Simon Cowell’s SYCO ENTERTAINMENT has partnered with Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith’s OVERBROOK ENTERTAINMENT on the development and launch of a live, new international TV format to find the world’s greatest DJs.
This new format has already been developed and will be co-produced by SYCO and OVERBROOK. The show will capture the incredible rise of the DJ phenomena. It has been in development for over a year and SYCO, OE and Sony Pictures Television will soon announce their broadcast partners in both the US and the UK.
Simon Cowell said: “We have been working on this show for over a year and we wanted to partner with the right people. As soon as I met Jada and Miguel from Overbrook, I knew they would be our ideal partners. DJ’s are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show.”
“This show will comb the world to find a new breed of talent,” said Jada Pinkett-Smith, ” I am happy to be creating it alongside Simon Cowell, the Sony team, and my partner Miguel Melendez, on behalf of the Overbrook family.
“We are thrilled to be working with Simon Cowell and our partners at Overbrook on what we know will be a tremendously successful global format,” said Andrea Wong, President of International Production for Sony Pictures Television.

Now if Sony TV can just get that comedy competition show they have in development going they will have successfully stolen every format currently on air.
Nice job folks!
Can’t believe this! I have been waiting for a music reality show for AGES! Finally someone with an original idea!
And they expect who to watch this?
The DJ phenomenon? What DJ phenomenon? There are no segments of the TV audience looking for this to happen. It’s the single most ridiculous idea I’ve heard and it’ll fail.
Go out on the street and ask 100 people who Diplo is. None of them will know. None.
STOP IT. Just stop it. No more music reality series. Just …. stop.
Sorry but I don’t get it. I’m not saying that anybody can be a good DJ but this sounds like an off-shoot of promoting the notion that someone who slaps together synthesized, computer generated rythyms and calls it a song can then call themselves “musicians”. If people like listening to stuff like this, that’s fine. I am just concerned that eventually true musicianship-where someone puts in the time to master a real instrument, will become a lost art.
DJS? Who cares. This might be a good idea for YouTube, tho…that site is already filled with mashups.
Unless you live under a rock, (no upon intended) The folk instrument of the 21st century is the lap top. Furthermore, dance music the ONLY genre of music where the energy comes from the people themselves, so the DJ is the facilitator of that energy. Unlike a rock band or a singer, the DJ provides the platform for the audience to experience a COLLECTIVE dance force. It is in our genes to be tribal, it has been our past, and we are back now. It is the future.

I think it’s a genius idea. First of all,D.j’s exist in almost all part’s of the world. The idea will be welcomed on a large scale, especially the youth who’s population is more than 70% in the world today.
Secondly, every artist need’s a good D.j to get the a party started even before they get mic’! Were ever it’s happening be it the Clubs, house party, radio,Concert and even the white house presidential parties you need a “good d.j” to jump off a crowed of people. They fascinate us across the world with skill’s to mix already existing music using vines,c.d’s etc or creating a beat like from scratch like Dr. Drey,Timberland,Tiesto,David guetta and old school Run-D MC,Jazzy jeff n’ the Fresh prince just to mention a few.
We’ve been break dancing since back in the eighties in Africa,USA,Asia and other parts of the world cos of D.j’s moving our feet.
All am saying is,it’s bout time.
how very Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston of Will and Jada
Start looking for music clearance person right away. Well, at least they are not singing.
I am a DJ and this is a bunch of crap! I have been a nyc dj for over 20 years, played all over the states, and abroad What do Simon Cowell and The Smiths know about DJs? What do they know about ‘our’ scene? What was the last festival/rave/or real nightclub they’ve been to/do they know what real afterhours is? This shpuld be for CJs (computer jockeys) that are lame and pre program their sets before they even head out to play. BTW for those who don’t know, there had been a surge in DJing since mommy and daddy started buying every kid a laptop, and they illegally download the software that I could teach my grandmother to use and she’s been dead for over 20 years. Now of this is a show looking for scratch DJs (DJs that do tricks) then ok, but of as they say they’re looking for the next big international Dj, then this is crap as I said in the beginning. We can not showcase our talent in 3-5 mins playing the style of music that they think they know about. It’s an art form that just can not be properly demonstrated by playing a few mins. We take you on a journey, tell a story with the music, it’s a ride, and it takes years to master the art of reading the crowd and arranging the music. Listen I know I sound like a hater, lol – but it’s just corporate America trying to makeover money off of talentless people (ie: tom cruises son) – google it if you don’t know but his 16 y/o son is getting paid 10k-20k a night to Dj…not b/c he’s amazing and gifted but b/c he’s Tom effin cruises son. Another thing…real DJs who strive, dream, wok so hard, listen to thousands of songs to find the right ones for their set, and know what it’s like to work with vinyl records/CDs/computers or what ever they encounter when they walk into a Dj booth do NOT need Simon Cowell, the Smiths, or corporate america (Sony) to acknowledge ‘us’ and sat yes you are the best big thing. We do it ourselves and have the loyal fans around the world from the club world validate us as great DJs.
Although he is no longer with us, DJAM was the one who changed what a DJ has become. He catapaulted DJing into a new artistic career.
