EXCLUSIVE: Here’s another update on writer/director J.J. Abrams’ much anticipated Star Trek sequel — which is really No. 12 in the realm of Starfleet
movies – coming out on May 17, 2013 from Paramount. I’ve learned that hot British film actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in a lead role in the film. No word yet on whether he’ll be a hero or villain. But Cumberbatch landed some sought-after roles recently in War Horse (as ’Major Stewart’) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (‘Peter Guillam’). He will also portray ‘Smaug the Dragon’ through motion capture and voice the ‘Necromancer’ in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again. The 35-year-old London-born thesp is a veteran of both theatre and TV, most notably as ‘Sherlock Holmes’ in the 2010 modern BBC adaptation series Sherlock).
He also starred as ‘Stephen Hawking’ in 2004′s Hawking and received a nomination for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor and won the Golden Nymph for Television Films – Best Performance by an Actor. The British GQ magazine named him “Actor of the Year 2011″. Cumberbatch is repped by UTA and UK-based Conway van Gelder Grant LTD.
The Star Trek sequel is being co-written by Abrams with Lost’s Damon Lindelof, plus Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci. JJ is going to be making the movie in 3D. The first of Abram’s rebooted franchise opened May 8, 2009 for a $79M weekend and ultimate did $258M in North America and $130M international at the box office. The pic is being produced by all those writers and Bryan Burk, who is JJ’s Bad Robot production partner. It is anticipated that David Ellison’s Skydance will be co-financing the film with Paramount. All key cast members will be returning, like Chris Pine and Zach Quinto and Zoe Saldana.

Great actor. I love love love that show SHERLOCK. It is brillant and hugely entertaining. Almost impossible to take your eyes off the screen; Cumberbatch breaths fresh air into the role.
Peter Weller cast as mentor to the bad guy?
Ladies and gentlemen, we are looking at the Romulan commander in “Balance of Terror.”
That would make an awesome redu.
Everyone is thinking ‘Khan’ but what if this wonderful actor is playing Gary Mitchell? The reason I mention it is I read that the villain was definitely going to be on of the following five characters: Gary Mitchell, trelane
I doesn’t matter who the actors are. We hope this movie “corrects the timeline” that was destroyed by the JJ Abrams and crew.
The fact that it mattered to the producers, writers and directors who the actors are was what made the latest movie watchable, compared to a lot of previous efforts.
Besides, if you had to correct the timeline to match the original series, Kirk would have to wear an obvious toupee, Uhura should only say things that the computer tells her and we should get the body double for Karl Urban seated next to Chekov or Sulu on the bridge of the Enterprise but saying absolutely nothing.
No timelines were harmed in the making of JJTrek. Listen to what Uhura said again.
Cumberbatch is pretty solid. I like that they’re going for actors.
I’m dubious that he’s Khan though at this point. But I’m also curious (if he’s the villain) that we’ve gone from two latino actors (Del Toro and Edgar Ramirez) being looked at to a Caucasian Englishman. His casting doesn’t scream Khan at all. But we will surely find out soon enough.
I’m open to Khan but he wouldn’t be my preference.
Either way, Abrams and the team made a great film and I’ve followed Trek since I was a kid. There’s great potential with the new timeline they created and my only real hope is that they don’t squander it too much.
Star Trek 2009 was nowhere near a terrible film – watch it alonsgide something like G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra and you’ll realise what a truly terrible film REALLY is (plus I’ve seen them all, and several are a LOT worse and I’ve seen some truly terrible Trek along the way on TV as well) – so I’m definitely looking forward to this in 2013.
It coming back next season PBS Masterpiece Mystery BTW I think of this guy as younger Gary Seven that what I think
Maybe they combine the storyline maybe Khannn and Gary Seven HMMM
Since nobody has suggested he may be playing Lord Garth, and he looks exactly right for Lord Garth, allow me to be the first: he may be playing Lord Garth.
But he’s definitely playing a Klingon.
That is the best idea I have ever heard! Stranger in a Strange Land is my favorite book of all time, and I cannot think of another actor who could so beautifully play both the baffled man-child and the charismatic cult leader as Mr. Cumberbatch. We should start some kind of online petition.
I think they will use Cumberbash as the new “Q”. He even looks like one, to me.
“Tho there was no “Q” in the origional first series, this would give the whole thing a more updated slant. This “Q” would be more reclas whith his antics, causing all sorts of problems.
If I were making the next sequal, and I was going to bring in a “Q”, this is exactly the kind of person I would pick.
You can’t be more of a super villan then an un-experianced young “Q”!
