JJ Abrams is doing a lot of good to the Star Trek franchise. Until 2009, Star Trek was basically an American TV franchise with some low budget movies here and there. Now, thanks to the new movies, ST is really becoming known around the world and movie fans are finally taking it more seriously in the US. I hope Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica will find a way to do the same thing and move on from the small screen to the big screen.
Check the domestic/foreign breakdown. The last movie got a lower percentage of foreign revenue than jingoistic ole Captain America. Star Trek is still relatively unpopular with foreign audiences compared with the average popcorn movie based on American pop culture (comic books, toys, theme park rides etc).
Not sure why, but I suspect it might have to do with the complications of the backstory, which may intimidate audiences that have little exposure to it, regardless of how JJ Abrams tries to simplify things.
Battlestar Galactica (the old version) could do very well internationally. It’s basically a content-free shoot-em-up, doesn’t have to be any more complicated than Transformers.
My guess is that Doctor Who is too culturally specific to survive the blanding down process that is required in order to translate it into a global property, but I’m skeptical that anyone will ever seriously try.
The percentage breakdown of the last film was not far off the usual 60/40 split that the previous films enjoyed. Just with considerably higher grosses in this version.
It’s quite true that Star Trek has always been in cinema terms, much more an American film franchise than a truly global one, however the fact that it managed to go past $100 million foreign is a feat no other Trek film managed.
But it might serve as the basis to then grow from there.
Your wrong on BSG it had a complex back story
Agreed on “Doctor Who” being too culturally specific. The dismal ratings of the 1996 movie on Fox, as well as its bad reviews, would seem to indicate its problems just translating to another Western, English-speaking country still often referred to as a “former colony” by the British.
I hope they never put Doctor Who on the big screen I don’t think it’s transferrable like Star Trek and would ruin it!
Obviously your not a Star Trek fan to say the least….I never respond on these sites but your comment was sooooo based on your obvious LACK of knowledge of the prior Star Trek Movies I just had to set you straight. First off there were a few Star Trek movies that may not have been HUGE success’ but there were some that had very large budgets(Star Trek the Motion Picture, Star Trek’s First Contact and Generations) and they did very well at the box office. Those movies I mentioned also had a very large audience of NON-trekkies as well. I understand your point that J.J. Made his ST more Mainstream and with all non-tv actors which was a first for any Trek movie…..bye
very good….you ae a fan.as am I,,,,,,I suport you 100%
Star Trek the motion sickness picture did not do well. WTF are you talking about. It had a big budget but lost like 18 mil. LOL. Wrath of khan had a sucky budget but made like 42 mil. and the ST 4 did well. All the even films did well. All the odd ones were crap. It looks like based on this feed they are breaking with tradition and now all the even movies will be crap. LOL.
HHHHHHmmmmmmmm The comment above is completely WRONG!!! lets get it straight.. Star Trek (Kirk and Spock) played for 3 years and made a HUGE impact worldwide. This is why there where sooooooo many paradys done of it in Soooo many countries … Even before the first (Low Budget movie came out) also a huge mistake on the poster part…. Star trek the motion picture was the hughest bugeted movie made at the time ,50 Million dollars . no other film at that point in time had cost so much.. Thats not low budget my friend… Maybe the special effects where not up to par with todays fx’s , Ill give you that…
But to say That Star trek had no popularity outside USA is a massive No No .. Do Not insult Star trek fans …
Have to agree. Although I think the guy was trying to give props to the Abrams’s movie (which is fantastic) he is obviously wome new journalists with limited understanding of the franchise. It is likely he was simpley given an assignement to write something about the upcoming ST, but had little clue of the history, it’s kine of the way this new generation does thing, they only live in the now and don’t understand the history because it takes to much work to understand it, it’s why they end up getting these types of responses.
