Bob Anderson, a British Olympic fencer who fought as Darth Vader in two Star Wars movies as part of a long career as a movie sword master and fight director, died January 1 in England. He was 89. The British Academy of Fencing said Anderson first worked in movies staging fights for the 1952 Errol Flynn pic The Master Of Ballantrae. He went on to choreograph scenes in such high-profile films as the James Bond movies From Russia With Love and Die Another Die, The Legend Of Zorro, the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and those great showdowns in The Princess Bride. He was outed by Mark Hamill in the early 1980s as the man who performed the key Darth Vader light saber scenes in The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi — not actor David Prouse, who at 6-foot-6 was far taller than Anderson, who was around 60 years old at the time.

Bob was an amazing guy, and had the best job in the world. He was a master swordsman and choreographer, and Hollywood legend. He will be missed.
Although I have seen the film dozens of times —– missed the sword fight in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, apparently.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ramirez! Bob doubled Sean Connery for those awesome sequences in the original HIGHLANDER in 1985. The man was a legend.
Mirroring the other comments – Bob was a gentleman and quite a guy. Not to mention, a great swordsman. Say hi to Mr. Flynn and Mr. Rathbone in your next journey, Bob.
Bob is one-of-a-kind. We’ll not see his like again. He was a Royal marine that, as he told the story, had two ships shot out from underneath him. He married once and stayed married. He was a devoted father who loved his children more than himself. Whoever knew him was better for it. He was my friend and, even at 89, died too young.
Great words, Mr. Brown…
He will be greatly missed. His ability was more than just “good for the camera” it was truly artistic what he did. Some of our favorite films would never had been the same without him.
