friday Night Dinner, as I love the BBC version- though, the casting is going to have to be spot on to make it work!
Friday Night Dinner hasn’t been written. Where oh where are you getting your intel?
Reboot? Reboot? Hardly – these are nothing more than retreads.
Can’t wait to watch family comedies written by straight working men and ryan murphy!!!!!
It should not be a surprise that the CW will order a lot of pilot pick-ups. The network needs to be drastically revamped, as I only see at the max 4 shows returning (Vamp,Secret,NextModel,Dixie).
Don’t be surprised if Fox keeps a lot of its veteran shows, but only for 13ep orders. This way they can continue with their Fall & Winter season concept.
ABC still seems to have the “throw it against the wall and see what sticks” mentality left over from the previous boss. Not a bad idea, just not my style.
Boy, it must suck to be a successful ‘failure’ on CBS. (See, A Gifted Man)
NBC…..UMmmmmmm. We all like underdogs…Don’t we?
haha, Emor i love your post… so true!
Regarding the cw i like their lineup at the moment. what i dont watch are Dixie, ANTM and ALL the other reality junk. I believe GG, and SN should get one final season, 90210 the axe and Ringer, Nikita, TVD and TSC should get at least another year.
My scheduling philosophy would be:
Mon: GG & Carrie Diaries
Tues: Nikita & Ringer
Weds: Arrow & SN
Thur: TVD and SC (as is!)
Fri : 2 sitcoms & ANTM
Midseason: beauty and the beast reboot
FOX keeps on doing worse and worse each year with its shows that were ‘ONCE hit wonders’. Napoleon Dynamite has given new life to their ‘Animation Domination Sunday’, so theres that! With ‘The Flintstones’ reboot in the works maybe The Simpson’s curtain can finally close for good – that show needs to go!
ABC, is doing great this year! It gave Happy Endings new life, and showed that something that starts out mediocre still can turn it around. I hate how they treated cougar town this year but those feelings I harbour are due it being one of the best comedies on TV (most contenders on my list of comedies are part of ABC’s schedule). Once Upon a Time is a breath of fresh air on the fantasy/supernatural front. Not since charmed have I enjoyed this kind of show so much; the vampire diaries has evolved into a genre of its own with all the vampire stuff around right now, so that doesn’t count, haha, but even taking into account Supernatural and The Secret Circle (speaking as a huge fan of both), I’ve always felt there was something missing in them. Once Upon a Time hit a bulls eye. ABC is doing quite well on the drama side this year. They are letting DH go (could Grey’s Anatomy? be next [INSERT HOPE HERE]) and they are taking chances with their schedule, they have been doing so for a while but I think things are finally working out.
CBS is obviously rocking it with its comedies, and yes I am watching all of them; even Rob! which is growing on me FAST. I’m not a fan of the procedural – they just do nothing for me – but if i did I think I’d watch the ones on CBS: Hawaii Five-O, The Mentalist, The Good Wife, NCIS, Criminal minds.. you get the point. CBS is not one for a serial drama. The big-heads at the eye know that their audience switches over to them for their exceptional comedies and intense dramas. Sure every year they have the most epic of fails with a hand full of shows, but the ones they do get right do pretty darn well.
As for NBC. I finally have a show on there since season 1 of heros, that I long for; three actually! Chelsea, Handler and The Firm. Fingers crossed that Smash follows suit. People may not be responding as I’d like when it counts the most but I figure american audiences are very sceptical that the peacock can turn things around. I believe a lot more people should give those three shows a bit of a chance to see how hilarious their sitcoms can be and how well written The Firm is. They have taken whitney and Chelsea back to when they ruled the week with Friends and Will and Grace.
The way I see it, I hope each network actually learns something this year with their respective successes and losses.
- The CW with the adaptations; they seem to be catching on
- ABC’s comedic growth should be expanded further but a bit more Desperate houswive-ish with the female centric-y lead/s shows are what define the network as i see it. could GCB new DH; who knows?)
- Fox’s animated experiments seem to have finally paid of, and im happy for that but please; no more animates shows that dont last more than 13 episodes until The Flintstones. These shows may not cost much to produce but Fox needs to take a hint and focus more on the drama comedies. A bit more promotional content and buzz around their programming.
- CBS is the best network on TV. I dont care what anyone say. Their week is stella and even though I only watch their comedies I know their dramas are stellar (theyr’e the only network sweeping through award season to be fair)
- NBC, thank you for Whitney, Chelsea and The Firm. I will be sad to seeing 1 (or quite possibly all) of these shows go since it seems every one has lost faith in you. To be fair though, after the last couple of years and that Heros incident; i dont blame them
Thanks
I read Vegas Baby this weekend from Film 44. It’s excellent and it’s at NBC. Any word on that? I hope NBC isn’t punishing them.