Bottom line is the new ST (Abrams) and global communication allows it to be far more mainstream and with much greater exposure. ST TOS (that is “The Original Series for the noobs) created a cult follwing, and TNG spawned a new generation of Trekkies, much like Abrams movies will. TOS even spawned a cartoon let alone movies in the 80s.
yes 50 mil in 77/78 was a lot of money but not too many people realize some of that 50 mil was eaten up by the failed start trek 2 second 5 year mission for tv. also Gene R directed some of the movie at the start until the studio brought in someone else which then they had to redo most of the movie. it was a painful 2 years to get this movie to finish. it did a reported 80+ mil which back then wasn’t too shabby. my biggest problem with JJ trek is he pretty much made everyone the same age +/- 5 yr which is not even close other than spock, scott, and mccoy. anyway i love trek and will always keep an open mind for the next one.
Actually, I’ve heard more die-hard Trekkies say bad things about the 2009 movie than good. I haven’t seen it, but I have seen previews-and the one with Spock losing his temper? That doesn’t reflect any Vulcans that I have ever seen, on or off the big screen. So if the new movies keep chopping up the things that I KNOW….not many people will be watching it.
And Star Trek has had several popular movies-my personal favorite being the TOS movie The Voyage Home.
More Trekkies DIDN”T like it? My A$$. I’ve been a fan since I was old enough to understand it, and I couldn’t have like the movie more if it was set post-dominion war. Also, pretty much everyone I’ve known feels the same way; even the old-school fans that didn’t get into TNG, DS9, and Voyager (lets not go any further than that
.) I’m not sure where they are gonna go with this plot-wise, but JJ did a badass job last time, and I’m trusting him not to screw this one up.
That said, the international acclaim that these Hollywood beasts are gaining now MAY give us just the push we need to see some Timelord action on the Silver Screen. Niel Gaiman? Anyone? Perhaps a writing team up with T. Pratchett? GIMME SOME!
in a way you are right. i think this movie was more catered for the non trekkies and i think it worked. you didn’t need to know anything about trek so thats why it might have worked better for non trekkies.
I so don’t agree with you. I think the film in 2009 was brilliant! These characters are timeless and Bones and Scotty were perfect. I originally had a hard time with Spock, but after seeing this film several times now, I fell for him. Do your homework; there were several shows in the original series, where Spock DOES, in fact, lose his temper. One must remember that he IS half human and has less control over his emotions, than most Vulcans.
And Chris Pine for Kirk?? LOVE it….move over William Shatner!!
Die Hard Trekkie,
M.
Please tell me JJ Abrams is not directing this one! He totally ruined the first time around with his stupid lighting show which took away from the film. It was so distracting. Even more so on DVD/Blu-ray. Let someone else take the Helm this time! Please!
Engage!
“Make it so” JJ !!!!!
lol. Kirk never said “Make it so”. Captain Picard did. But I’m with ya on that!
Its about time. With the success of the first one, I don’t understand why they waited so long. At the rate they’re going, the new cast will soon be too old to play the parts.
Looking forwarbd to seeing where they go next…
OVERKILL. all or most of the previous movies had to contend with the shows that were on tv which might be part of the reason the movies didn’t do that well. not going to mention the bad story line for 9 and 10. IMO
Beam me up, J.J.! Beyond excited for a second serving of the new Star Trek and I really hope this marks the return of Khan. What a great opportunity to explore one of the greatest Trek villains. Also, will William Shatner finally enjoy a meaningful return as the elder Captain Kirk? I see no reason this talented group of writers couldn’t find a way to showcase Shatner in a flashforward scene or two, especially given the fact that this new incarnation of Star Trek exists is an alternate timeline from that of the original series and films. Shatn
It won’t be Khan. It’ll be Klingons. That’s why they cast the weird-looking Cumberbatch in the role. He’s got the bone structure to make a good turtlehead.
Not a huge Star Trek fan (okay, I watched all the time when younger) but loved the last Star Trek. The casting was great and very funny at times. Looking forward to this one.
Shatner and Nimoy should be reunited as their famous Trek characters one last time. It is just too monumental of a moment to pass up in my opinion given the amazing talents behind the camera on this unusually strong reboot.
HOW RIGHT YOU ARE SEAN!!!
For crap’s sake – no cameos from the geriatric leftover original crew! That’s OVER and done!!
