EXCLUSIVE: Selena Gomez and her production company July Moon has optioned the Jandy Nelson novel The Sky Is Everywhere. Gomez will develop the book as a star vehicle for the screen. She will play 17-year old Lennie Walker, a bookworm and band geek who plays clarinet and lives in the shadow of her extroverted older sister, Bailey. When Bailey dies suddenly, her younger sibling is left to take center stage and balance not one boy but two. One is his sister’s grieving boyfriend, the other a musically inclined transplant from Paris. Her whole world threatens to collapse all over again as she tries to juggle both guys.
The Wizards of Waverly Place star most recently starred in the 2011 coming of age film Monte Carlo. She’s repped by CAA and LH7 Management.

A 17-year-old has a production company? What the fuck have I done wrong?
Well first off, she’s 19 years old not 17. And if you have a successful Disney TV show and a tween following you could have your own production company at 11 if you wanted. And plus its a tax write off!
One of the most beautiful and honest books I’ve read. Hope she’s got the chops to pull it off.
is the book really that good? I was skeptical of the plot. Is it a really emotional book?
No, it’s not that emotional. It’s more like “my sister just died, I’m gonna make out with this boys to fill the hole in my heart” blah blah blah.
Yes, it is absolutely my favorite book. The summary (and i’m guessing the movie) does not do it justice. i have no idea if Selena has the talent to portray Lennie, i’ve only seen her do Disney which she is good in but does not have much depth. The book is excellent and beautiful, i suggest trying it.
The plot of this book seems like any other teen novel. The reason you should read it, however, is the writing. The language in this book is BEAUTIFUL. I applaud Jandy Nelson’s style; it makes this first-love story exceptional and beautifully detailed. That being said, I don’t think any movie can do this book justice just because it is very difficult to portray one of the book’s strongest points in a film. In addition, I would hate for this movie to flop and starring Selena Gomez, well, I don’t really think this film has a chance. Please let this book just stay the beautiful story that it is. Don’t touch it, Selena, just because you read it and liked it. That would be selfish.
Sounds awful, and add to that a Disney-bot, and you have the recipe for something truly terrible.
This sounds horrible. Seriously? Your sister dies and the biggest problem you have is playing two guys?
You can’t judge it until you’ve read the book. This summary doesn’t do it justice, I’ve read it ten times and take it with me everywhere. It changed my life.
the summary up there makes it sound like a terrible book , but its a really excellent book , and Jandy Nelson is a really talented writer , so you shouldn’t really judge unless you’ve read it .
Why is it that there are people that will jump to a conclusion without knowing all the facts? It’s like when you walk into the middle of a movie and assume you can tell what has already taken place before you saw it from the start. Jumping to conclusions can get you hurt especially if it’s a fight.
You go girl ! Selena G. deserves every success she has EARNED.
NOOOOO!!!!! SELENA GOMEZ CANT PULL OFF LENNIE!!!! SHE JUST CANT BE LENNIE!!! SELENA IS SOOOOO WRONG FOR THAT PART!
What happened to her starring in “Thirteen Reasons Why?”
She will star on Thirteen reasons why.
After when she finished filming Spring Breakers, and she is currently filming The Getaway.
Then she will hopefully start filming thirteen reasons why and then film Hot Mess And then The sky Is Everywhere.
This “production” company has been around since 2008 without producing anything. So don’t hold your breath.
I’m so excited!!! I just finished the book two days ago and today I found out they may be producing a movie I hope she does it!!
Yeh i know and i think she still is
So her biggest problem is the two guys not the death of her sister? This sound so unrealistic.
The summary does not do the book justice at all. In the BOOK her grief at losing her sister will tear your heart out. Seriously. It is soooooo good. I can not say enough how amazing this book is.
Why don’t you try reading the book?
Why the fuck did they have to cast HER as Lennie, Lennie deserves someone much better than Selena Gomez. Seriously, this book is one of my favorites, and now they destroy it by casting Selena….
Ugh why? Don’t even think i’ll watch the movie.
Idgi i was so excited when i heard they were going to make a movie, and then this.
Nothing personal against Selena, I just feel that Lennie isn’t Selena at all.
Lennie is a great character, but Selena won’t be able to portray her the right way.
I’ve never seen a Selena Gomez movie and/or television show so I honestly cannot comment on her acting chops, her production company, or anything having to do with. I have read “The Sky is Everywhere”, however, and I have to say that it IS my favorite book. It’s a beautiful story and while I’m not entirely sure they can capture the beauty and raw emotion of the book onscreen, the author (Jandy Nelson) is a true talent and I love her work and this story. It really disappoints me that people who think it’s sounds “awful” or “unrealistic” without having read the book are commenting with nothing but their ignorance to propel them. Do yourselves a favor, read the book and picture your own vision of Lennie. It is just amazing. Nelson tells us a story about first love WHILE AT THE SAME TIME painting a (yes, realistic) picture of grief and loss. It is believable. It’s phenomenal. Period.
The best book I’ve ever read, changed my life and the way I think forever. I can’t wait for the film, although I’m worried about one of the most noticed girls in the world trying to play Lennie, who hides in a shell for seventeen years? Still, sure it will be amazing.
Way to think outside the box. She has the potential to break out of the disney image and she chooses this? Gurl, time for you to do an indie.
She’s already doing an indie, and this book is way better than the description above.. she’s not as geeky/conservative as they make it seem.
It’s a good book. Doesn’t matter what, when, why, how and who? play’s the most up-top story. It’s what the author replies in his story and what he wants to share instead of making it seem like he’s crazie. haha … deal with it. It’s not your story, its the authors.
I have read this book over 20 times now and refuse to leave the house without it. It inspired me in so many ways, and I have no doubt that the movie will be excellent. I plan to go into it with an open mind about Selena, she wasn’t my Lennie but she is a very talented girl and have no doubt she’ll be able to pull it off. I just hope they get Josh Hutcherson as Toby, I think he is too perfect! I’m so excited to see who Joe is, and Sarah too. Oh my, too much excitement for this upcoming movie.
It is one of my favorite books, but sincerely I do not see anything to Selena as Lennie that horror!
There is no way in hell that Selena would be able to pull off Lennie nnonooo way! This is my favourite book and no offence to her but Selena is completely wrong for the part, really not how I imagined her at all
Selena Gomez CANNOT ACT!!! SHe will completely ruin what caould be a very good movie…
i saw this to be a movie once i was reading this book and i really loved this book
