‘The Office’ Spinoff Starring Rainn Wilson In The Works For Midseason 2013 Launch
While attending the SAG Awards today, The Office co-star Rainn Wilson confirmed my story that he is to star and produce in a spinoff series, which in the works for midseason 2013. After quipping that spinoffs never work and that a series “with a character a annoying as Dwight” is “the worst idea I have ever heard in my life,” Wilson told E!’s Giuliana Rancic during the network’s live red carpet coverage that, “We’re talking about a Dwight Schrute spinoff that could be really cool.” He didn’t go into details but said that the new show “would have a crazy menagerie of characters… It would be even more far out and weird than The Office.” According to my sources, the spinoff, which will be tested as an episode of The Office this season, will have Dwight (Wilson) living at the Schrute family beet farm and bed & breakfast, which have been featured on the show several times and will include multiple generations of the family, many cousins and neighbors. The project hails from Wilson and The Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein, with original Office executive producers Ben Silverman and Howard Klein also attached.

dwight hasn’t been funny since 2008. but go ahead, NBC, gamble millions of dollars on a character that practically no one cares about anymore. #2008goodtimes
Actually, THE OFFICE itself hasn’t been funny since 2008. The show has been stuck in neutral all year — Spader has been a dud, making Andy Bernard the manager was a bad decision, and the story lines have been treading water, rehashing old material. I mean, I love John Krasinski, but even Jim’s eye-rolls are tired.
The show should’ve ended with Steve Carell’s departure — right now it looks like it ought to come to an end asap.
I honestly don’t understand how NBC could think this will work creatively or get good ratings.
Maybe that’s why the stay mired in fourth place.
Rainn knows he is on minute 15
Greg Daniels script “Friday Night Dinner”
is embarrassing and to think they are keying him do an Office Spinoff is Startling and a horrible creative decision
Of course Rainn thinks it “could be really cool.” NBC would be paying him a ton of cash to do a show. That is cool to Rainn. Doesn’t matter that the idea is stupid… a bed & breakfast beet farm… Hey NBC execs. stop and read that sentence out loud to yourselves…
A show about life on a bed & breakfast beet farm.
Kill it now and save yourselves the time, money and energy…
Whatever you think of Ricky Gervais, at least he knew when to end his “Office”.
Will this be Newhart or Joey???? Ummm. I’m leaning hard in one direction
Ricky Gervais had it right when he ended the original British show after two series. There are actually inklings at this point that NBC will renew The Office for another season. Are they crazy? Must be if they’re considering a Dwight Schrute spin off.
Maybe they all know that The Office, while still funny, isnt what it once was. I think Rainn could Rain down on his critics and bring the funny, with some help from his Office mates, no? Allegedly, Mindy (Kelly) was promised a sitcom to write and direct, so maybe this is their way of letting her run one, and Dwight starring in one, so they kill two birds with one stone, lol!
To answer your question… “Rainn could Rain down on his critics and bring the funny, with some help from his Office mates, no?” No. He couldn’t and wouldn’t rain down any funny and his Office mates would be smart to stay away from this horrible idea.
And what’s wrong with tv today (besides reality shows) “Allegedly, Mindy (Kelly) was promised a sitcom to write and direct…” who thought that was a good idea? ugh, so depressing.
How about putting some love into The Office rather than continuing to phone it in while everyone’s creative energy drifts elsewhere? There is so much potential in that cast, and week after week they drop the ball. They have great set ups that usually end with trying to make Andy Bernard feel better instead of pushing the envelope and taking it over the top. An example would be the excellent garden party with a great group of guest stars, but over and over the moments of possible hilarity were stomped on. At least they could have let Josh Groban sing more since he was there anyway… And Spader can be awesome if given a chance. The extreme quirkiness and awkwardness of all the characters has diminished in favor of pleasantly getting along. That works for Parks, but not for the folks in the Office.
DO NOT WANT. Dwight works as a weirdo amongst various personalities. I would not tune in for 30 minutes of Schrute and his creepy McPoyle family.
Even though it’s down something like 17% in ratings from last year, “The Office” is still one of NBC’s top programs. NBC definitely doesn’t want to lose it. I have to believe that the creative minds of the show realize that NBC is settling for what it can get, and have no motivation to improve the quality of the writing. Shooting off in a new direction with the Dwight character could work and could create a spark amongst the writers and creative team. There would have to be some subtle changes to the character though. The same sort of thing which happened with the “Frasier” character after “Cheers” ended. I’m interested to see what they do with it.
The office rocks. Its a great show, Keep it going. Rainn is fun in any role, lets see what else there is. Don’t you want to see more Dwight. More Mose! But don’t cancel the office