Apart from that – looking forward to May 2013.
obviously you have no respect for the original(and the best)cast of the massive following that is Star Trek.Yes, they are getting older but that doesn’t take away from the greatness of the roles they played. They are legends and have earned the right to play a cameo in a film based on a following they helped create. Truth be told I don’t think the whole Star Trek ordeal would have been as sucessful without Nemoy or the “Shat”.
If Shatner wants to be involved (or indeed, any of the old cast members), I don’t see why they can’t play ambassadors or Federation members or aliens. I’d love to see Shatner as a grizzled, fat old Klingon, though I doubt his ego would allow it.
Please oh please let Shatner be a Klingon!
come on are you kidding? the klingons probably already have statues in Kirks name not to mention a few opera’s. who else can make the claim of going up against Kor, Kang, & Koloth and live to tell about it many years later?
How about creating something new instead of constantly microwaving the same, old food?
JJ Abrams should have done an advance Star TRek NOT Recreate the Original, thats an insult to the origianl cast. it shows Abrams and his producers can not come up with any new approches. No Imagination. It should have taken place in the 25th centry new ships, new uniforms, ect. It appears Abrams and his producers would not know what to do with an orginal Idea if their lives dependent on it. There in it just form the money and they have NO shame!!!!!!!!!!
there is so many great novels to chose from that no movies have ever been made from in the star trek world.why not something never seen before.that way we would not be comparing the old with the new movies
Why exactly does it take so long between “Star Trek” films? In some ways-the delay may hurt a franchise.Granted,Star Trek has a strong & loyal fanbase, but still… Reminds me a little of the James Bond situation & Daniel Craig-how can they hope to break the record of most Bond portrayals with Mr Craig when it takes so long to just complete one film. Ain’t happening-unless Craig will play the part using a walker. P.S. As a fan,I understand some fans may not want Shatner in the movie, for whatever reasons-but,they must find a way to get him in this movie somehow!! This is the man who began one of the most endearing & enduring chapters in the history of sci-fi as Captain James T. Kirk. Let’s give him his due. As a “Star Trek” fan myself, it is my opinion that Mr Shatner deserves an appearance on this film based on his legacy alone!! Thank you.
Economics is one reason it takes so long between films. Those effects come especially dear (plus add the, IMO ANNOYING, 3D science). Another is release priority. There is stiff competition among the motion picture companies to secure their blockbusters a coveted summer spot. As for returing the original ST cast to at least some cameo roles. NOOOOO. Spock worked in the ’09 as part of the whole timeline plot, but that’s where it needed to end.
Just having Nimoy in the latest film surprised and gave the film
the credence it needed. You could do wonders with cameo’s of the
old cast. J.J. is one of the most talented directors in hollywood.
He did wonders with the old S.T. movies, and I’m sure he’ll do the same with this one. Sulu, shields!
Loved the original series, loved the movies (even have a soft spot for the bad ones) and LOVED J.J.’s reboot! Cannot wait for this sequel
and i would be beyond thrilled, as would be most fans, if they found a place for the brilliant Mr. Shatner!!!
Please, for the love of Christ . . . no lens flares this time . . .
“Economics is one reason it takes so long between films. Those effects come especially dear…”
Well, there you go. Lens flares are pretty cheap compared to, oh, state-of-the-art stop-action animation! ;o)
I loved JJ’s rebooted STAR TREK, found it exciting and emotionally satisfying. But, if I may nerd out for a minute, my one major complaint is that it didn’t have an ever-so-slightly intellectual idea/issue at its center as many outings of the franchise have. As ham-fisted as STAR TREK can be when it gets philosophical, it’s a major part of why the franchise has such longevity. Beyond the green-skinned beauties and phaser blasts, you could always count on a little food for thought. To be fair, the reboot had to do a lot of heavy-lifting to introduce Kirk, Spock, and Co. to a new generation of fans. Now that’s done, so I hope the new movie can find the screen time to aim a little higher.
Will Ben Burtt be doing the sound? That was among my favorite things about the ’09 film.
