After five seasons, 91 episodes, dozens of “save the show” petitions and as many Subway plugs on the show, NBC’s quirky dramedy Chuck bowed out last night with two back-to-back episodes. Both hit season highs though neither cracked the 1.5 demo rating or 5 million viewer mark. The regular-slot 8 PM episode (1.2/4, 4.1 million total viewers) was up 9% from last week in 18-49 to post the show’s highest numbers this season. They were quickly topped for the Chuck series finale at 9 PM, which climbed to a 1.3/4 and 4.3 million viewers. While Chuck got an appropriate ending, its finale pre-empted rookie Grimm at a very unfortunate moment, just as the dark fairytale drama was starting a ratings momentum by reversing a slide with a big 29% ratings gain last week to a 1.8/5 in 18-49. With a weaker lead-in, NBC’s newsmagazine Dateline (1.1/3) was down 21% from last week.
With CBS’ lineup in repeats for a second consecutive week, ABC (1.6/5, 5.5 million) finished again as No.1 in 18-49, while CBS (1.1/4, 7.5 million) kept the total viewer crown. Univision (1.5/4, 3.6 million) was a major demo factor, finishing a very close No.2 for the night in 18-49. ABC’s Shark Tank (1.6/5) held up well in Week 2, down a tenth from its season premiere and dominating the 8 PM hour in 18-49. It finished a close second for the night in the demo behind its lead-out, Primetime: What Would You Do? (1.7/5), which was up a tenth from its season premiere last week. But 20/20 (1.5/4) was down 17% from last week’s special on the Italian cruise ship disaster. Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares (1.4/4) continues to struggle against unscripted rival Shark Tank, dropping another 13%. Fringe (1.2/3) was up a tenth from the series low it had been stuck at for the last couple of weeks.

The Show that Never Should.
While it is nice chuck fans got a final season and conclusion I am afraid it has ruined any opportunity in the next ten years of a deserving fan supported show to get a reprieve.
I don’t know a lot about networks and their decisions but as an avid TV viewer – why oh why does NBC keep doing this to my favorite show Grimm? They need to leave it on the air for crying out loud. it’s hard for fans to get invested in characters when the show only seems to be on 50% of the time.
I really think CHUCK, from a ratings standpoint, should have been over seasons ago. The “fans” didn’t even turn out for the series finale. Odd.
I understand a tenth isn’t that big of a big deal, but,as a huge “Fringe” fan- I’m glad it went up even just a tenth. Before these numbers,I can’t remember the last time it went up at all-so as a fan hoping for a fifth season-I’m grateful for the tenth. In my opinion, Fringe is a good program, although at times hard to follow, but, A LOT OF FUN! I think anyone who hasn’t sampled it yet, should give it a try,as,Fringe is not “just another sci-fi show”- Fringe actually has a heart & a lot of substance. Thank you.
Another season would be awesome!
Personally, I think Shark Tank has become very mean-spirited this season. I look at the five Shark’s and can only see the 1%. I especially felt bad for the last guy who only wanted to have his product made and sold in America – by American’s. All the Sharks could see was dollar signs – and not any Patriotism. Yes, I know, global economy – yada, yada, yada – but sometimes, you just gotta feel for the little guy.
It’s a BUSINESS show. Investing is about MAKING MONEY, and nothing else. If you think differently, you’re naive. They are only reflecting how it is in the real world. If that guy was a little more open, he would have had the money. He’s not a “little guy” in my mind; he was a terrible business man, actually.
fringe only went up even slightly because Grimm wasn’t on last night at 9.
Watched from day 1 and loved the Show. It was funny and entertaining.
Would watch Chuck any day over reality shows.
If NBC was not such a crap network people ratings would be top ten.
I agree Jennifer about Fringe and how it has heart as well as substance. I might add that it also has a style that helps make it all come together particularly well. But as far as it being hard to follow, I think that’s what helps make this show so great, because it doesn’t make the stories easily digestible for the common denominator. The audience has to pay attention or risk getting completely lost, which ironically is also the major reason the show is not more successful. I think people simply lack the patience for a show with many layers – unless it becomes a cultural touchstone a la Lost, where people feel the need to watch so they can talk about it with their friends. Fringe is pretty much the only show I’ll even bother to watch, because of the great storytelling and character arcs. So I can only hope for a fifth and final season, but unfortunately the ratings don’t make it seem likely.