Love Vegas Baby. If not NBC it could be ABC. Sexy fun.
Is Peter Berg the writer behind Vegas Baby, or is he just producing/directing?
Producing and maybe directing from what I heard. It’s about Vegas desperately trying to survive in the new economy. Mormons not mobsters are running the city. Grounded but escapist like Vegas.
Agree on VEGAS BABY. Could see that world in a new way. Distinctive.
Snuck a copy of Vegas Baby and read tonight. Absolutely excellent. Exactly what NBC should be putting on their schedule. It’s a 2012 depiction of Vegas. Gritty but funny. A female take on Vegas which is something no one has ever seen.
Read it this morning. One of my 3 fave pilot scripts. What’s the status? Anyone? Anything?
New take on an old story. Impressive work. Peter Berg could direct the crap out of it. It’s from the point of view of a female character. Very cool.
No word on The Hollows project at the CW? It’s based on one of my fave urban fantasy series.
I would also love to hear an update on this project! I always thought The Hollows series by Kim Harrison would make an excellent tv show and was very excited to hear that the CW had ordered a pilot.
How does an unproduced pilot “track well”?
I’m guessing that means “lower executives like it but upper ones haven’t commented”.
Anyone know the real answer?
very, VERY good question!
CWDev, wich pilot is FACE VALUE?, I can’t find any info on it…
FACE VALUE is an ensemble set in a NYC Law Firm. The twist is the lead guy suffers from a disease that prevents him from being able to distinguish Faces, but makes him a brilliant investigator. Its a great script. Written by Peter Paige & Bradley Bredwig.
That sounds absolutely ridiculous.
From Peter Paige & Brad Bredeweg, the team that brought the CW that runaway hit Fly Girls?
No.
r0ckmypants, Bitter much? Can I ask what it is that you’ve done?
I haven’t done anything; I’m a consumer, and I’m sick of consuming CRAP.
You don’t need to be a chef to know when the food tastes like shit.
I have read all of their pilots. Not everything is announced, come on now.
I’d love to see either (or both) Bert Royal pilot picked up, particularly Dare.
Hope Fox picks up Silvio Horta’s family drama. I was a big Ugly Betty fan.
r0ckmypants, leave the bittnerness behind. I am assuming, like the rest of us, that you havent even read Face Value. So leave your immature comments off the site. I’m looking for real news and comments on what is good and what isn’t working. Who’s read the Silvio Horta, Green Arrow, etc?
Immature comments? I expressed my opinion, which is what the comment section is for, on a ridiculous concept for a pilot. I didn’t say anything out of line… in fact the only snide comment I made was on a show that has already aired and was universally reviled. Grow up.
Is it me or CULT is a pilot from a few seasons ago that didn’t get picked up? Sounds awfully familiar the story line and name.
CULT script was dreadful and completely wrong for the CW fan base. No way that makes it on the air, but with Josh Schwartz attached – they prob just want to be keep him happy.
I also found it familiar – was it a failed pilot from this past season?
Glad to see The CW realizing their line up needs ALOT of fresh blood. The Shonda Rhimes period hotel drama sounds a bit similar to Downton Abbey but that may be a good thing.
CBS needs to find their CSI replacements as that franchise is on fumes.
They seem to be sold on The Rifelman, we will see. ABC to me seems to be taking on all comers no really set “that is an ABC show” mentality. Could be a double edged sword.
Fringe is gone and I can see Terra Nova getting a 13 episode or less order for next season.
House is done as well. Alcatraz I think was a great start and Touch promises to be great.
I swear, there is no way to judge the relative merits of a potential pilot by the log line description. Really. Auspices, THE SCRIPT, production values, scheduling and LUCK are the only things that matter. You think something sounds ridiculous? You are probably right. Now all you can do is be patient.
Cw should cancel their entire schedule. They get half the ratings of okay cable shows with better market penetration.
Why CBS and wb keep good shows off cw is a mystery.but not a single current show is a keeper
Retention is irrelevant in 2012. Happy endings is staying
CW needs a complete makeover TVD is its only decent show and it will be heading into its 4th season. TSC was not horrible but half the cast was miscast and they brought in Kevin Williamson too late to clean up the mess.Hart of Dixie is too much too loud and too bad. Nikita may be its only good adult show but its a disaster in the ratings. SPN needs to go. So yea The CW needs alot of remodeling.
So how many pilots on average do the networks greenlight to go to series???