NO LENS FLAIRS PLEASE! Other than that I LOVED the reboot, my friends thought there was a problem with the projection system, very embarrassing but I really liked it and am looking forward to this.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Kirk die in Picards arms at the end of Generations? This would make it difficult for his “return” in this one. Looking forward to this one, the first one was excellent!
Alternate time stream changes the future. They can do anything they want with the stories to come.
Please, no Khan repeats! Would you do Gone with the Wind today. Some classics are best left alone. We know how it would end anyway, right?
How about Gary Mitchell’s death, or a Harry Mudd meeting?
The Gary Mitchel event happened during the movie when the Captain of the Enterprise stranded his friend on Delta Vega.
The next event in the time stream might be young Captain Kirk saying “Showered with their clothes on?!!” Whispering “Beam the landing party … into a quarenteen area. I don’t want something that … crazy, spreading on my ship.”
Lens flares are cool.
Kirks upbringing in the new time line was so different that i guess he and gary never met. would explain why there was no mention of him. either that or i fell asleep during that moment or someone didn’t do that much research.
Folks, the alternate timeline introduced by JJ allows them to do anything they want with the entire history of the Federation. JJ wasn’t a Trek fan and didn’t want to direct a Trek movie if he had to stay true to canon. That means in this new universe Gary Mitchell might never even have been born, or that Pike and Kirk, who had never served together on the Enterprise before, were suddenly shipmates, or even that Vulcan no longer exists. The only thing that would make me happy about the next movie is if they pulled one of those “hey, this timeline’s all wrong, we’re headed down the wrong path and we have to fix it! and then go back to the way it was supposed to be – i.e. starships built in space not Iowa, a money-less society in which brands like Nokia and Budweiser (or Slusho, for that matter) don’t exist, and thought-provoking philosophical questions that make us think about our lives and existence. But money talks, and apparantly it’s saying that the movie-going audience is basically too stupid to react positively to anthing but breakneck action and explosions.
I loved the new reboot and can’t wait for the next movie. There is only one problem that I saw.. the whole thing with Uhura running around after Spock with the “kiss me, kiss me, hold me, listen to me, etc” behavior just drove me nuts. Uhura was a strong, intelligent, woman… did they miss that in the original series..she was never a pathetic Barbie girl and that is how they portrayed her in the movie.. and Spock allowing her to interfere in his duties??? At one point when he was rushing off to try to save Vulcan, he told her to get on the radio and call for evacuations and instead she followed him demanding to know what he was going to do and why. JEEZZZZ could we have a lot less, in fact none of that in the next movie?>??
Obviously, you do not remember the hitory behind the kiss in the OST. It was the first time a white man kissed a black woman on TV. Very, very monumental for tv. Roles were reverse in the new ST where a Vulcan kisses a black woman. First time for that too perhaps? =)
Yes, please no Uhura chasing spock. stupid and weak..
Abbrams definently hit a home run with the new “Trek”! The old movies just did not live up to the strength of Star Trek in my opinion, Bad special effects and sometimes corney scripts just didn’t get the job done! Too bad we have to wait 15 months for the new one I’m outa’ Beam me up Scotty!!!
I loved the way J.J. Abrams made the 2009 movie, but he messed up the Star Trek Original Series storyline badly. I only hope that he does a better job on this next one. I am planning on seeing it. Not trying to say that J.J. Abrams is a horrible director, he’s awesome!!
“I loved the way J.J. Abrams made the 2009 movie, but he messed up the Star Trek Original Series storyline badly.”
Yeah, alternate realities do tend toward having that effect.
I was impressed with the ST reboot. Although, I will admit I am prejudice in that I am a Star Trek fan, (all the movies and most of the series). I personally would love to see JJ explore th Mirror Universe. This would be a great follow up to his reboot of ST alternate timeline, and the Teran Empire with Emperor Tiberius Kirk. This story line has been visited many times through out the entire ST universe of series, and novel, even some written by William Shatner, which would also allow a cameo of Shatner playing the role of the evil Emperor Kirk.
@ Carl, yes they are in it for the money, why go out on the limb on a new story line, with new characters? 300+ million dollars reason why! Read a book instead, I do you get more in depth story than a movie.
