ABC dominated primetime on the last night of 2011 with a New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 40th anniversary special and the 40th Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, co-hosted once again by Ryan Seacrest. The two combined to deliver ABC’s biggest New Year’s primetime numbers (9.8 million viewers, 3.0/11 in adults 18-49) in 11 years and topped the other broadcast networks combined in every half-hour. The anniversary special boosted the primetime portion of Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve (12.9 million, 4.1/15) to its largest audience ever on ABC, where it has been airing since 2000. The show was up from last year by 46% in 18-49 and 3.7 million viewers and dwarfed its original broadcast competition from 10-11 PM, NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly (3 million, 0.9/3).

Must be old people
I watched Anderson and Kathy.. lol
Can you not read?
Or are you just slow?
Read the 18-49 numbers below

Wait.. Are you asserting that people in their 40′s are not old?
Well, Sparky, we’ll see how you feel when you get to be that age. You’ll be amazed at how fast time goes by. You’ll be there before you know what hit you.
Oh dear Lord, won’t Dick Clark let it go and retire. He’s creepy, old and gross to watch now. That whole stroke thing is not a sexy look – take note, people. On the other hand, Ryan Seacrest is young and healthy and yet is only slightly less revolting to watch than The World’s Oldest Teenager.
Are you forgetting that it’s Seacrest that inflicts the Kardashians on the world?
gives new meaning to “the stroke of midnight”.
Dick is not nearly as painful to watch as Michael J Fox. Given that he almost died and his age, I would say his recovery and presence on the annual show are nothing short of a miracle. Given that this year marked his 40th Anniversary, I was almost expecting him to retire at the end of the broadcast. Would have made sense. Pass the torch to Ryan.
Michael’s recent stints on “The Good Wife” have been sad. I am very sorry that he has been afflicted with such a horrible disease and I hope that one day through research and the funds he has been able to raise through his foundation that a cure is found.
Given his deterioration, his presence on screen is very distracting and takes away from the pacing of the show and the story being told. Like any other career, when you are no longer able to successfully execute the tasks that are required as part of your job you must walk away.
Michael should concentrate on the amazing work of his foundation and know when to take his curtain call.
Hey Dick Clark is an institution! It’s his baby, let him enjoy it as long as he wants to.
No, he’s not.
Let’s dig up Alan Freed, please… the man Dick Clark unfairly took down in the payola scandal.

What will people say about you when you are old and possibly have a stoke. Wiil you defy all mankind and not age. Will people look at you the way you look at Dick Clark?
Dick Clark’s Ghoulish New Year is the greatest moment in television. We turn in to see what Rick Baker and Survival Research Labs have done to Dick to make him seem more life-like. Is there anything more creepy than how Dick insists on counting down the ball? It’s must watch trainwreck TV.
What’s funny is that Dick Clark of 2000 wouldn’t have allowed Dick Clark of 2012 to do any of this. He would tell stroke Clark that if he wants, he can show up in the crowd and wave to the audience – but no audio cause that’s depressing. However this is the only thing keeping Dick Clark alive. He’s seen how when people like himself retire, they just die – like Andy Rooney and the Peanuts guy.
No matter how bad Dick is, he’s better than watching tweaked out Carson Daly.
all I know is whoever did Dick Clark’s makeup- made him look like he was dying on air. Awful– awful job on his makeup.
It’s aired on ABC since the 70s. They took a break for NYE 99 when ABC did that all day long coverage of New Year’s heading into 2000.
The Lady GAGA performance was AMAZING…great way to bring in 2012
I guess it would be surprising if many viewers under 25 even know Dick Clark and his contribution to the American music scene. So why would the network think he would be a draw for this demographic? And as annoying as Seacrest is – and make no mistake, he IS annoying – he at least has the Idol connection to younger viewers.
Dick, no one disputes your legendary status and what you did to bring music and performers to American living rooms in the 1960s. But, my friend, it is time to hang up the tux and let NYE go. Your stroke was a tragedy and you deserve better than to be trotted out once a year by ABC. Take the money from licensing your name and retire in peace.
I love Jenny McCarthy on the show…she funny and always charming!
man, some of you are harsh towards Clark. I actually agree it’s not appropriate at this time to have him do so much on the telecast, but there’s a tactful way to say that. I also think there’s a respectful way to include him without it feeling patronizing and exploitive. Give him a great suite to watch it in, hook him up with tons of perks that night, and cut to him *once* to wave or say happy new years. But making light of his stroke or looks at this point is extremely superficial and cruel– you may want to hope none of you ever have to live that out yourselves one day.