Sean Hayes and Co…better get some balls and fight for their show. Greenblatt…thought he was a friend…cared more about the dying CHUCK than “GRIMM”???…He keeps killing the show. Time to tell NBC where to put it…how about another network?…Enough crap about being nice.
Never cared for Shark Tank or those fools that are the “sharks” on that program and hoping it tanks as the season progresses. As for Chuck, it’s about time that show finally has been cast off into the sunset and it was two years too many for the program. But Chuck fans at least had a nice series finale and conclusion to the show…us Las Vegas fans are just hoping one day we can get the conclusion we deserve on our show, even if it’s a two-hour movie.
I never understand wishing for a show to fail that you don’t watch. You’re really cool, Jed.
Well said. I can appreciate being a fan of a low rated show but ‘Chuck’ fans are far too small in number to give the show a fighting chance. If NBC weren’t used to having such poor numbers than a failing show like ‘Chuck’ would’ve been cancelled a while ago. NBC was foolish to bring it back because it was never going to be a hit much less going into season 5. I hope they learn from this and gut the other ‘it’s never going to be a hit’ shows like Parenthood, Harry’s Law, Are You There Chelsea?, etc
what and be like fox and kill another potential firefly? Chuck is a cult show and might not have been a perfect fit for NBC but it could have easily been on syfy between eureka and warehouse 13. Anyway you look at it, chuck is better than any reality tv, you would think people get enough reality in there own lives!
FringeFan, I wanted to say I agree with a lot of what you said. When I said “it’s hard to follow” I actually meant that as a compliment. I do acknowledge that Fringe requires people to use their minds-which is why I’m a big fan. However, you are right:maybe that is why it isn’t more successful. Fans need to really invest their time in Fringe & many people nowadays don’t wish to do that. I mean seriously: how else can you explain the success of so many reality shows? Personally,I have enjoyed this season so far,a season,by the way-which has raised even more questions. The writers have actually raised the ante & given us MORE to think about & I,for one, have had a lot to think about. Also,so many characters in so many universes has been absolutely fascinating to watch. Perhaps,if Fringe was less complex-it’d be more successful, but, as a big sci-fi fan-I WOULD NOT HAVE ACCEPTED SUCH A TRADEOFF! The reason I love this show is because it forces you to think & actually use some braincells.I fell in love with this show because of the relationships also-Olivia,Peter & Walter. I understand it was a part of the story, but, not having Peter there at the beginning of this season really hurt this show IMHO. Frngefan, I’m not exactly sure why some fans left this show in the past-I mean this show used to draw many more fans on Tuesday nights & remember they also moved it to Thursdays, but,oh well. I think moving a program so often doesn’t help, but,I’m grateful Fox has it on-even on Friday nights. One more thing: can you imagine anyone besides John Noble playing Peter’s father-it seems he was made to play this part. His is a performance with such nuance, which truly makes me appreciate what a fine actor, actually not actor, but, what a fine thespian this man is-Mr.Noble is truly a cut above so many of today’s actors. Anyway,Fringefan & fringe fans( & I know there are many of you out there) since a fifth season seems unlikely-enjoy the rest of the season,& also, one hell of a finale!Thank you
Realistically fringe… and I love the show… cant keep going like this. But please Fox and Warner work it out for one more half season to wrap it all up. Fridge will do well in syndication… Syfy?… And DVD sales will be much better if it has an ending.
I’m also a big fan of Fringe and I hope it gets a final season to wrap it all up.
I hope the blatant product placement helps it out financially. I usually can’t stand it but for this show I wouldn’t mind seeing them stop in the middle of a scene for a demonstration of the wonders of Lemon Pledge.
Maybe Walter could start enjoying Burger King milkshakes.
If that’s what it takes to get us another season, I say go for it.
Its to bad chuck is gone, it’s was a ridiculous fun show, hot woman kicked butt, tough guys, and nerds. It lasted 5 seasons because it had a loyal following. Sorry to see t go, and yes fringe is really good too, a modern X files
