Sherlock fans rejoice. A third series of the BBC’s hit modern take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s mysteries has been confirmed. The show, which airs on PBS in the U.S., stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes with Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. Although those involved have been cagey up to now about continuing, co-creator Steven Moffat tweeted on Sunday night: “Yes of course there’s going to be a third series — it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!” Moffat, who wrote Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures Of Tintin and exec produces Doctor Who, piped up with the news just as Series 2 ended in the U.K. to strong ratings. Production company Hartswood, which makes the show for the BBC, tells me a third series is in the early planning stages for 2013. A big question hovering over the continuation has been whether stars Cumberbatch and Freeman would be able to return. Freeman is playing Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies, but he recently said he would like to do more Sherlock. As for hot star Cumberbatch, his schedule has been growing increasingly packed. After turns in War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, he’s also in The Hobbit and recently signed on for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel. A UK rep for the actor tells me, “I’m sure he would love to do a 3rd series. It’s very unlikely they would have Sherlock without Sherlock.” Series 2 of Sherlock begins airing in the U.S. in May.

It a fantastic series, episode 3 which aired on Sunday night was one of the greatest pieces of television I’ve seen in a long time. Cumberbatch and the rest of the cast are at the top of their game.
Great news, my favorite thing on television in quite some time. I quite enjoy Downey and Law as Holmes and Watson, so imagine my surprise that Cumberbatch and Freeman have them soundly beat!
Also very much worth waiting for. three feature length episodes means the stars have time for other projects (these two have some big ones!) and are less likley to get burnt out. Not to mention some serious quality over quantity!
Stephen Thompson did a great job with the script of the third episode and the director Toby Haynes fitted in seamlessly with the work Paul McGuigan has done on the first two episodes. The weakest episode was the one written by Mark Gatiss.
Cumberbatch would make the perfect Doctor in a feature film version of Dr Who. I hope BBC worldwide push ahead with that in the next few years so when Cumberbatch has finished his stint on that he can play the Doctor.
Cumberbatch has stated many, many times he does not want to be the Doctor.
Actually Cumberbatch has said he doesnt want to play it on TV. Thats because the BBC tie you down all year so you have little time to do anything else. A feature film is a different matter. His parents were both in the old series of Dr Who so it is special to him. I think he’s very clever and is waiting for the bigger prize.
There won’t be a BBC Worldwide ‘Doctor Who’ movie without the involvement of Moffat. He’s said time and again since the “announcement” last fall that the prospects for a movie outside of the current TV show were greatly exaggerated. Unless he leaves the TV series at the end of the next run in 2013, there won’t be a movie.
The finale this past Sunday was brilliant. It’s a well written, acted and directed piece of work and the pair of actors have incredible chemistry that rivals past incarnations.
Hope it gets some recognition at the Emmys this year; it’s definitely sweeping the BAFTAs.
Also Tolkien fans worried about whether Freeman can pull off Bilbo Baggins should really watch the series; he is absolutely fantastic and I think he has aged sufficiently to shed his “Office” image.
Couldn’t agree with you more. The series is sharp, sexy, sassy, suave, saucy and beautifully stylised. I’m out of Sssss..
The chemistry between all concerned – especially the two leads – is electric. Wonderfully written, acted with deliberate expertise and precision, directed with cleverness and innovative inventiveness which keeps you pinned and edited with more than one sharp eye!
Make it and we will watch….
The renewal itself is a spoiler for people who hasn’t seen the final episode of season 2.
I thought that would be the case too – I heard the announcement about series 3 before I was able to watch – but in the end, it didn’t matter. Nothing could have prepared me for how it all went down. This is one of those rare instances where no spoiler can spoil it – it’s that good.
Not if you’ve read the books!
There cannot too much SHERLOCK, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. This is fantastic entertainment on all levels. For similar quality thrills of a different kind, I’d also recommend the UK series MISFITS. Catch it before the U.S. remake destroys it.
Cumberbatch is one of the greatest actors working in the industry today.Such a versatile actor. His comedy acting is just as good as his serious work. I particularly love his radio series Cabin Pressure. I’m glad to see such a fine actor get a huge fanbase. Tumblr is awash with his fans. Youngsters seem to have quite discerning taste these days. He’s a very powerful charismatic actor and I’d like to see him take on a big Marvel role.
You called us youngsters! I love it.
Yes we have gravitated toward Mr. Cumberbatch along with many other certifiably brilliant actors and well written television. Shows like Breaking Bad are our 90210 or Dawson’s Creek. The tide is turning for my some of my generation. We no longer crave popstars, instead seeking out real talent and great work. We also adore the writers! I absolutely love guys like Mark Gatiss, Stephen Moffat and Chris Chinball. The best episodes of Doctor Who ever!
We’re so excited for Sherlock’s series three to begin shooting in the new year.
ps. Please stay away from Tumblr. We’re pretty obsesses/crazy/fanatical over there. Don’t want to give anyone a fright.
Hopefully, Cumberbatch will become a huge star. He did a better version of Sherlock Holmes than Robert Downey Jr.
The actor in the porn parody of the first film did a better Sherlock Holmes than Downey.
When Season 2 going premire on PBS?
I haven’t seen season 2 yet in the US
Season 2 is scheduled to hit PBS in May, a ridiculous delay in the age of modern technology but oh well. I bought season one on DVD myself. Both actors are terrific and would be wise to balance a commercially and critically successful TV series with film work. Their success is well deserved!
Americans can watch Season 3 at their leisure with a minimum of web savvy — it’s streaming, it’s downloadable, all that. We’ve watched all three episodes in HD in the comfort of our living room already … and we’re in our 60s, hardly hackers.
The last Sherlock is the best movie of the year so far!
That’s Movie not TV Show!
I thought this was going to be on BBC America . I didn’t know it was on PBS -I’ve been waiting to see this .Why don’t they advertise anything ? They haven’t done much with Downton Abbey either, by mistake I saw it was on
I just bought Season 1 on iTunes because I was tired of waiting for it to appear on BBC America. I didn’t know they were airing on PBS either, else I would have kept an eye out for it!
Between the delays for Sherlock Holmes and Luther, BBC America is very nearly torturing my friends and I!
but we have to wait almost a year for next season? too long
great TV Series though
Benedict Cumberbatch is the best actor to play Sherlock Holmes since Jeremy Brett did it many, many years ago.
That “scanning” thing Cumberbatch does with his eyes when Sherlock is taking in data at the speed of sight is amazing. Try it yourself. I doubt you can do it.
Cumberbatch is now firmly in that situation faced by Basil Rathbone, George Reeves, Sean Connery, Daniel Radcliffe, et al.: how does an actor assure himself a varied career without being too closely associated with one phenomenal character? Never should have donned the stalker.
Mark Gattis would have made an excellent Holmes in a more traditional production. I wonder if he first conceived the series with himself in the lead. Granada should finish the canon with him on the role
