Another solid series premiere for a Showtime series. New dark comedy House Of Lies debuted last night with 1.03 million viewers at 10 PM. It was in line with the network’s most recent series premiere of drama Homeland, which opened with 1.08 million in October. However, Homeland had a bigger lead-in, and for the night over three plays House Of Lies amassed 1.38 million viewers, 13% higher than Homeland‘s opening-night viewership. (Showtime had a free weekend, but the ratings for its series include only subscribers.) With online and on-demand sampling, Showtime estimates that some 1.2 million sampled the pilot episode of House Of Lies. In terms of comedy series debuts, the show starring Don Cheadle landed between Showtime’s two most recent debuts: The Big C (1.15 million) and Episodes (768,000).
Leading into House Of Lies was the Season 2 debut of drama Shameless (1.58 million), which spiked 61% from its series premiere last January. For the night, the drama starring William H. Macy averaged 2.06 million viewers. At 10:30 PM, veteran Californication (758,000) was down 11% from last season’s opener, which followed Shameless’ series premiere.

Ten minutes of this show’s dialogue and I tuned out. I can’t believe Cheadle got involved in this. I’m sure the rating owes to his fans’ interest but I wonder how many will return for a second helping of this crap. I’ll wait for his next movie.
Ditto, Randi-I mentally tuned out, skimmed the rest of the ep, and it was AWFUL!
1 million viewers is a big deal? House of Lies was trash. total trash. Did not even have benefit of being funny.
Clearly you have no idea what your talking about.
Pretty sad reading skills.
The 1 million was for the east coast showing. It got more on the west coast.
It had 2.6 million viewers for the night. House of Lies premiere was higher rated than Homeland.
Was it that bad?
LOVE IT!!!!!!
The show was amazing. So funny, so fresh. Cheadle was hysterical and Kristen Bell was great. Glenn Turman was fantastic as the father and the boy who played Cheadle’s son was awesome. What a fresh, dynamic character. Wow. This is a winner!! Loved the two guys who worked with Cheadle on the team. The rest of the cast was stellar. Congrats to all involved.
I am not usually the person who does this, but this post just has the ring of publicist (I know its popular to call out a post as an inside job, but this just seems fake). “this is a winner!!’ “Congrats to all involved”…I smell a rat. And a bad show.
Tuned in for Cheadle and Bell, tuned out from sheer embarrassment for the both of them. I hope they were both paid upfront for this mess.
Didn’t watch, but agree on the numbers. 1Million is nothing. 2Million and people start to take notice. It’s scripted not reality. If it’s not a consistent 2, it’s getting pulled.
Also, don’t forget the lead-in factor of semi-popular return show.
Next two weeks determine this show’s fate.
Hope is does well as I generally like these actors and their other work, but statistics and history are stacked against it.
I liked it. Seedy, but that’s become Showtime’s middle name. Cheadle’s character was smart, tart & layered. Greg Germann was a hoot, as always. The plot was rather predictable but I enjoyed its execution. Here’s to a promising opening that leads to an unexpectedly interesting series.
This show felt like it was written by a bunch of giggling teenagers. Very confused as to why Cheadle would waste his comedic chops on such pedantic goofiness. And sorry, Showtime, the sex does not compensate for just plain bad dialogue.
And to whom was this imagined to appeal to …gays..lesbians.. children with sexual confusion ?
You are entitled to your own opinion but every person I know who watches this show LOVES it. You probably don’t get the humor and that’s fine. Have fun watching The Mentalist, or Dancing With the Stars.
You probably still watch American Idol.
